The Citadel is in pretty poor condition but it is only a short walk from the other main attractions of Erzurum.
It was all closed up and you could not get inside (I walked all the way around) but you get some nice views of the area from the Citadel (obviously it is high but not a real slog).
The area is being 'redeveloped', i.e. it is a tip at the moment, but if they do it well then this could be really nice.

A must if you are in town. There is not much information not a lot to see. But the views over the town and the surroundings are nice.

As my title says, the view . . . that is all. The buildings aren't terribly impressive, but the views . . . sweeping views, atop the city, breezy and well just lovely. The walls of the citadel, circa 1000 BC still stand, the mosque on the inside (9th c I think), and just the general atmosphere of the place give you the sense that you have walked into a void. Not a bad void, but a void. It is almost as if you are expecting to eat mashed potatoes and gravy and only get the potatoes . . .you are left with a dry palate and wanting more.

The views though. Always a win, win.

It is a fine, but not very big or very interesting, citadel. I didn't enter inside, perhaps there's something interesting inside, but I wouldn't expect that.

There doing this joint up as of (August 2018) so it's a sight with workers working, covered in scaffolding & no entrance into the citadel. As the other posts say though it's a short stroll to the other sights in town so if your reading this close to me posting date you'll see it on the way to the other sights, just don't make the effort to go in. Unless of course watching histororical restoration is your go or you have children with you, who want a bit of a play in a playground. In that case then grab a patch of grass near the playground out front and go hard.

The building itself is not particularly impressive, but the view from inside is impressive expecially in the late afternoon.

According to a panel struck on the walls of the citadel, the remaining structure is what remains of the inner walls. The outer walls that dont exist anymore once contained much of the city. The panel states that the citadel remains from around 1000 BC.
Inside the walls is the basic remains of a mosque from the 9th century AD, and the interesting clock tower/minaret to which one can climb to see the spectacular view of the city and the imposing mountains surrounding the city.
The courtyard is still being dug by archaeologists.

Not any innovative applications available. Just stands on top of a city.

Although not much remains within the walls besides a plain medieval military mini-mosque, the 12th C minaret is an important monument to the Saltukid dynasty, and worth climbing also for the superb view it affords over the city and surrounding landscape.
