On the Tourist Itinerary
Mar 2019 • Friends
I shop for fresh fruit and vegetables, and meat and fish at Star Fresh Market at least three times a week.

But I also include it in the itinerary when I am entertaining guests from overseas, which is often.

This week my cousin, Amanda, is visiting me from Jersey and on day one we hit the market to buy the ingredients for a Thai dinner I intended to cook for her that night.

Apart from the sheer diversity of the produce available, Amanda could not get over how cheap everything was compared to United Kingdom prices.

Volcanically Hot
Sep 2018 • Solo
Chilis originated in South America and it was not until after the Great Colombian Exchange that they, along with tomatoes, potatoes, corn, pineapples, avocados, and tobacco, became popular in the west.

Nowhere has embraced them more than Thailand, and they are to be found in its cuisine throughout the country.

I am off to Jersey later this week and my cousin asked me to take her some Thai chilis. I think she must have an asbestos lined throat and intestinal tract, because she eats them like candy.

Anyway, off to Star Freshy Market I went to fill the order.

There are so many varieties to choose from, but as a general rule of thumb, the smaller the chili, the more it packs a punch. This is not always so, because one the of the medium size orange-yellow chilis, is one of the hottest I have ever tasted.

I went to my usual vegetable stall and the young lady was happy to help me choose a selection of three different chili types.

I ended up with 2 kg of assorted chilis, for the ridiculously low price of THB 80 .

In the United Kingdom my cousin tells me she is paying that much for just 100 grams.

Good Butchers
Feb 2018 • Solo
There are pros and cons to buying meat at Star Fresh Market.

On the downside, meat there is not always the cheapest, because supermarket chains can afford to buy in bulk and discount.

But on the upside, the supermarkets' butchery departments offer meat that is already cut and in many cases pre-packaged, so you have no options if you want a different cut.

For example, Thai's like pork ribs cut into 4 or 5 cm lengths. I like to buy the whole ribs, which I then marinade and barbecue. So I buy them, the whole rib side at a time, from Star Fresh Market.

Also the supermarkets do not offer many options, other than frozen products, when it comes to beef. I have now found a beef butcher at Star Fresh Market who I can rely upon to sell me a tender piece of beef for roasting, instead of the usual beef sold in Thailand that is as tough as old boot leather.

And the prices really are cheap. Pork loin in Australia costs between $20 to $30. At Star Fresh Market I can buy it for the equivalent of $6 - $7.

Final Adventure for Aussie Friends
Jul 2017 • Friends
I have been hosting friends from Australia for the past two weeks and they leave tomorrow. I had overlooked taking them to Star Fresh Market, the largest Thai-style market in Rayong.

Their jaws dropped when they saw the extent of the fruit and vegetables on display at the many stalls in the market. I was put to the test trying to explain to them what some of the unfamiliar fruits and vegetables where, including the fact that in Thailand there are many different types of garlic, basil and ginger, and each has its own specific use in cooking.

They were also amazed at how cheap some of the meat was. For example, a tenderloin of pork in Australia will set you back something like $25 a kilo. Here you can buy it for the equivalent of $6 a kilo.

Any Fresher and it would be Swimming

Short of catching it yourself, the best place to buy fresh fish and seafood in Rayong in Star Fresh Market, in the center of town.

There is a cluster of stalls in the middle of the market which have fresh fish and seafood every day, on display on mounds of crushed ice. The fish is always fresh, but check the brightness of the eyes and the pinkness of the gills as a sure sign that it is fresh.

The choice varies from day to day, but there is always sea bass, which is commercially farm grown in Thailand. You will also find at various times coral trout, coral cod, Spanish Mackerel, Bonito, various types of catfish, barracuda, pomfret, golden and silver bream, shark and many other types of fish whose names I do not know.

Fish here is normally sold whole, but some stalls have cutlets or fillets, particularly if it is from a large fish.

The stall holders will happily scale, gut and clean your purchase for you, including filleting or boning it if you wish.

There is also a wide selection of various types and sizes of prawns, again mostly farmed.

Also look out for mussels, oysters, cockles, clams crabs and shovel-tailed lobsters. Some stalls sell shelled crab meat and shelled Pacific oysters in bags.

Stunning Variety
Nov 2016 • Friends
Even though I have lived in Rayong for eight years and shop at Star Market several times a week, I am still amazed at the huge variety of produce on sale.

In the meat section there is not only chicken, duck, pork, beef, fish and seafood, but exotic items like live eels, frogs and sometimes turtles. I always hasten away when I see the live turtles, wondering how they are going to end up.

The vegetables section carries so many different exotic and tropical vegetables, herbs and spices, that I am still learning their names and use.

And the fruit section is a blaze of colour with every known fruit available in season.
Other sections sell a flower, including bunches of colourful Thai orchids, and dry goods, such as eggs, rice, dried salted fish and squid, and Asian sauces and condiments.

Even if you are not buying, Star Market is well worth a visit to experience a first class example of a living Asian market, with housewives going about the business of daily shopping for their families.

Nearby my apartment

This market is really close to my apartment. It is quite clean. The price is mostly kinda higher than some other market. It sells fruit, vegetables, and there are some food stalls inside.

Overpriced market of average quality
May 2016
We wilk not return, after 2 visits. We found it mediocre, overpriced and presumptious (as in snotty vendors riding presumed excellence of years past). There are better, numerius markets around Rayong, just ask the locals or search online.
