Most scared experience of my travelling life, at age 51 with my sister shopping for a lovely piece of lacquered art. My sister tripped on an uneven floor & chipped a small picture the lady claimed was $65 USD when I first inquired, but a larger one caught my eye for $300 USD. The lady claimed my sister chipped two but, as we both pointed out it was only one, she became very irate yelling & obviously upset claiming it would show on their camera. I pointed out that she picked the tiny gold chip up from the one my sister chipped as she fell, but there was no bigger red chip from the other picture. She says she would call the manager & show we broke two. But.. 2 men & 2 more women came who all were extremely aggressive & we were forced to stay in the shop. We got quite frightened & moved to the door as we requested Police to be called. They claimed they would phone but did not, there was no camera & no Police contacted. After 15-20 mins of abuse while trying to explain they continued yelling & pushing us both around. We were then told there were no Police available at this time of night. I rang our Hotel 'LANTANA' & they were extremely helpful & were about to contact the authorities when one man says we only had to pay for one after all. Thankfully a lovely American couple who were watching this shocking event (with many other bystanders supporting us) escorted us down the road afterwards and were appalled. Another lovely English couple said we should just leave the shop but staff blocked the door, physically pushed us, screaming that my sister threw the pictures. One women actually grabbed my sister's (age 54) wrists & threw her into the shop. Interestingly we were charged $60 USD! There were no prices at all anywhere in the shop. Please be aware & BTW I didn't purchase the picture I was going to ship to Australia.

I'm quite wary of buying some cheap chinese-made "art" in tourist towns nearly anywhere in the world, but I was delighted to find this store while on holiday with my wife. I was drawn in by some rather original and cheerful-looking framed pieces that I assumed were prints. After talking with the owner I found out that they are actually hand-painted by the artists on a traditional paper and then mounted within the frame. I looked at the lacquered pieces also and ended up buying one of the smaller lacquer pieces and one of the pieces painted on the "zah" paper. The lacquered piece was a bit pricey, but in line with the craftsmanship that went into it. The piece on the zah paper was rather amazingly inexpensive, about 20 quid or $35 US. Each of the artists' bios are on the wall and their education and awards are fairly impressive. Highly recommend checking this place out if you are looking for a unique, legitimate and high-quality piece to bring home to remind you of your adventure.
