A shuttle took us for free to Konak Square, a ten-minute drive from the cruise port. A pleasant place to walk about and admire the statues. An aggresive vendor thrust plastic containers with juice at us, then demanded ten euro for each. We gave him ten euro and told him to go away. We walked back to the ship. Very interesting.

Konak Square in the center of Izmir, Turkey. The Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père designed the Izmir Clock Tower. It was built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamid II's accession to the throne. The sultan actually celebrated his 25th anniversary by having more than 100 clock towers built in public squares throughout the Ottoman Empire.

I had an hour to spare today and wondered through Konak Square after catching the metro there. I walked through the park and past the water features till I came to the old Konak Cami, which must be one of the smallest mosques in existence. It is like a small rare precious building for prayer and spirituality. Behind it on the square is visible the Saat Kulesi from the late Ottoman Empire, at the moment it must be undergoing cleaning and maintenance as it had boards surrounding it’s base.
This is a lovely square to visit when you have a spare 30 minutes in Izmir.

It is considered the main landmark of Izmir- I guess I can undersand it, but I don't fully agree. It is so large that the Clock Tower and the mosque seem both insignificant and disproportionate in size. Not impressed.

Konak square is one of most important squares of the city of Izmir, situated close to the sea and Kemeralti market. In the surrounding area you can find a lot of cafes, restaurants and shops. On the square you can admire Saat Kulesi (the really picturesque Clock Tower) and a very nice small mosque. If you are in Izmir, this is a place to visit!

Make sure you walk to Konak Pier when you are here. The main structure was designed by Gustav Eiffel (I hope I spelled that right). Since it is covered, go inside and you can see the steel architecture. A number of shops are there and many nice restaurants.

Konak Square with its beautiful, yet small Clock tower in the middle is the very central spot of Izmir.
At one side of it is the Kemaralti bazaar, while on the other is the Kordonbeyu sea side promenade. It's a must see for every visitor, and a local's meeting place.

For a tourist, this square hasn't the same importance as for the locals. However, it is a place where a tourist can experience the local 'atmosphere'. It is a lively place, which offers a wonderful view of the sea.
