One of the top attractions in the region, this outdoor museum contains the remains of many churches carved into the famous Cappadocia stone. Of note are the many excellent frescoes that can be seen when exploring the various structures.

Wonderful heritage site. Medium to high level fitness to reach some places. Extra charge for cathedral views (annoying to pay again inside). Lovely gift shop. Could spend half a day wondering in & out of caves.
We were advised to miss this as it would be crowded. Instead we went straight there after breakfast and therefore managed to missed all the guided tours which seem to start at 9:30. The museum opens at 8am so there is plenty of time to...More
Karanlık Kilise (Dark Church) - the main attraction in the Göreme Open Air Museum is closed for the restoration (a guard said "for 6 months"). There is no information about this on website or on entry to the site. Even more - if you buy...More
We were on the Red Tour for 28 euros per person. This was our 2nd stop. Entrance for 45 tl was included in our tour price. When we came late morning, it was already super crowded with tour groups.

Maybe this place is a good deal to people without a car because there are a lot of places like this and better near Goreme by car.

Very interesting to explore. We went on the Red Tour, and I think we are not there long enough to see it all...it was a bit rushed. I advise you to go by yourself if you really want to see it all and take your...More
This place was so unexpectedly spectacular and I'm so glad we visited this outdoor museum. It was so interesting to see how Christians used to live in the caves. Some of the frescoes are very well preserved on the walls.

Walking is not terribly difficult you might want to consider a hiking stick just for added stability if you or a fellow traveler is not surefooted. A car is a plus and will make you much more flexible. Honestly sidewalks and streets in most cities are more difficult to navigate. We live in Turkey and feel very safe especially a place like Goreme. Keep in mind that on Easter is the referendum vote which is a day to stay close to home and avoid crowds. Also if you get a guide in Goerme you end up at the carpet factory and an hour long sales pitch and at the pottery factory and a sales pitch it is better to get some good guide books and do it on your own. We stayed in the Nostalgia cave hotel and were very happy. A recent traveler booked a hotel and was shuffled to a different hotel due on construction in the booked hotel- don't let them pull that trick on you unless you view the new room first and agree to staying there.
