We had a great time with this cooking class, and Txao was a fantastic guide! The tour of the market was very informative and the food we prepared was delicious. I️ will definitely be cooking this meal again for my family!

Disappointed. I wish I hadn't wasted my time/money doing this.

"Boat trip + Market Tour + Cultural Immersion Cooking Class" (Originally advertised on Cookly website)

I booked via Cookly and noticed they didn't post my review so I'm posting it here. Firstly, the restaurant was hard to find because we were given a different street name to the name the street it is actually on. It would help if there were clearer instructions.

The guide to the market and boat ride needs improvement. Prior to the start of the tour we were told to just sit down at the restaurant - we waited about 15 min with no instruction on what was going on. Tour guide then came up to us and told us to follow her. She didn't introduce herself or tell us where we were going. A couple of minutes of silently following her, I finally asked what we were doing and she told us we were going to the market. A lot of the market was just following her in silence. I have been on a few tours before with other companies and I thought this was a really big missed opportunity to teach us a lot of things. On occasion she pointed things out. But mainly we would just walk in silence and I had to stop her and ask what things were. Most of her answers were short and she didn't elaborate much. Also, I was with another person and he could not hear any of what she was saying because she spoke so quietly.

We then went on a boat ride. Again, majority of it we just sat in silence. I feel she could have spent this time telling us about the culture or history or anything at all but we just sat in silence. Then we were at the restaurant and we had the cooking class with Thinh.

The cooking class was enjoyable. Thinh is very friendly and a great teacher. This was the highlight of the morning. The food we cooked wasn't particularly exciting but the class was good.

Considering this is advertised as "You will also have the chance to explore all the scents and flavours of local ingredients at our chef-guided market tour. You will learn how to choose, buy, and cook your ingredients in the traditional Vietnamese." I did not feel it delivered. If I was being guided by a chef on the tour, she was not very informative or enthusiastic about food, and she certainly didn't explain how to "choose and buy" the food. She barely pointed things out. Also, since it was advertised as a "Cultural Immersion Cooking Class" I didn't feel like this delivered. I could have just walked through the market and ridden a boat on my own and not paid someone to sit next to me.

In hindsight, I would not have taken this class if I had known it would be like this. I would have done another tour or gone with a different company. The guide for the first part of the tour needs to be more interesting. Frankly, it was very boring. If they skipped that part of the 'class' and just had the cooking class this would be a very different review but still not remarkable.

Great experience

I had a really good time with Kahn who is our chef. He was great. We were 7 in family with my father in low who is 82 years old.
He never wore an apron in his life and it was his 1st time to cook with us all together.
We made 4 different dishes and especially making steamed rice paper was interesting.
The recipe was simple but every dish was so tasty.
It was an incredible experience and I strongly recommend this cooking class.

We attended a cooking class as part of our organized tour (thanks UCS and Sinh!). Looks like we made the same fish in banana leaves, money bags and eggplant as others have described. Was an enjoyable and amusing experience. Staff coached us along so we couldn't mess up. Thoroughly enjoyed eating the food we prepared.

Trinh was an excellent guide, beginning with an informative walk through the local food market where everything was on display - from chickens to fish to spices and more. A cruise down the river cooled us down as we headed back to the restaurant to learn the art of creating local Vietnamese fare. Our menu included Ban Xeo, grilled fish in banana leaves, "money bags" and clay pot eggplant with rice. I would highly recommend this for travelers wanting to learn a bit about the ingredients and techniques used for the tasty food found in Hoi An. We couldn't eat it all!!

Cooking class plus vegetable garden and market tours was a blast! We made rice paper, spring rolls, money bags, egg plant in clay pot and fish in banana leaf. It all tasted amazing! Lilly was quick to adapt to my daughters food allergy and answered all my gardening and market tour questions with ease. Absolutely a wonderful class and great use of time, staffed by professionals. Thanks Lilly for teaching us!!!

Trinh our guide and cooking teacher was a delight. We took a taxi out to see the organic vegetable gardens then onto the markets and returned to the restaurant to begin the cooking class. A very enjoyable morning and we prepared dishes that tasted lovely and I am confident I could cook it on my return home to Australia. Thank you Trinh and also thank you to Moon Tham from Hung Vuong Travel Co Ltd for organising it.
