So historical place! Here all the legends come to life. I like old trees in the park, many roses, and, of course, the unique architecture of the University. I wandered to see the church in the Residence. I haven't seen it anywhere in Ukraine.

It doesn’t take much to avoid negative tourism experience in Ukraine – all you have to do is to make your prior research and do some simple arrangements. Otherwise you have only yourselves to blame for any disappointments.

The Residence of Bukovynian Metropolites is an acting Chernivtsi University. Therefore visitors are allowed inside the church (remarkable experience that shouldn’t be missed!) and the University premises with a tour guide. Then the University garden can be then attended by visitors on their own.

Tours by the University guides are at the very least available in English, German and French.

I never got a response to the e-mail sent to the address in the Uni web page. So upon arrival I called a guide I knew in Chernivtsi and she gave me the phone number of the English-speaking University guide who was on duty that day, so I easily arranged a tour on the same very day. If you need contact details, feel free to send me a message.

But even if you don’t pre-arrange a tour, you can join the group scheduled next. The guard keeps the visitors at the gate before the guide arrives. If the tour has just started, you can still join the group. The cost of a group English tour as of Sep 13 was petty UAH 20 (US$ 2.4) per person.

We visited Chernivtsi University last year on our tour of the city. This year, while visiting Chernivtsi in June 2011 it was designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This building was designed by a Czech architect in the latter part of the 19th century for the purpose of housing the Bukovinian Metropolitan. It later became the Chernvitsi University.
The university combines different architectural styles and its crowning glory, is its wonderfully coloured tiled roof. A definite must see on a trip to Chernivtsi.

Very limited foreign language tours here but doesn't matter just join the next Ukrainian one (only 1 eur) to see the church and famous rooms. It is a very beautiful building complex and a main sight in the city (It is unesco after all). Just tell the guard at the entrance you want to join a tour and he might put you on the phone with one of their guides for easier communication ( don't expect English from the guard or the guide, i had to rely on high school French but it worked).

This is an incredibly beautiful set of buildings - quite unique. The very helpful lady at the tourist info office in Chernivtsi told us that we could get a guided tour here in English. As we don't speak any Ukrainian she even wrote on a piece of paper that we would like a guided tour and told us to hand it to the person at the entrance. Unfortunately the security guy at the entrance was either having a really bad day or he really hates tourists because after we handed over the piece of paper, he barked something at us in Ukrainian and waved us away. Luckily for us there was a lovely Ukrainian tourist who told us that there was no English tour that day but there would be a tour in Russian in 20 minutes. Whilst we don't speak Russian, she said it would still be worthwhile as we would be able to get into the buildings and see inside. So thanks to her we did the Russian tour and got inside - which is even more impressive than the outside. Our lovely Ukrainian lady also translated some of what the tour guide was saying as we walked through the building. There's also a beautiful Orthodox church within the grounds and we were lucky enough to be able to watch part of a wedding whilst we were there. A must see in Chernivtsi (apart from Mr Unhelpful at the gate).

Beautiful architecture. It is definitely worth coming and looking around the place. There are guided tours which allow to go inside the main University building.
