Whenever I visit cities/urban areas around the world, I quite enjoy stopping by the “green spaces” in those areas. This included the time my wife and I spent in Colonia del Sacramento. During our exploration of this historic city, we took a brief break to slow down and people watch. While there is nothing much to see in Plaza Mayor, it is a nice place to gather bearings and decide what other places to explore. There are also cafes and historical sites within a short walking distance once visitors are ready to continue walking around Colonia del Sacramento.

This plaza is a nice restful and quiet area to stop and "smell the roses". This really is the original area of the Governors House, not the mayor. Today there is not much to see here except the foundation stones to the old home and city buildings. Today it is just a quiet plaza surrounded by the Catholic Basilica de Santisimo Sacramento, restaurants and souvenir shops.

BOTTOM LINE: Loved the walkway stone paths and the small old bronze water fountain in the center of the plaza. The area has many old shade trees and a few sitting benches. MY RATING: 8/10

We visited Colonia del Sacramento on a beautiful sunny day. Plaza Mayor was a great spot to stop for a break from the sun under the shady old trees. We could hear/see parrots in the trees. There were a few vendors selling souvenirs. This is the main plaza in the heart of the historic district that was founded by the Portuguese. It is surrounded by historic buildings and a few restaurants.

A little tired but with lots of history. Lots of souvenir/handicraft sellers hang out here as well with much the same as each other.

Usually a plaza mayor is the main plaza or square in a town. That is not the case in Colonia del Sacramento. This plaza is near the Puerto de Campo, the reconstructed gate. It has some benches if you want to chill or read a book among the shade of its trees.

This is a nice square. A pleasant place to pause while walking around Colonia, with a few spots to grab a bite to eat around as well.

This very large plaza contains open parkland, with nice shady trees on hot days, so it's a good place to take a break if you're walking the old town. The surrounding housing and businesses are all colourful and quaint, so it's a good idea to walk each side.

The plaza was initially created during the founding of the town and was the largest open space in the area. It was originally used for military maneuvers. Over the years the plaza has been transformed by incorporating gardens and pathways. It still remains the largest square in the old town and surrounded on all sides by historic buildings.
