- Bernadette J7 contributionsBest lantern making class in VietnamThis is such a wonderful thing to do in Hoi An and The Lantern Lady does it best of all! I came here last year and loved it so much. This year I brought my friends along the day we arrived in Hoi An. We all had a great time making our own special souvenirs to take home and my friends went back to make more! The Lantern Lady is so helpful and patient, and she makes sure you have a beautiful lantern to take home. I can't recommend this class enough!Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 22, 2023
- LyKon82Middlesbrough, United Kingdom17 contributionsA must do place to visit! My husband and I both made a famous Hoi An Lantern this morning here and absolutely loved every second. Really helpful and patient when teaching us and everything you need to make and take home your very own lantern for a great price. They even provided us with water. Highly recommend anyone visiting Hoi An to do this activity here. It was one of my favourite things to do and have my own lantern to take home as a reminder of my time here.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2023
- Nikki S40 contributionsFantastic experienceWalked past a sign for the lantern lady a little way out of the old town on the first day and even though there were lots more places in town decided I wanted to go back here. It was a great call. The ladies were lovely, it was a great experience and I’m delighted with my finished product. 200,000VND for my large lamp.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 12, 2023
- Maya B4 contributionsBest lantern making in Hoi An!Could recommend this workshop more! The amount of people in our group kept changing and because of the rain some people were delayed - even though we were late and there were 11 of us in total they were so friendly and accommodating! The class itself was so enjoyable and hands on, and we got help when we needed! Overall we had such a fun morning and I’d definitely add it to your Hoi An to do list!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 17, 2023
- Alice Jenkins35 contributionsAmazing!Such a fun experience! This is definitely a must when in Hoi An, and this place is so much cheaper than the other workshops. Helpful every step of the way, and you end up with a really nice souvenir. My lantern ended up a little crooked due to a weak bamboo stick and the lady fixed it for me for free. Such a fun activity for an afternoonVisited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 23, 2023
- JAT77Birmingham, United Kingdom800 contributionsReally great thing to doVisited & opted to do 20cm foldable lantern which would be approximately 1 hour. Neither of us are great with any kind of creative activity but really enjoyed this. Nice informal environment, help when required and you get to keep the lantern.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2023
- Natalie T3 contributionsA must do in Hoi AnWe are a family of 4 with teenager daughters and had a very enjoyable experience at the Lantern Lady. The family was very helpful checking each stage and helping with one to one instruction to help us make our lantern from scratch. Lots of choices in size, shape and fabric. The making process was relatively simple and very relaxing. Perfect for a rainy day, or any day really. Very happy with our lanterns to take home. Might even go back tomorrow! Highly recommend.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 6, 2023
- Laura AHong Kong, China91 contributionsBrilliant experienceSuch a lovely experience! We went with our 3 year old daughter and the family were so friendly and helpful (even giving our little one a raincoat!) There are different sizes, styles and fabrics to choose from. It can get busy as it’s such a popular activity (understandably so!)Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 23, 2023
- Davide P4 contributionsWonderful lanternsThis is an experience I recommend to everyone in Hoi an. The lady is amazing, so gentle and patient, she helped us in every step, always supporting. In the end, even though time had run out, she continued to follow us completing the lantern. We are very proud of the result and we wont’t forget this experience.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 27, 2023
- BlondeAdventurer1London, United Kingdom339 contributionsKind and patient workshop and you’ll surprise yourself!Such a lovely experience - we came in as a walk in and were given somewhere to sit straight away, and water and shown the options we could pick. We did the large lanterns which took over 2 hours (I was a little slower). I am not the best at craft things and they were so patient, kind and helped fix a couple of small mistakes without taking over and I am so excited I made a lantern that I can say I made myself, something I thought might be beyond my ability. Such a memorable experience that made me feel closer to Hoi An and also made a wonderful souvenirVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 27, 2023

What a wonderful way to spend a quiet hour or so! I didn't have a booking, I rode past, saw the sign and went in. Thuy has a beautiful workshop next to her home with examples of the lanterns you can make hanging all around making the place look magical! Firstly, you choose the type and size of lantern you'd like to make and as I was choosing the colour silks I would use, Thuy produced bottles of water for us. She gave me a short history of how the modern day lantern came about and why they use the materials they do. Then it's down to business!! Thuy was thorough in her explanations, attentive in making sure I was following her instructions and so patient 😁 I came away with a beautiful lantern and a fantastic experience which I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Hoi An. Many thanks, Thuy, I wish you well.

An excellent experience, we hired hotel bikes to cycle round and found the lantern lady, whilst I messaged her on Facebook to book, we hadn’t actually arranged a time and it was fine to turn up. There were about 10-14 other people there when we were there at various stages of making their lanterns. Solo travellers, friends, couples and people of all genders.
I appreciated the people working there patiently helping us. You could choose different sizes, pick your colours and opt to make the frame or not. We paid 95,000 VDG each and were thrilled with the result! Can’t fault this experience at all.

We had a brilliant time making lanterns. There were different size options for different costs, ranging from around 90,000 to 250,000 dong. We could choose our colours and the Lantern Lady was extremely patient and generous with her time and efforts. It was meant to take 90 minutes (there is a 60 minute option) but we were there for nearly 2 hours and loved every minute.

All 5 of us made lanterns today and even our kids (14, 13 & 11) were able to do it without much help. So much fun and such a beautiful finished product! Our lanterns are now wrapped in plastic, disassembled, & and ready to take home. This is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Vietnam!

Without doubt the best experience we’ve done in Vietnam!
Myself & partner took the Lantern lady’s class one evening & found it so relaxing and rewarding.
It was nice to learn the craft after witnessing Hôi An in full bloom during the lantern festival itself.
Our teacher Thuy couldn’t be friendlier & allowed us too take as much time as necessary to perfect our pieces.
You begin by selecting the size, shape & deciding if you’d like to create the frame or use a pre-made one.
Once you’ve completed those stages you will choose which fabrics you’d like to use.
The options seem endless & there is definitely a wide enough selection to suit everyone’s taste.
Thuy’s class is perfect for anyone looking wind down after a busy day in Hôi An or even those looking to try something new.
Brilliant experience 10/10

Latern making, is an experience I did not want to miss out on in Hoi an, the city of lanterns.
Ms.Thuy, the lantern lady was patient and we got chatting as she guided me into making my own lantern from start to finish.
It went on over 2hrs and she did not hustle me and patiently taught me how to finesse at each stage. She is experienced and speaks good English.
Do give it a try. Happy to take home a momento, I made on my own.

You can make your own lantern from $4\$6 depending on if you want to make the bamboo frame or buy a pre made one and decorate the frame with different fabrics, we chose to use the pre made frame,
We were helped through the process and were shown how to apply the fabrics to the lantern, a pretty easy process but were nonetheless given a hand if any of the parts weren't going our way.
The lady was very helpful and patient through each stage, it took us just over an hour and there is no need to book. The lanterns also fold down so they are easy to pack.
Would definitely reccomend giving this place a visit it was a lot of fun!

Another guest at our hotel recommended The Lantern Lady and we were so glad we paid a visit. We had an absolutely fantastic time. Everyone was so kind, friendly and patient with us. The owner and her aunt (sorry as I can’t remember the names) had us in stitches as they had a great sense of humour. The range of different style lantern frames and sizes was brilliant and the choice of fabrics beautiful. It was amazing value for the price. We were never rushed and it was so relaxing (the workshop is right by the river). We enjoyed ourselves so much that we went back a second time to make two more lanterns. For anyone visiting Hoi An you should definitely add this to your ‘must do’ list. One of the best experiences we had whilst in Vietnam!!
