Set some time aside for this one
Apr 2021
I thought Zelve Open Air Museum would be more of the same from the Göreme Open Air Museum. It is not. At all. This one is a thorough hike, more than anywhere else I went in Cappadocia, and it's worth it. Just set some time aside, as I wound up running out of time and had to miss part of it.

Good for an hour
Apr 2021
This is great. A lot is roped off so to COVID but you can still walk through and take some pictures and enjoy the views. It helps to have a guide to explain how the caves here were used. It takes no more than an hour here, it’s not too big but was a great walk about

Zelve, which is 5 km from Avanos and 1 km from Paşabağları, was established on the steep and northern slopes of Aktepe. Zelve Ruins, which consists of three valleys, is the most intense place of fairy chimneys.

Zelve open air museum (zelve valley)
Cappadocia is famous for its fairy chimneys, churches and balloon flights.zelve open-air museum, which contains the most fairy chimneys and houses the churches where the first Christian education began. the zelve open-air museum consists of 3 Valleys. it is believed that the Christian activities in the zelve Valley, which is connected to the Avanos District of Nevsehir province, began in the AD 4th century.in some sources, it is said that a religious ceremony was held in the temple of zeus of the people in the AD 4th century Avanos district. It is known that life lasted here until the 1950s, but then due to erosion and natural causes, people left the place and settled in the nearby village. the most important structure that stands out in the first Valley is the mosque ,which is carved out of rocks, built with cut stone and has a minaret that attracts attention with its different architectural structure. mosque with rectangular plan; single section and covered with barrel vault .outside the mosque, the village square, houses carved into the rock and dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) can be seen. the local motifs on the top of the pigeons are also a good example of the local motifs of the region.fertilizers derived from dovecotes are known to be used for agriculture. the largest structure in this valley is a large monastic structure, the dome of which is carved from a large stone. 4 floors of the monastery, katholikon (main church), it has functions such as trapeza (refectory), Monk's cell, grave, dormitory, warehouse it is thought to consist of spaces. in the first Valley there is also an yazılı church and geyikli church..
the Church of the Holy Cross is located in 2 valleys of the zelve open-air museum. the church was built with a rectangular plan and a barrel vault. there are no frescoes inside the church.there are latin cross and zigzag motifs made with red root paint.
in the 3 Valleys of the open-air museum is the fish(balıklı) and grape(üzümlü) church and the wheat mill(seten). Seten is vertical, rotated with animal or water, used to remove bran grain means set millstone. Seten (mill), located in the Valley It is north of the rock mass where Üzümlü Church is located .Valley people as a power source in setende, which is used as a common to meet the need for bulgur(pounded wheat) animal power was used. balıklı and üzümlü churches were built side by side on a high rock. the rock block in which the churches are located has 3 floors.2 churches and chapels are located on the first floor.2 floors contain church windows and a single worship cell.
Frescoes and motifs of the churches are available.some of these...depictions of the Latin cross made by scraping technique, depictions of Mary and Child Jesus on the throne, Helena and Constantine, Archangels Michael and Gabriel carrying the Maltese cross, fish motifs , Saint Stephanos,Saint Joseph, depiction of the Maltese cross, medallions, khristograms are included.

So interesting!
Nov 2020 • Couples
Several of the areas were roped off and inaccessible, but this was a fascinating group of dwellings to walk around. Several well-maintained paths and informational plaques. A neat place to stop and see!

A picturesque valley to walk
Sep 2020
Zelve 'outdoor museum', a walk I found as good as Pasabag ( Fairy Chinmeys ) and perhaps even more picturesque. Part quite steep and sometimes over uneven ground but not at all difficult.

Fantastic

A must-see if you're ever in the beautiful, unique part of the world. The museum shop also has some nice merchandise, as does the pottery stand outside. Be aware that sunshine is strong and direct in this part of the world, so always keep a sun hat nearby.

Disappointed
Jan 2020
54 tl badly spent. The paintings were really deteriorated and you had to pay extra to acess to a cave where the paintings were in better shape. Not worth the money.

Great Landscape
Nov 2019
We visited Goreme and Zelve and loved this one more MOSTLY because it had beautiful landscape. Also, I think more people visit Goreme Museum so there were fewer tourists on this site.

Buy the museum pass and you will save lots.
