We booked the Magica a week before arriving in Phuket. It was our first time in Thailand, and I was worried that I'd waited too long. Bernd (Captain Gundel) was very accommodating, and we were able to arrange a chartered day trip via email. I wasn't sure what to expect, as the price seemed too good to be true compared to a lot of others. We met Bernd at a bar the night before to confirm everything, and ended up drinking with him and his friends for quite a while. They're a fun, fascinating group of ex-pats, and everything you'd hope to find at a beach bar in a quiet corner of Phuket. Our day was great. Bernd's friend Guenther was in town from Corsica, where he runs a dive boat all year. They were able to take my wife and I diving at a couple of nice reefs, and give our two friends a starter course in scuba. We fished along the way, got to see some great visuals of the Phuket coast, and got regaled with a lot of great stories along the way (they used to drive cars from Berlin to sell in Iraq and Afghanistan back in the 60s - hell of a road trip). Bernd has sailed all over the world, and is a fascinating guy to talk to. Lunch was fantastic, as others have noted. After the trip, we hit the bar again. They're a lot of fun to hang out with. We even ended up hanging out with Guenther most of the next day and having coffee with him and his fiance at their home. In short, it was a great day on a boat at a great price, but the genuine hospitality and friendship that you get from the crew is more than you could hope for. We won't forget our time in Phuket, and have the Magica to thank for a large part of that.

We did not have too high hopes after having searched the net high and low for a good boat not ridiculous expensive. Through the web we found "The Magica". Unfortunately I did not get a chance to speak to the captain before we met. As a consequence he was not sure what we wanted, fishing? Snorkelling? What kind of fish we were seeking, our experience etc. We are experienced cod and mackerel fishers, but sailfish?? The weather was a little rough with waves closer to 2 meters, which is not ideal. Rain was also in the air. We were met by a fantastic captain and crew. You will probably not find a captain with more sailing experience than this man, having sailed the whole world including crossing the 2 Capes by sail. After some trolling we got a few small tunas, about 2 kilos each. Good food, but the size was nothing to write home about. The lunch was made by the sweetest crew member ever. She had been early up buying fresh ingredients for lunch. The result was the best "Tom Kha" I have had, was prepared on the yacht. A chicken dish was also prepared equally good as well as Tuna Sashimi. After a small swim we went real "fishing". 40 minutes later we saw one fish speeding through the waves in an incredible speed after one of our lures. We would have been ok just with this, but our excitement grew of course. A good 15 mins later the first one hit the "lure", but we lost it. A few mins thereafter 2 sailfish hit the bait and one was reeled in. Mine was lost in the commotion. The "dingy" hanging after the yacht made it impossible to reel this one in. Finally one beautiful specimen of a sailfish was landed. It measured 186 cms and weighing about 30 kilos. It was, as mentioned, windy and the lures got way too often tangled, we hooked 3 sailfish at the same time, what a mess. A total of 7-9 sailfish were were hooked, but we did not land more fish. This was for sure our own doing, based on our inexperience with this kind of "sea monsters". Neither the captain, nor the crew members were at fault. Finally the crew took us to a wonderful street restaurant named "The Museum" and prepared a great dinner based on our catch. Fantastic day, I am coming back for sure. Thank you Captain Bernd Gundel for an unforgettable day. Arne Faaberg

Captain Gundel and his crew made our day aboard the Magica a wonderful experience. The beautiful Magica is super clean and the interior dining table made our freshly cooked Thai lunch really enjoyable. The boat was well provisioned for the day with plenty of water, soft drinks, beer, and fresh fruit. The price was super competitive, and Captain Gundel worked with us to provide the best possible itinerary for my family. Our 5-year-old really enjoyed the experience, especially sitting upstairs and asking lots and lots of questions! I would without a doubt recommend a day out on the Magica.
