Downstairs is a retail store that sells colorful masks with Vietnamese designs and upstairs is a performance arts theater that woos tourists by the bus load.
We saw a few busloads of them trudge in to go upstairs as our kids worked on their own masks.

The store has the Master of the craft and his 'under study'. They give you tips and guidance on theme colors and brush techniques and then let you go. Mind you, their English language skills are down at the bottom.

There is an occasional look over the shoulder but to the greater extent you're in your own with your creation.

It doesn't take very long ... Maybe an hour or less of painting (and you could walk away and come back after the drying is done) and you would come out with something unique from Hoi An to take home.
And the whole thing is at a very reasonable price.

The heavens opened and the river burst it banks so with 3 children under ten in tow we were stuck for activities until I remembered seeing this mask painting place beneath the performance space. A very chilled 2 hours choosing masks, designs and then painting. A very reasonable price at 200,000 doing each too. Not advertised enough!

The master & his staff were very kind & helped our 2 small kids (3 & 6 years old) to paint their masks beautifully following models they had chosen themselves. We also saw a group of adults paint their own masks with creativeness, not following any model. Everybody really enjoyed the workshop & were proud of their piece of art.

We tried this out as something different too do while in hoi an.
You're given a white paper mache face to paint as you wish..
Very calming too do away from the usual bustle and bustle of tourist things.
If you have children with you on holiday and it's raining, you won't go wrong by letting them have fun with their imagination and paint the faces..
And you get too take your creation home with you.
We as adults had great fun doing this as well.
200VND per person to have a go.
There's also many beautiful masks that the workshop have already painted in so many varied and interesting designs.
All for sale, prices clearly marked for each size masks.

This shop has a number of traditional Vietnamese opera masks and masks in that style. It also has more modern masks shaped like opera masks, but with superhero, cartoon, etc., faces. They also have masks that reflect Vietnamese minority groups. The staff is very knowledgeable, and you can meet the man who makes the masks. These are not those basket-woven asks without eyeholes that you see all over Hoi An; these are plaster and papier mache and can be worn. Even if you don't buy, it's a fun place to visit. They also offer classes on mask making, but we didn't have time for that.
