About
Celebrated over 9 days in October, this Chinese festival dictates a strict vegetarian diet and period of abstinence whilst locals pray to the Nine Emperor Gods. Dressed in white, it is a time for the purification of both body and mind, and a time to display impressive feats to the Gods. These include severe body mutilation acts - by way of facial piercings using knives and swords - and group fire walking. Large parades of people dressed in white roam the streets, with some members taking a shamen trance state, dancing and performing in front of the gathered crowds. All the while, there is a wonderful selection of vegetarian food on offer, making this a real treat for non meat eaters!

Phuket, Great place to celebrate vegetarian festival in Thailand.
Oct 2019
This is the fifth year I have been celebrating Phuket's Vegetarian Festival.

The people of Phuket celebrate the local festival which takes place each year in October for ten days. There are many Chinese temples located in the city which is home to many Thai Chinese people. These temples celebrate festive rituals and tradition from years. Both young and old are seen wearing white clothes during the festive period and eating vegetarian food throughout the ten days. The temples are filled with visitors all day long who come to worship the gods. Many people take off from work and businesses during this time to celebrate the festival.

There are a couple of walking streets that are jam packed with people all day long serving some very delicious Thai vegetarian food at cheap prices. The variety in food is unbelievable and delicious to eat, sometimes a little too oily and fattening.

The processions organised by the various temples during the festival days is amazing with both young and old walking on streets with body aching piercings and display of faith in god. Fire crackers and light shows are amazing and very interesting for people to watch.

I highly recommend visiting Phuket if you like vegetarian food and like to take part in the festival.

Culture, culture, culture!

We were lucky enough to be in Phuket at the time of this year’s Vegetarian Festival. We attended one of the early morning parade events and found it simply amazing. There was lots of interesting experiences for all of the senses. If you have the opportunity to attend, you won’t be disappointed by the special cultural experience.

If ever any vegetarians/vegans are in Phuket at this time of year, the vegetarian festival is a must to go to as one gets to eat street food we otherwise wouldn’t and at really cheap prices too.
We went for 3 nights and dinner on average cost 200 baht...we did eat while exploring the stalls and tried many many different things

Cool mall
Oct 2018 • Friends
This mall is a massive collection spanning both sides of the road and is extremely clean and comfortable. There are lots of sit down restaurants and a full supermarket. Also has a multi screen cinema with a VIP theater. The normal range of stores also. It is very welcoming and friendly to locals and foreigners.

The biggest vegetarian festival in Thailand
Oct 2016 • Couples
This is the biggest vegetarian festival in Thailand. You cannot find normal food but vegetarian in town unless you get into food court in shopping malls.

Don't forget your mask!

My partner and I watched the final night parade from the safety of a bar. Basically, people dressed in white carry small floats and everyone tries to get their firecrackers into the floats. It was insane and one of the highlights of Phuket. Be warned that the air is thick with smoke so most people wear masks. Some kind locals also gave us some cotton wool for our ears. We got there early and parked ourselves in a bar with a good vantage point (right on the roundabout) which I would recommend.

A bit too much people.
Oct 2016 • Couples
A great festivity for sure, a bit to much people tho. The food is great, a lot of different kinds of food made vegetarian just for the occasion. The week ends with people shooting fireworks all over the inner parts of town, that was as close I'll ever get to a war zone (hopefully).

Dramatic & Engaging

I accidentally encountered the Vegetarian Festival when I was in downtown Phuket, not having known about it before hand. It was quite the experience seeing all the people in white with a huge line of floats coming by. A big part of the tradition is setting off multitudes of firecrackers, to the degree that the roads are red with the leftovers. The noise and smoke were intense, with devotees carrying floats on bamboo poles, and firecrackers exploding right by their heads, raining down hot debris on them. Attendants were waving shirts at the persons carrying the floats to keep them from setting getting burned (though I did wonder how the explosions must have affected their hearing). Other men paraded by with blood stained chests from what appeared to have been self-inflicted wounds. Others were decked out in whimsical costumes. While I did not understand the significance of all these events, is was an exciting experience to observe them.

Vegetarian festival in Phuket
Oct 2016
Must come and see. A great vegetarian festival in Thailand. Most or nearly all of local people avoid from eating all meats, preying for peaceful, healthy and happy. There are a lot of activities during 10 days of vegetarian festival that you may not see from somewhere else in the world even China which this event was from.

If you have an opportunity to join this festival, please do it at least 3 days as vegetarian.Your mind and healthy will be better. If you can do 10 days vegetarian, it is great. It is a way of detoxification.
