It can be confusing to choose a tailor in Hoi An, I was recommended here and I was extremely happy. I have had suits made in Singapore l, Hong Kong and Thailand and this place is amongst the best. Their attention to detail and goal of customer satisfaction cannot be faulted.

You are not pressured or rushed at all and assisted as needed through the process.
In addition to suit jackets and waist coat I had custom silk pillow cases and cushion covers made with a mix of silk and dress martial, the finished products where stunning.

Don’t waste time elsewhere, they are knowledgeable, professional, caring and make an excellent product that is also good value.

Excellent service from start to finish.
I purchased 2 made to measure linen jacket ( Blue and Beige) . The level of attention to detail and service was superb , with a couple of minor adjustments they were perfect. This lead to me buying 2 made to measure shirts and my wife 2 made to measure "Jump suits". I am sure the ladies will remember me ( a big English man and an his wife) , every time I went in I purchased something else . I had to stop visiting as I was was so impressed with the shop and the owner / her team of professional staff. Thank you ladies

This is the best tailors I have ever been to. Have been back now four times over several years and never been disappointed at the service and product provided by there lovely and amazingly talented people.

We have had casual shirts. dress shirts, dresses, blazers, jackets and full suits made in that time. The quality is always amazing. The attention to detail when they are making the items is brilliant.

I cannot tell you how many times I have had compliments when wearing the clothing I have had made by this team/family!

They are fun and polite to deal with, create great clothes and very reasonably priced always.

Do yourself a favour and go see Hue and the team at Tailor Phuong Nam in Hoi An. They are amazing.

I ordered two dresses. I chose the fabrics from some fabric swatches at the shop. We were so surprised that evening when she actually came to our hotel to apologize and say that the silk I ordered for my dress was no longer in stock at any of her suppliers. She actually brought some additional material so I could choose right at the hotel. This is amazing customer service the silk dress she made me is absolutely beautiful. She made another dress for me too that needed some alterations and they were done quickly and promptly. I highly recommend this tailor shop for all your needs.

I was shopping around in the area for dresses. The younger sister was so welcoming that I went into the shop to browse further. They had such lovely designs and material. The sisters gave us ideas. I only had a day and they were ready by afternoon for trial and dresses were ready same night. Ended up purchasing 5 outfits for my daughter and I. My daughter was super excited with the dress and the whole process with the sisters..

Fitting was good and they took care to ensure the same. Will definitely purchase again

tl;dr

1) Suits are well-constructed, full-canvas, fabric selection isn't as extensive as I had hoped but am still happy with the wool, cashmere, silk blend used. Some pants have less fabric at the bottom hem than I think is good, but it's ultimately a small issue since I don't intend on taking out any more length and the pants fall well in spite of the lack of fabric.

2) Fitting was accurate though rushed, which has more to do with my timeline than the shop. Thao pushed us to be as fast as possible so that we could have three fittings vs. two, which was a good call. I still had some chalk on my suits at the end. Not a big deal, and we literally did our final fitting a few hours before we had to fly out, so totally understandable since we were in a hurry!

3) Thao charged only labor for a dress that didn't turn out as we hoped, all without us asking. Great service. Everyone was attentive and friendly. Never felt like we were getting upsold, pushed into purchases, etc.

4) Super nice ladies.

5) Good prices, good deal less than the more expensive, recommended places.

Warning! This is a long review. I'm usually a bullet point kind of guy, but finding a tailor in Hoi An can be a harrowing experience. There are so many shops and people have different tastes and tolerances for clothing (there is no accounting for taste), so I'm going to write the kind of review that I wish I could have read before starting out on my search.

Now, before I get to the review, I'd like to share some high level thoughts on prices and shops so that you understand where I'm coming from.

I'm positive that many of the shops are high quality. I've met a lot of people who are afraid of getting cheated on materials, and my thought is that with the advent of sites like TripAdvisor, it only takes a few bad reviews of this nature to ruin a business's chances of getting any customers. Look at the fabric, scratch it with your nails to check for polyester, use your hands and common sense as you check out the examples around town and you'll be in good shape. If you want super 130 wool for your suit and end up with super 120, and you can't tell the difference, I don't think it's a big deal GIVEN the low, low prices you're paying.

Also, while I think that you generally get what you pay for, it's important to note that rent is REALLY HIGH in Hoi An. Shops likely don't operate at much of a profit given how high rents are, once you take into account materials and labor. Given that, it makes perfect sense that some the tailors that are closer to the hotels have higher prices...and given their location, I think it makes sense that many of them have more customers. You'll likely find, as I did, that the shops that are closer and more expensive have hotels sending their guests along for "good deals." Since there's a lot of commission going around in this town, tailors likely have to build in the added commission to the price on top of the rent.

Bargaining is important. I met a man who had two suits made at a popular, more expensive shop for 300 pounds each (he was from the UK). I met another man who went to the same shop and had two suits made for 300 euros each. Both claimed to have bargained a lot, and both mentioned getting same cashmere, wool and silk fabric. Now as long as you are happy with the price you pay, no sweat...but obviously these two guys paid very different prices at the same place for the same stuff...

As others have mentioned, come in with ideas and example pictures, ESPECIALLY if you're on a tight timeline. Also, learn as much as you can/care to about fabric and construction so that you can make some educated decisions. I knew nothing about suit construction, but an hour of internet research gave me enough to know all about different wools, full canvas vs half canvas vs fused suits, the difference between working and non-working suit cuffs, etc.

_________________________

So with all this in mind, I was looking for a place that was a bit off the beaten path with a good reputation with the assumption that many of the more expensive places needed to build rent and commission from hotels into their budget. I wanted to buy three suits with extra trousers, some shirts, and some dresses for my wife. Given the size of my purchase, I expected that I would be able to bargain well. Luckily, my wife and I ran across a nice Dutch couple during our travels. One of them had several dresses made at Phuong Nam, and she was very happy with the quality and prices. She is a professional hairdresser and has modeled for high-profile hairdressing competitions in the Netherlands, so I figured that she knew good fit and quality. With her suggestion in mind, I walked around town, touched the clothing of many of the popular and less popular shops, and concluded that there wasn't a huge difference in what I was seeing. That's just my opinion and experience.

In the evening I emailed Thao Le, the owner, and asked her if she could accommodate me given that I was only going to be in town for two and a half days... she responded early the next morning politely and enthusiastically and told me to swing by.

Once my wife and I got there, she and her tailors began measuring us and choosing so as to save time. We both had ideas of what we wanted, though I had a much clearer idea that my wife did, whic hwas helpful (more on that later). After measurements and fabric, I negotiated with Thao, taking into account the size of our purchase an dmy very cursory knowledge of prices in the area. I ended up paying a good deal less for each suit AND extra set of trousers than the two guys I mention in the top of my review. I bought three shirts, each costing much less than an off-the-rack shirt at Bloomingdales. My wife purchased a dress and a suit made of thick winter fabrics.

The Suits:

Fabric: Each suit (one navy, one french blue, one charcoal) was made with a wool, cashmere, silk blend. I went in wanting super 100 wool, but it was clear to me that this shop didn't get THAT specific with fabrics. This worried me, but the fabric felt like quality and given that I wasn't spending an arm and a leg, I was happy to go with it.

Construction: The suits are full canvas, not fused, and therefore drape very nicely. The suits, though not made with heavy fabric, are hefty-- the canvas, lining, and material add up to a nice handful, which to me is a sign of quality with suits that are not specifically summer suits. I asked for working/surgeon's cuffs on the jackets which turned out great (the buttons work vs being there for show). Thao immediately let me know that the buttons would not be kissing (overlapping) since they'd be functional, which I thought was a good sign of her attention to detail. I had an additional ticket pocket added to each jacket, which feels well constructed, not flimsy. Finally, each jacket had double vents that look even and drape well.

Fitting: Thao and her tailors were accurate and attentive -- I also knew how I wanted my suits to fit, so this was a good combination. After the first fitting I had the shoulders taken in, coats shortened, sleeves shortened, trousers slimmed down and shortened, and by the second fitting the jackets were nearly perfect.

I should have come with dress shoes...I used an oversized pair that Thao kept on hand, but this was less than ideal. The trousers came back too short after the first fitting, and subsequent fittings lengthened them enough, though I wish there were more fabric left in the trousers so that I could take them out more if need be. While I think the tailors in her workshop (the clothing is not handled on premises) could have been better here, I don't think it's affected the clothing or my experience, especially given the price. Now, if I were having something made to measure for significantly more money, I would have quibbled, though again, this was not much of an issue since it didn't affect how the trousers fall and I don't intend on taking out more length in the future.

Shirts:

Fabric: I chose a silk and cotton blend. The shirts are slightly less matte than pure cotton, but are more wrinkle-resistant.

Construction: Buttons are solid, stitching is even and clean. I went with spread collars for all three shirts, though she offered other styles. Thao suggested hand-washing to keep the collars stiff, but I likely will just launder then normally.

Fitting: After the first fitting they fit nearly perfectly...after the second fitting they were perfect, with slim armholes, just enough room across the chest and stomach to look fitted without being tight, arms long enough for just enough cuff to show on a well-fitted jacket. One note here...if you wear an undershirt normally, make sure to wear one for your fitting. Shirts were fitted to a specific tolerance, and an undershirt does make them fit more tightly than I'd like.

Final Products:

The suits and shirts fit perfectly, in spite of a rushed fitting on the morning before my flight. Ideally I would have had another day so that things would be less rushed. MY suits still had chalk marks that I easily wiped off at home -- again, not a big deal, and if I were spending more I would have been more annoyed about this, but I also put Thao and her tailors on a tight timeline, so I'm partially to blame.

My wife's dresses fit perfectly as well...however, one of the dresses didn't drape the way she had expected. This was a combination of the fabric choice and the dress not being an exact replica of the photo provided (which is to be expected). My wife was clearly disappointed...but GET THIS....Thao apologized and explained that had she spent more time with my wife during the fabric selection, that the dress would have turned out differently since she would have suggested something different (Thao was busy with me during the fabric selection...again, had we more time this wouldn't have been as rushed). So, Thao charged us only the tailoring labor and absorbed the cost of materials etc. We felt very good about that.

All in all, a great experience, but VERY involved. AS they say, you can have in cheap, fast, or good. Choose two. Well, I think I got close to all three with Phuong Nam, with good service to boot.

I asked for two dresses to be made, both were designs off the model so I assumed this would be an easy, hassle free request. Boy was I wrong!
I went in for my first fitting to find my dresses with loose threads, chalk marking all over, poorly tailored and wrinkled.
One of the dresses had a large defect on the front, the manager ( or owner perhaps, she appeared to be in charge) told me that the chalk marking will wash out, and that the loose threads were " no problem, easy to fix" ( as she took the dress out of my hands and cut them off herself) in response to the defect she didn't seem to think it was a big deal. I made it clear that I wasn't happy so she reluctantly said she would remake it.
The following day I went in and was disappointed again. The newly made dress was worse than the first. It was way to tight to start ( so she took it back to have it adjusted- I came back 30mins later). When I tried it on for the second time it was still terrible. The back of the dress bunched at my waist and sides and the side lines were not aligned straight. When again I pointed out this obvious poor quality, the employees were quick to brush off my concern and told me that this is what this style of dress should look like.
We had been to this store five times for fittings and it was clear that they would not be able to deliver a quality product. I have had dresses made in Bangkok in the past and I have to admit that this was by far the worst experience I've had with a tailor.
In the end I only bought one dress ( complete with loose threads and poor stitching and chalk marks) I refused to buy the other dress. The staff were apologetic ( the owner was not in the second day) and offered to sell me the poorly made dress that didn't fit at a discounted price.

If you want anything quality made skip this tailor and find someone else.
Very disappointed

Hello Cathy, My name is Thao Le, the owner of Tailor Phuong Nam. I hope you are doing well! Firstly, I would like to say my highest respect to your feedback on my Review List. I am very sorry to hear that you was not happy with the experience you had in my shop. If you think the product and the service we offered couldn't satisfy you , I would like to say my sincere apologies to you. Secondly, I would also like to express kindly the experience me and my staff had with you since we had your first step into the shop. You was welcomed as a Queen. We were willing to shuffle all the fabrics so you could choose the best ones for your two dresses and everything seemed alright in the ordering time. The first fitting in the next day, the cotton dress fitted perfectly. The strapless chiffon dress looked beautiful but needed a little smaller on the top part. Tailor-made things need many fittings. As you told you would left at 6pm the next day, so we would like you to come for the second fitting in a few hours later on . When you came back for the second fitting, the two dress looked great to be honest . You and your husband seemed to be happy with the result either. Before my staff took them away to do the checking, cleaning, trimming and wrapping as we always do these with all the products, you wanted to check yourself. Unexpectedly, you found a small defect, likely the fabric was not being dyed well ( as you and your husband also agreed) between the ruches and a fake stitching on the bodice . Because it was a fake stitching, it just needed to be taken off in a second. It was definitely not a big issue. But for the defect between the ruches,I was the one who suggested to make a new dress and 100% happy to do this, not reluctant or hestitant at all. I would also like to tell you is that the last time you came, I went out for the New Year Praying with my family. I didn't mean to ignore my responsibility on your order at all. I just wish your final fitting and the Praying was not in the same time, so everything could be done under my control. But I heard that after you decided to get only one dress, one of my staff asked many times if you were surely happy to take the other dress or not , and you did confirm her that you were totally happy...Then you left the shop after payment.... And one final thing is that, in my shop, there is a sign that tells all the customers should directly let us know your concerns first, then everything will be better for both customers and businesses. You have the right not to take your order if you are not happy. In Buddhism, we are taught that we should treat others the same way we wish they treat us. This has been my strongest belief in all my life. I hope after reading this, you could change your mind and accept my sincere apologies and contact me via email " thao_tailor@yahoo.com" for a best negotiation. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and your support. I wish you and your family all the best. Thao from Tailor Phuong Nam.

Trang and her team of tailors are nothing but exceptional. They managed to turnaround 5 dresses and 1 skirt in under 10 hours. The dresses are amazing and only 2 had to be altered quickly at the fitting. Would highly recommend this place. Great service, good choice of materials and quality goods provided in record time.
