We stumbled on this by accident just cruising around. There ere no signs that I saw. Saw no Farangs, only locals.
Some of the animals seemed to be doing well. The bears were stressed in the hot sun, and it was hot. There was no shade for them like some of the other animals had. The ones in their cages seemed to be doing even worse. There were deer of different kinds but they were on the woods and shady. Just didn't seem like the care taker(s) knew what they were doing.Too bad

Not nice.

If you want to see happy, healthy and free animals this isn't the place. If you have any shred of decency you will walk out feeling like you've visited a prison for innocent creatures. Best avoided in my opinion

Up close & personal with the Bears & Monkeys
Mar 2016 • Couples
Take along some bananas & spend some time seeing the animals with only a small fence between you.
There were lots of bears in two big paddocks but there were also some in small cages which was sad.

The gibbons were very sweet & enjoyed the attention. Yes it's not a wonderfully kept zoo but it's free & the animals were all fat & happy enough. No zoo can be perfect but this one has a lot of potential.

Not a 'happy' zoo

This place is very sad. The animals are enclosed in cages too small for their size and I noticed the monkeys were afraid of their handler. This zoo broke my heart.

The visit started quite well when we saw the black sun bears seemingly relaxing at ease in the green enclosures, then we saw some cages, then some closed cages, then locked up gibbons in cages, then macaques in small dirty cages, mountain goats on flat ground... And it went on.Throughout, we didn't see a zoo employee nor water dishes in the enclosures. We felt very uncomfortable and left shortly after.

what a waste of opportunity

Mae Hongson has been our preferred holiday destination for years yet it was only yesterdat that I found out that a zoo exists in the town's vicinity. A few kilometers to the north, just before the gas station at Baan Bang Moo there's a right turn up to the "Mae Surin National Park" where the zoo is located. Haven't noticed any sign pointing it out, so probably best is to ask at the gas station.
The zoo itself is placed in a nice forest but the cages the animals are kept in are really abysmal. Way too small, filthy, hardly any shade, if at all. The animals seem listless and generally hungry.
The whole place left a sad impression. Nearby is a little reservoir. Nice to look at but again wastefully neglected. What an opportunity for a short hike that would be! We walked around the lake through undergrowth and thorny plants. There are some dilapidated salas (little huts to sit and rest) along the way which shows there once was at least an idea to use this lovely area for recreation and exploration

Nice area for a walk to visit and see wild animals

It is about 7 kilometers from Mae Hong Son town center. Take the road to Pai and at Km7. turn right into Nam Tok Mae Surin national park headquarter. Then Mae Hong Son zoo is on your right hand. Here you will enjoy many different kind of wild animals found in Mae Hong Son area. Great wild bears, gibbons, monkeys and more.

Avoid this place at all costs and spend your time trying to get it shut down and the animals rehoused in to better conditions.
