I like this place so much!! Saint Anthony Caves are the first caves monks dig up in Ukraine. This place is very very old. When you come inside you feel all that great and holy energy. Here are located underground churches and some people say that sometimes they see how the spirit of one monk goes through underground streets. It's a little terrible but also very exciting. Highly recommend visiting if you'll come to Chernigiv!

One of the most sacred and first churches in Ukraine.
10th century - its quite enough to say - WOW!
Extremely recommended to visit to know the history of Orthodox in this part of the world.

These vaults are an ideal visit during the hot summer days, after a couple of minutes getting your eyes used to the dark you will find an array of linked rooms in one of Chernihivs best known attractions. You need to pay a little extra for a camera and taking one of the guided tours is best. The walk from the centre is beautiful.

So. This place is cool, but it's a smaller version of Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv - so, if you've already been there, keep your expectations lowered. For those that haven't, this is an underground church with the skeletons/bones of monks and saints. The coolest part about this location is that it's close to three other must sees - the kurgans, the WWII memorial, and the Trinity Monastery. Also. If you're gonna take pictures, you have to pay for an extra ticket for permission.

There's a small church at the entrance, then you descend into a maze of tunnels that get smaller, colder and darker as you go deeper into the hill. A series of small chapels, including one tiny rotunda with room above for a small choir, lead to cells and burial chambers for medieval monks. We had a great guide and an interpreter who grew up in Chernihiv and had studied archaeology in the hand-dug caves. There is limited English signage.

We (a couple) visited Saint Anthony's Caves sometime in October.
While going more and more into the caves, it became more and more impressive. The temperature was getting lower, and there was humidity in the atmosphere.
The caves looked very old and original. We could see around bones and icons. The whole atmosphere was very creepy. The lighting gave an additional scary tone to the place, as well as the guide's stories about the ghost.
The fee with a student ID was around 50 cents, which is very cheap!
Last but not least, we felt very nice seeing so many tourists visiting the caves of Saint Anthony located in the pretty Chernihiv! And don't forget to make a wish before leaving, which must not be related to material needs!

There are two levels to this monastery. On the upper level, which is nice even walking, and an opportunity to see the monastic buildings which are most impressive. After this there is a steep walk down to the cave area which is dark, with very narrow passages, not a good idea for anyone suffering from claustrophobia. However, the caves are well worth seeing and I would recommend that you have a guide to show you around both the upper and lower levels as their information is second to none.

Strongly advice to take guided tour. Very old place - artificial caves, buried by Monks about 1000 years ago. Also it is the esoteric place.Place of strength

Oldest historical and religious spot in the city. You have to be where not late (before 16.00) to enter into the caves...The first cave temple and monastery founded by St. Anthony in 1069 !
Nice experience to explorer the deep underground system of caves full of spirits and magic...
