We visited Borj El Kebir last July (2012) as we just fancied a few hours out of the hotel. We went by taxi from the hotel and he dropped us just outside the fort. He mentioned that if we walked down the road opposite the Fort we would see the market and then reach the main town with shops etc. My son enjoyed Borj El Kebir as you had lots of space to explore he thought he was Indiana Jones. There isn’t much to see as it’s really just stone and the museum is very small but it was a nice couple of hours. We walked around the outside of the fort and saw an open theatre and a man trying to fish. The walk down through the market was an experience. We went in July as was extremely hot as there was no wind so just remember to take plenty of suncream and water. If you are not very mobile then I would give this a miss as there are a few stairs and uneven walk areas.

Not too spectaular, but as u r already in Houmt Souk and have half an hour to spare, a quick visit us worth while and 7TND entry doesn't cost an arm and a leg, so y not!

If you have been elsewhere in Tunisia, you have probably seen better attractions. But anyway the view to the sea is nice so if you have nothing else to do, it's not too bad a place for a short visit. At least they have some boards telling about the history downstairs, which is often lacking in Tunisia.

I visited the Borj El Kebir fortress in combination with a visit to the city of Houmt Souk, as :it is is just a ten minute foot walk from the central market. It is a nice historical site, I am not a history fanatic, but the tables gave me a good and interesting overview over the local history (bring some knowledge of French or Arabic language to understand the texts). I roamed through the old walls, had some nice view over the city and the nearby fishers habor.
Entry is 7 TND (+1 TND if you want to take pictures inside) only, so it's not too expensive and worth a visit!
