Dating from the 17th century in Portuguese style this is Uruguay's oldest church. Whitewashed and plain, but very attractive in its simplicity.

From the inside it's smaller than it looks from the outside. It's relatively simple. It's a landmark right off the small shade tree covered square, next to some fairly recently dug-up historical colonial foundations. Anyway, it compliments and amplifies the historical elements of what is...More

This is a lovely well kept 17th century church. Some nice religious displays inside the church. Well worth a visit.

As with most places in Colonia, it's a very pretty church and even more peaceful than the streets! The sun was pretty much at its hottest so was a respite from the heat and a lovely place to just sit and contemplate

This would have been better if it included a guided tour. There was some old art on the walls, some of it from the 1700s, and perhaps 1600s. The alter was beautiful.

Here and all around Colonia. Do a guided tour to really get to know the history otherwise you can easily Google it.

The church seems to go by a number of different names, but it sits in the heart of the old town and is definitely a highlight to visit. It seems to be open all day and into the evening, which is useful. Both the exterior...More

The photo that I have included in this review has turned my life around. Never would I have thought that a small town like Colonia would lead me back to the Good Lord and His Mercy. I have been #blessed by this site.

The oldest church in the city. It dates from 1680. Of course, this is not the original one which was small and unpretentious. The present church dates back to 1810. Some 40 years ago it underwent a serious restoration, including a conceptual refurbishment. A World...More

This was right across the square from where we had lunch, so it was an easy decision to stop in. I've called it quirky because it certainly didn't have the traditional ornamentation one expects in a Catholic church. There were wooden sculptures hanging from the...More
