- Vince HCambridge, United Kingdom23 contributionsGreat trip round Marmaris Castle/MuseumThe castle is very well restored and very interesting. The museum is part of the castle itself and has a wide selection of Amphorae and other artefacts. The views from the ramparts are beautiful and it was a very good experience. On the climb up to the castle there are a couple of really nice cafes. Try the Turkish coffee!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 23, 2023
- StretchingcatExeter, United Kingdom23 contributionsGreat views from this well maintained siteA beautiful site with stunning views around to the marina and out to sea. Informative displays and good selection of artefacts, jewellery, pots and amphorae. Toilet on site (free). Lovely planting within the castle too which made the whole thing even more scenic. Spent an enjoyable hour or so here. Note: We visited after reading about it in The Times where they got the pricing wildly wrong (as in,'this costs pennies')! Entrance fee was €6 each I think, which is probably fair as it is a well maintained historical/archaeological site.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 24, 2024
- CumbrianCamelLoverPenrith, United Kingdom285 contributionsHighly recommend visitingLovely well kept musuem. It took a while to find the entrance. We saw signposts to museum but thought that was separate to the castle, it wasn't! Once in, paying a small fee, we found a lovely small castle with pleasant garden and amazing views. The artefacts are well presented with just enough info to not get overwelming. Highly recommend.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 26, 2024

After The Knights of St. John were thrown out of the Kingdom of Jerusalem with the fall of Acre in 1291, they moved to the Kingdom of Cyprus, only to be thrown out again in 1305, homeless they laid siege for four years to the Island fortress of Rhodes. Making it their home in 1309, along with the surrounding tributaries, including the port of Marmaris, where they built a protective castle until it fell, along with Rhodes, to the Ottoman Empire in 1522.
Suleyman the Magnificent forces rebuilt the castle from scratch after its defeat to accommodate a larger garrison, at the same time, a small Ottoman caravanserai was built by Suleyman’s mother close by in the bazaar.
The safe harbour below the castle was used in 1798 by Britain's Admiral Nelson to assemble his fleet before setting sail for Egypt and the Battle of the Nile, which ended Napoleon's ambitions in the Mediterranean. In 1801 the British were back with 120 ships and 14,000 troops, this time to end the French campaign in Egypt and Syria.
In 1957 two earthquakes almost destroyed the city. Only the castle and the historic buildings surrounding it were left undamaged. So the Turkish Ministry of Culture started renovating the castle in 1979, converting it into a museum with seven galleries, the largest used as an exhibition hall. The courtyard is full of seasonal flowers.
TIP: As the castle commands a great view of the harbour below, its worth the walk over cobblestones for sunset photos.

Decided to do something different in Marmaris and wasn’t disappointed at all. The entrance fee was very cheap at around £2GBP it took around 1hr to get around but could have spent longer depending on your interests. Lovely well kept castle with indoor museum areas and lovely views from the top. Well worth the money and walk. Some gorgeous little streets close by for pictures. And don’t miss the small family run cafe/bar very close by offering the highest viewpoint in Marmaris.

Had a very enjoyable visit to the castle and surrounding area. Entry cost £2.50 and is well worth it. Amazing views of surrounding landscape and the museum had lots of interesting artefacts, particularly the glass, jewellery and carvings, the quality of which I've not seen in other museums. Lovely walk up through the small winding streets. Followed it up with a stroll through the bazaar. Lots of restaurants around. Toilets at the castle. Steps in the castle to the various museum rooms will be an issue for the less able.

The only notable tourist attraction in Marmaris. Not very impressive either. Built in 1522, beautifully renovated.
It also houses a so-called archeological museum. Nothing spectacular: pottery, remains of statues, remains of columns, tombstones, ornaments, arranged in three small rooms.
Open daily 10: 00-19: 30, 27TL ticket.
An additional reason to visit it is the fact that it offers a nice panoramic view of the marina and the old town.

Have visited Marmaris many times but first time visiting the castle and museum, the location is signposted and once found those it’s easy to find.
There is no shop or cafe at the castle, pushchairs have to be left at the entrance and very strict rules on no food or drink even in the heat!!!!!
It was 40 lire for adults and the. Nils was free, we spent a while walking around and it’s great for some lovely pictures and views. The little rooms of artefacts etc was interesting and air con in them was a relief!
There are toilets available and benches to sit on.
Staff and security guard bit over friendly but otherwise a nice thing to do in Marmaris.

Visited the castle and was really surprised at how artifacts where displayed. The views are also totally amazing and there are lots of little souvenir shops on the way. Open 7 days a week and currently 8tl entry per person.

This is a beautiful castle to visit, it is nestled in the old town in Marmaris, so the journey up the hill through the quaint old town is worth the visit itself. Lots of small winding lanes and lovely quaint restaurants, I went midday but I imagine it is a really special place in the evening. The castle itself was a real treasure, it had the right amount of historical context and artefacts without overkill, you can walk anywhere including all the turrets, it is steep in places but the views are worth it, as the castle is intact you get a real sense of how important it was in its day, the history adds context and the museum pieces are all around the open space and not just behind glass in a museum environment, for 100 lira I thought it was a great place to spend a couple of hours and enjoyed my visit immensely, worth checking out if you have an interest in history
