Poor Imitation
Jun 2017 • Friends
This week I am playing host and tour guide to friends from Australia and they said they wanted to see Ko Kloi Floating Market.

Ko Kloi is a poor imitation of a Thai floating market, very few of which exist now. But I took them anyway.

We did a quick walk around the boardwalks, looked at the fish in the ponds, and left without buying anything.

My friends ended up agreeing with me that it was a bit of a tourist trap.

Not that bad

It is located next to central Rayong.
I went to the market at night. Many shops closed but there were a vintage restaurants available for dinning. It was nice to visit there.

Fake, dont go there

It's literally nothing. Don't go there. Even the location in here is not correct. When you go to that location you end up in some sandbox

A Pleasant Surprise!
Jan 2016 • Couples
This market gets a poor review in that it is not a floating market! This is true... it is more like shops surrounding a large pond. However, that is no reason to avoid the Ko Koi Market. We found items here that were not found in other markets. In addition, items that we had purchased at other markets were cheaper at Ko Kloi. We were pleased with what we found. Admittedly, we knew not to expect a REAL floating market, bu the shops, food, and antiques (on display) were enough to make this a part of our itinerary. Tip: We spent about 2 hours going through the shops and taking some pics. Allow at least 90 minutes.

Not really floating market
Dec 2015 • Friends
The owners of this place just digging a pond and building the place for all those small shops which surrounding by the water.

The products that selling here you could just find from anywhere in Thailand in 2-3 times cheaper on price.

It's the same concept as the Pattaya floating market (ตลาดน้ำ4ภาค)

Fake as Fake can Be

Floating markets date back hundreds of years to an age when Siam (as Thailand was then called) had extensive networks of canals and were a major thoroughfare for trade and commerce. As towns and cities spread, canals were filled in and replaced by roads and highways, which became the new mode of transporting goods to market.

In the olden days, farmers and cottage industries would load up their small wooden boats with their produce and goods and paddle them to the local congregation area, which became known as "floating markets", which normally operated from very early in the morning until midday, or until the merchants had sold their produce.

There are almost no authentic floating markets left in Thailand today, but that hasn't stopped the tourist industry from trying to re-create the mystic of a long-bygone era by dredging fake canals and setting up a "floating market" in a Disney-type theme park.

One of the worst of the worst has to be the Koh Kloi Floating Market in Rayong. It claims to recreate the ambience and atmosphere of the old floating markets, but is a sterile, barren joke being played on unsuspecting tourists.

Floating markets have hundreds of years of history behind them. It is therefore with a sense of irony that I suspect the owners of this pathetic development put "Since 2010" in bold headlines above the gateway entrance to Koh Kloi Floating Market.

Give it a miss: You have better things to do with your time when you visit Rayong.
