I had the pleasure of going on three photo walks with Pieter during my recent stay in Hoi An. I chose 'Morning in the alleys', 'Sunrise with the Fishermen', and 'Sunset with the farmers'. It was fabulous and met & exceeded my expectations and appetite for street photography, portraits, buildings & landscapes, capturing a piece of Vietnam. Pieter is not only an excellent and creative photographer, but is able to open doors to people's homes and provide valuable context and information on Vietnamese culture and way of living. He easily tuned in to my level of photography and was able to provide valuable tips, both technical and creative. It is a very personalized experience and Pieter is working around the client's expectations and circumstances, individual itinerary, pickup etc. I wish Pieter all the best for his photography business and creative journey. Highly recommended!

Pieter was a patient teacher who explained very well everything we wanted to know! So we learned a lot and it was also much fun. Communication went fluently. Extra Plus is that you receive login so that, afterwards, you can find everything you learned explained on his website.

We did a morning tour in a local area with Pieter. It was great to see areas that we would not have found alone. Pieter was very helpful, explaining local customs and suggesting different photos to take. This was the second time we had done a tour with Pieter. It was very interesting to see local life around Hoi An and we would definitely recommend Pieter.

Hi, thanks a lot for going on one of my tours again. Nice to hear that you also enjoyed this one, even though it was the first time I did a tour in that particular area. I might even do it again as there are many interesting things to see and photograph there!

I had an absolutely wonderful photography tour with Pieter. He was able to give me contextual information on Vietnamese culture as well as got me up close with subjects to take portraits. The images I was able to get will give me joy looking at them for years to come.
Highly recommended!

I loved this experience! You get amazing tips and insights into both photography AND Vietnamese life.
Pieter is incredibly gifted and and has a lovely and patient manner when imparting his knowledge.
It was a great balance between technique, composition and mindset. I went in a little anxious about my skill level but it doesn't matter at all. He's great at reassuring you, suggesting new angles to take photos from and most importantly helping you to confidently interact with locals and capture moments. It was lovely walking through the village and farmland in golden hour and cruising down the Thu Bon River. Thanks Pieter for my most memorable Vietnam experience.

Being a professional photographer myself, I recommend Pieter Janssen to anyone visiting Vietnam and want to witness an unexplored side of beautiful streets in Hoi An. The tour started with a cup of hot coffee and he started with the basics of camera equipments and gave other photography instructions that were really helpful. Soon after, we walked into the streets of Hoi An, which was the most special part of his tours. He took us to places where a normal tourist wouldn't even go. He was very friendly and calm all throughout the walk. He is highly patient as he would always let me finish the picture I am trying to take no matter how much time it takes. His commendable local knowledge helped me a lot in my trip to Vietnam. He taught us different words (For ex. 'Dep' meaning Beautiful in English) in local language that made local residents more responsive towards us. I believe I used the word Dep more than 20 times after that, meaning, I got 20 awesome portraits in my trip to Vietnam :). I would specially like to mention one incident where one of the participants from our photo tour wasn't feeling well, so we took a break on her request, he was kind enough to extend the tour for the minutes we lost in that break which I believe was truly professional. He is an amazing person without whom I would have not been able to discover unseen side of Hoi An streets. The Photo walk with Pieter Janssen is an extraordinary experience for anyone visiting Hoi An. Thanks to him for the amazing pictures I got!

Saw Pieters reviews on trip advisor and compared that with the many negative 'no show' reviews from the other company so that's why I chose him. I arrived 10min early and he was already there! Pieter was very attentive to our needs ( there were 2 clients ) and dealt with each issue very professionally and knowledgeably. I personally gained the confidence and skills required to take portraits of strangers thanks to his tips and techniques ( so much more practical than reading about it in a book ) Still have a way to go with this but by the end of the tour I was comfortable engaging victims, I mean subjects... and getting great results. Lots of top advice on settings, composure etc etc. I thought I knew a lot of this struff already but I gained so much from this experience that I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Pieter to all levels of photographer from novice to seasoned intermediate like me. I'm sure I will progress hugely from the course and the advice. Don't be put off if you only have a point and shoot. The lady with me on this tour had one of these and she had a great experience too. Ps. None of my photos are edited in any way - I don't have my laptop with me but probably won't change them anyway. We'll see when they are on the big screen!

This is my first trip advisor review and I feel like Pieter and the service he provides definitely deserves it! He was willing to meet for a morning tour the morning after the Tet New Year celebrations. He's a very nice and approachable guy. The tour started off with introductions and going over the main ingredients for a photograph: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Even though I already knew the basics of most of it I still learned quite a bit. For this I highly suggest you bring a DSLR camera or any camera capable of adjusting these settings manually. You can do this tour with a point and shoot but I think you can get so much more out of it with a manual camera.

We set off on the walk through the back alleys of Hoi An. Away from all the tourists and got to see some amazing colors and patterns that not many people wouldn't go out of there way to see. Also met some of the locals who were really nice and not pestering like the ones you meet at the tourist markets. Twice we were invited in by total strangers for food and drinks. It was during this part of the tour where I felt like I became a better photographer and I really got to know Hoi An. Pieter taught us some valuable lessons on compositions, lines, patterns colors, framing, and most importantly how to approach people and take amazing photos. He really showed us how to look at the world like a photographer. He even threw in a lot of cool facts about Vietnamese culture.

But please if you're gonna book a tour don't be that person that doesn't show and not even email with a reason. Two people stood him up on a tour with us and we wasted some valuable time waiting on them. I'm pretty sure that this is not his main job and he does this mostly because he loves photography. He really takes time out of his day to come out and make better photographers so please don't be that jerk that stands him up and if you are at least have the decency to send him a heads up. That's all.

Other than that I feel that this tour is definitely worth it for the price. If you love taking pictures or want to get better at it then this tour is a must!

We did a morning walk with Pieter, starting with coffee and a run through of the morning. Pieter addressed any camera concerns before we headed off into a quiter area of Hoi An to learn to take some amazing shots.

i am a very amateur photographer with not alot of camera experience , I found Pieter to be patient and very helpful with my questions.
The walk is designed for both the beginner and more experienced photographer. I throughly enjoyed the 3 and abit hours spent with Pieter.
A great tour if your looking to see another side of Hoi An

I was only visiting Hoi An for a short space of time and wanted to make the most of it. My interest is people, cultures and photography. I discovered Hoi An Photo Walks/Tours online.
What better way to serve my interests all in one go by attending one of Pieters' tours.
Pieter is very experienced and knowledgeable in the people, culture and photography. He ensured I had a good understanding on the many functions of my camera and practical tips of how I could improve the images.
The group was small so ample opportunities to learn as you go.
I spent the whole day on two tours, the morning tour was a walk in the backstreets and alleys of Hoi An away from the scores of tourists. This was focussed on portrait images. I found the people very friendly and was nervously allowed to approach them very closely using some useful words and tips given by Pieter.
The second tour in the afternoon was on one of the surrounding islands only a short ferry trip away; this focussed on farming, landscapes and boatyards also some low light photography.
Pieter is very patient and explains things in simple terms without the jargon.
A fantastic experience and learning for me that I will remember and use wherever I go. Very pleased with my results too from the images captured.
I recommend this to keen photographers no matter what camera you use, there is always something to learn to improve your skills.
