I had visited silk factories before but this was the best so far as the procedure was explained in great detail. You could see how they unwound the threads from the cocoons, even tried it ourselves, then the rest of the process, even how to dye the silk before the weaving.

I was shown around by Phillip, my motorcycle tour guide. It was interesting to see the silkworms chomping on the mulberry leaves, though this was a demo; the actual raising of silkworms to the cocoon stage takes place off site. The rest of the process took place before our eyes: boiling the coccoons, picking out the threads and spinning them into yarn, and finally weaving and dyeing. Most astonishing for me was to see brocade being woven on Jacquard looms. These venerable machines control the pattern via pre-programmed punch card. In a way they are a forerunner of modern computers. The shop has a selection of quite lovely silk items.

Enjoyed my visit, the Woman that did the introduction, was a hoot. Tour of factory was great. We did buy the bedding package, just be aware that whilst they say it is all silk it's not, only got one sheet which was cotton maybe some silk in it. The Doonah was backed with cotton and silk ? Just check what you are getting, it's still worth it. It took 2 months to arrive. We bought the socks, undies well worth it they are great, Cashmere Scarf was fabulous. Enjoy
