About
Da Nang's original food tour created by Shaun, a Da Nang expat since 2009. Shaun and his team lead small groups on walking tours to their favorite food spots around Da Nang, showing you a variety of venues and dishes you've never imagined. Outings are usually limited to 5 people to keep things relaxed and low-key. We have a morning and evening tour, and we love special requests!

We joined the morning food tour. Our guide speaks super good English and he told us many good stories. The food was excellent. I especially like the avocado smoothies and the egg coffee. I give it a 4 because I think the tour is a bit pricey for what we got. overall, it was a fun experience. Be sure to come hungry ( I mean really hungry)!!!

Hi, Thanks for coming on the tour! Glad to see you guys got to eat a lot, and try the avocado smoothie, one of my favorites :) It's true it's not the cheapest tour, but we feel the quality of the guide and the food makes it worth it (and so to lots of other people too!). We really appreciate the feedback! Shaun

Highlight of my Southeast Asia tour. Would be very surprised if you could find better or equal in Vietnam. Highly recommend... Details below. Shaun coordinated a bespoke tour of Da Nang, Hue and Hoi An that ticked all of the boxes, incorporated food tastings and was a lot of fun. Both Anh and Sally provided the tour. Sally was fun and knowledgeable and took me to so many places it was hard to keep track. You can tell she really loves her job. She was able to talk about the different foods being tasted and the places visited. Anh was almost native fluent in English and was able to discuss many aspects of Vietnamese culture and again took me to many very interesting places despite some bad weather. Was in very capable hands with Shaun, Anh and Sally.

Hi Steven, Thanks for coming on the whirlwind Central Vietnam tour. When you said you wanted to see Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue in 2 days, at first I thought it couldn't be done, but I'm glad you put us up to the challenge. I know Sally and Anh both really enjoyed hanging out with you and helping to put together something unique for your holiday. Thanks for the great review! Shaun

Had the tour with Anh and another couple. We had a lot of fun and for people who are not very social, we were lucky to be paired a couple who kept the conversation going (Anh, too). Food was good, we mainly liked the pre-dinner snacks. You are going to try stuff you would never try. BE ADVENTUROUS! Fun night out!

Honestly speaking, I was highly disappointed with the entire food tour organised by Da Nang Food Tour. The experience failed to meet my reasonable expectation. The reasons are as follow:-

1. The tour was definitely over-charged. I suspect that all the food that I ate did not even worth 10% of the entire tour which cost us two million vietnam dollars. I am not interested in how much profit margin could the organiser earn. As a consumer, I just want to get good food in a good price. For the price I paid, I would expect food with higher “class”.

2. When I made the reservation early in January, I was asked to state our preference of food. So I said that I expect our food tour to be one with a theme of seafood as Da Nang is a famous coastal city with fabulous seafood. That was, so to speak, one of the main reasons why I decided to pay a high price for the food tour because seafood ARE meant to be more costly. However, the organiser of Da Nang Food Tour failed to meet my expectation and purpose because they put us with other customers who may had different food preferences! Those people are nice, and I enjoyed having meals with them. But then there was NO POINT for the organiser to ask for my food preferences in advance, wasn't it?

3. We have spent way too much time walking from one place to another. In particular, we participants spent nearly 20 minutes to get to the first "pizza place", we were told that the small shop was closed. A reasonable organiser of food tours should have checked the availability of all restaurants ahead. It was, therefore, a waste of time to all participants. You maybe right to say that those restaurants are small family-run businesses. But! At least the organiser of Da Nang Food Tour can give them a call in advance, right? Is it that hard? Or is it just lack of professionalism and respect to customers? Perhaps it was my bad to have the wrong expectation. But I am definitely not going to recommend to my peers. Below are some photos. As you can see: you will spend lots of time and energy on just walking from one place to another. The coffee they serve wasn’t even a proper Vietnamese coffee but one made with a cheap espresso machine. Such a disgrace.

N.B. To be fair, I must say that the tour guide Anh is a nice person with good English. He tried to accommodate my needs (by ordering some seafood etc.). Maybe it is me being too demanding?

Hi Eric and Rita, Sorry to hear the tour didn't meet your expectations. I agree that it's not really appropriate to discuss profit margins in this forum, but here's what you and your wife (congrats by the way!) got to try on the tour: bánh mì - Vietnamese baguette bánh ram ít - glutinous rice cake bánh căn - mini crispy pancakes bánh bột lọc - tapioca dumplings bánh nậm - steamed rice pancakes with shrimp cà phê sữa đá - coffee with condensed milk bánh tráng trứng - Vietnamese pizza nem rán - deep fried fermented pork bạch tuộc nướng sa tế - BBQ satay octopus rau muống xào tỏi - stir fried morning glory with garlic bò lá lốt - beef in a leaf nai nướng - BBQ antelope nghêu hấp xả - steamed clams with lemongrass and chili tôm nướng muối ớt - BBQ prawns with chili paste hàu nướng mỡ hành - BBQ oysters with peanuts & onion kem bơ - coconut ice cream with avocado About your special requests, we're always happy to honor special requests from our guests, You guys requested seafood, which we made sure to include in your tour. During our correspondence before the tour, you also mentioned "we would definitely love to have some local dishes", which is pretty much everything else on the list. Though obviously food is an important part of the tour, many guests also enjoy exploring the city while also learning about local customs and seeing how everyday people live here in Da Nang. Walking to different places certainly facilitates that. We go to different restaurants every time, according to the guide, the area of the city we are doing the tour, and also the preferences of the customers. It's not really realistic that we call each restaurant every day to see if they are open. Sometimes things close without warning and for no reason. When places do close unexpectedly, our guests generally take it in stride, choosing to see it as part of the local experience here. Thanks for the taking the time to leave us a review. Shaun

Our guide Anh was friendly, knowledgeable and very articulate. He took us to hidden gems that you’d otherwise never know existed and we had some great, traditional Vietnamese dishes and a few cold beers. Excellent value for three hours of entertainment and education about Vietnamese food and culture.

If you are expecting a knowledgable class on food ingredients and culinary prowess this isn’t for you (and I don’t mean a cooking class). An enjoyable, light-on experience in terms of dining but I would classify as a food hop of local eateries, not a tour per se. Not well choreographed and walking in the dark down oncoming traffic is downright silly and potentially troublesome. Been on lots of food tours globally and I generally enjoy the educational perspective, this was however a bit basic for someone who has an in-depth knowledge of food. Sorry but needs improvement.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Our food tour is definitely not a knowledgable class on food ingredients & culinary prowess. It's a chance to try something new in places that you would never think to visit on your own while learning about the local dining scene here in Da Nang. Perhaps your review is in the wrong spot? We had a great night out with our tour-guide Nhan exploring foods of Da Nang. Nhan is local and speaks really good English. He took us (4 adults & 2 kids) to five different eating places and we tried:

bánh mì Ông Tý - Mr Ty's Vietnamese baguette
bánh tráng kẹp - Vietnamese rice cracker pizza
mỳ quảng cá / bò / ếch / heo - quảng noodles with fish / beef / frog / pork
nghêu nướng mỡ hành - BBQ clams with peanuts
tôm rang me - prawns cooked in tamarind sauce
gõi chuối trộn tôm thịt - banana flower salad with shrimp & pork
bò nhúng ớt - beef cooked in boiling chili sauce
chíp chíp hấp - steamed baby clams
chè chuối nướng - grilled banana sweet soup

Plenty of great Tiger beer to wash it all down😀

We got to see the city and try some foods that we would never have found by ourselves. The beef chilli hot-pot was so good 😋.

Real variety of food and venues and the kids loved it. Would recommend these tours to anyway who wants to see the city, eat at the low chairs and likes trying local foods.

To start, I should say that we enjoy food adventures; when we travel, one of our favorite things is trying news favors and textures. As these are things we like, the food tour was a fascinating experience; if you do not like these things, do not go on this tour. You will eat in places you would NEVER go and have dishes you would NEVER eat as a Westerner visiting Da Nang.
Our tour guide, Dong, was amazing. A native of Da Nang, she led our little group (my husband and myself from US and two visitors from Korea) to four different stops. She explained what we we eating, and how to do so. There was nothing written down as a "menu" except for one restaurant so you clearly have to be in the know. Everything was very much what the people of Da Nang eat after work: you are sitting on tiny plastic chairs on the sides of streets. You eat with your fingers or chopsticks. Nothing is fancy. Some of it, by Western standards is a little shocking, such as putting your food garbage on the ground as you are eating.
The best part of the food tour was the conversation: one Vietnamese, two Koreans, and two Americans. We talked about cultural stereotypes, perceptions of beauty (East vs West and within Asian culture exclusively), the geo-political nuances, and everything in between. It was truly an amazing night.

Hi! Thanks for the great review and the disclaimer at the beginning haha. Our tour is definitely not the typical, sterile, watered-down-for-tourists experience. We try to show you how real Da Nang people really eat & live, and I'm glad you guys appreciated the night of great food and conversation with the lovely Ms Dung. Thanks for coming! Shaun

As we said to our extremely impressive guide and host, Anh, we like to immerse ourselves into the culture of the countries/cities we visit and this food tour did just that and more. We would tend not to visit the establishments this tour takes you into as it isn’t part of our culture to eat food this way - but we sure are glad this tour does.

The walking tour of this nature, with the food and company on offer, cannot be missed. We simply can’t decide which dish was our favourite, we tried these dishes and they are all outstanding;

bánh mì - Vietnamese baguette, we’ve always wanted to try and this did not disappoint, so very fresh and scrumptious.

bánh tráng trứng - Vietnamese pizza, pizza that isn’t pizza but is pizza was also incredibly delicious.

bánh tráng bò khô - BBQ rice paper with beef jerky, I’ll repeat what I said above, yummy.

mỳ quảng - Quảng noodles with topping, sooooo fresh and tasty.

bánh xèo - rice pancake with peanut sauce, probably the best food of the night, like all the rest was the best too....this was amazeballs.

cà phê dừa - coconut coffee, something different and unique and moorish.

sinh tố dâu - strawberry smoothies, who can say no to a strawberry smoothie..

kem bơ - avocado with coconut ice cream, those who had it loved it...

Overall this is an incredible night tour, meeting street/family food vendors who excel at what they are producing.
We highly recommend this tour, 100% satisfaction for us.....thanks.

We flew their no frill flight from Hanoi to Da Nang was excellent. The air stewardess is exceptional friendly and polite. Went out of the way to give us extra service to heat up the free sandwich for my senior member. Bamboo Airline
