About Mabamba Shoebill Tours
Daily tours to the Mabamba Swamps to see the Shoebill. Tours leave daily at 07:30 or at your preferred time. The tour is by boat across the lake to Mabamba Swamps where we proceed by jumping into smaller canoes with guides to the get a view of the Shoebill, and many other birds. The boat tour across Lake Victory is magnificent with a great view of Entebbe, the Airport and more. On approaching the swamps you will pass through a fantastic lagoon with so many birds. Sometimes the Shoebill is found here rather than in the actual swamps. Assembly point is Reception Sunset Entebbe, or, you may be picked from your hotel in Entebbe. All participants must book in advance.

Superb boat trip culminating with excellent views of a single Shoebill. The boatmen proved to be exceptionally skilled, navigating through the swamp with ease. Additionally he positioned the boat brilliantly to give the best possible viewing and photographic opportunities. Thoroughly recommended.

The word of caution: this ugly bird, closest to prehistoric birds, is rare and nobody can guarantee you that you will one. But the tour (we took it with Sunset Tours) was an extraordinary event and we were fortunate to see a bird which curiously does not mind human company and "posed2 for us for half an hour. Incomparable experience, and you can also see many other aquatic birds, as well as the great eagle.

The guide we had as superb and knew the wildlife very well - where to find it and accurate factual information were paramount to our success.

Don't get me wrong the people we dealt with at Mabamba Shoebill Tours are great and we got exactly what we were promised. However, in my opinion, we significantly overpaid. We used the tour company as an experiment so that we could make sure to cut our costs and do it ourselves the next time. $150 is incredibly expensive considering that you can easily arrange this yourself by hiring an Uber ($25-$35 one way) or other transport and showing up at Mabamba Swamp Birdwatching (shows up in Google Maps) in the swamp and just hire a boat for two hours at the cost of 100,000USh or about $25 and then 50,000USh for each additional hour. If you are in fact a tourist and you don't mind spending the money, you want the experience of spending half of your time in a larger boat going across the lake (included in the time of your tour) rather than spending your time watching birds in the swamp, or you are just a little nervous about trying to manage this yourself then by all means Mabamba Shoebill Tours is the way to go. For those of you who don't mind a little #DoItYourselfAfricanAdventure then I would highly recommend cutting your costs, spending more time in the swamp, experiencing the drive through the villages, and ensuring that all your money goes to the swamp community by doing it yourself! The swamp is amazing, beautiful and full of life. The community dugout canoe guides are wonderful and they know their stuff. We saw two different Shoebills, a male and a female, and a ton of other birds. This is an incredible nature experience considering you are so close to bustling Kampala. Amazing photographic opportunities! We will absolutely be doing this again!
