If you stop on the ridge on the road connecting Goreme and Uchisar there is a fabulous view over a fairy landscape dotted with buildings in the valleys. The village of Goreme lies 3km to the north east, and the triangular pinnacle of Uchisar castle is south west. Volcanic eruptions 3 to 9 million years ago from nearby Erciyes Dağı (Mt. Erciyes) and Hasan Dağı (Mt. Hasan) deposited layers of basalt and thick beds of tuff (volcanic ash solidified into a soft rock). Since then, erosion has carved the area into a spectacular landscape of erosional forms. In places where the soft tuff is overlain by a hard lava cap there are rock towers, pillars, tent rocks and fairy chimneys standing above the gently rolling hills. Early settlers carved the soft tuff into dwellings, stables, storehouses, and places of worship, some of which are still in use (you can eat in a nearby rock-cut restaurant and stay in a nearby rock-cut hotel). These fantastic geologic forms are best seen at sunrise and sunset, when the grey ash is lit up by the peachy-golden light. On calm mornings, you may see dozens of hot air balloons floating above the landscape at dawn. This panoramic road stop is available at all times, with no entry fee.

I was lucky to visit while it was snowing and I got excellent breath taking views of whole Goreme. You can even see the Uchisar Castle, which is a treat. There are no boundaries so you have to be careful while taking pictures to avoid selfie death. The vendors were selling quite a lot of souvenirs, etc and they were very reasonably priced, buy from them. Take endless photos as the views cannot be found elsewhere.

Several café’s by the side of the road. The first few on the right as you go down the hill didn’t seem to have as good a panoramic views of Goreme as slightly further down. You can walk along the ridge and pick your seat in any café for a cheap drink and a marvellous view.

This view and cappadocia in general, is very unique. I enjoyed a lot the trekkings I did. As this is a very touristic and commercial place, is better to avoid tours

After seeing views from Uçhisar castle, pigeon valley, fairy chimneys, 3 beauties etc the views start to look very similar. Göreme panorama is just another nice view point.
