It was beautiful at night especially the ocean view and I went at the day time as well. It felt so good with sun shine and gave me a difference feeling of the ocean near by. It was busy with people out of town. However it was not crazy like Ao Nang in which too many tourists around the World. Anyone can get a cheap hotel to stay at Krabi Town and tour Pi Pi island the next day with a guide/ boat without paying so much money for a hotel stay.

Krabi town has many sculptures. You can find the apes at the traffic lights, elephants on the street lamps, fish eagles carved from wood on street lamps and on the promenade near the pier. The giant crab is made from bronze (I think) there is one large one with smaller ones around it. It symbolizes the local black crab that lives in the local mangrove forest.
Nice for photo opportunities and frequented by tourists. It is nearby the main departure pier.

Krabi Town has produced something different from the normal in placing sculptures of animals and ape men which are symbolic of the area rather than statues of people. There are at least four different sculptures in the town some are placed on the tops of the traffic signals while there is a giant crap with young and a white breasted sea eagle near the riverside park located on Uttarakit Road. The crab and young stand for the fertility of the adjacent mangrove forests while the eagle symbolizes strength, knowledge and nurturing of others The Elephants represent the Thai way of life as these animals have played a big part in the country's history and struggles. The Ape men are representative of the history of Krabi as one of Thailand's oldest prehistoric sites dating back some 30000 years. Many skeletons and cave drawings have been found in the caves of the area dating back to prehistoric times.
The white breasted eagle based on Uttarakit Road is also marked as 0 km and is apparently the reference point for distances in the province which are all made from here.

The metal crab is a landmark structure at the waterfront area along Krabi River. I went to Tiger Caves Temple in the morning from Ao Nang and after visiting the Tiger Caves Temple, I flagged down a songthaew along the main road opposite Big C Supermarket towards Krabi Town. Krabi Town is more than 25 km from Ao Nang but is only about 4 km from Krabi Town. It costs me 20 bahts to take the songthaew from the main road outside the Tiger Caves Temple to Krabi Town.

However, I was not sure where was the best place to alight at Krabi Town. Luckily, I showed a hand sign of a crab to a local lady sitting inside the same songthaew as me and she alerted me when I was near the waterfront and I saw this amazing structure of the gigantic crab beside the Krabi River. You see two huge limestone karts at the background at the mouth of the Krabi River not far from the waterfront.

The Krabi River reminds me of the milk tea color River Rejang of Sarawak. There were mangrove swamps along the river and few longtail boats berth along the Chao Fah Pier of the waterfront. There was a row of shophouses, hotels and restaurants opposite the waterfront. The waterfront reminded me of Kuching but Kuching's waterfront seem wider and better constructed. I had my lunch of Stewed Pork rice (our version of Char Siew Rice) at a coffee shop opposite the waterfront. The coffee shop was crowded and was very clean. The plate of rice was cheap and cost only 40 bahts. I hardly came across such clean and hygienic coffee shop in Krabi.

It took me about an hour or two to walk round Krabi town, visited a temple, the local market, a department store before I took a songthaew at the car park outside Vogue department store back to Ao Nang. You can spend about half a day to wander around this town and relax yourself.

Visited these sculptures located by the river for half an hour. There are two sculptures, crab and sea eagles. The location is next to the Chao Fah Pier where it is the pier to take the boat to visit mangrove forest and Khao Khanap Nam.

Mangrove forest is famous for fishing and catching crab activities. You can sit at the waterfront near to the sculptures for "river breeze", just to kill time while waiting for your boat to arrive.

When the river water receded, grab the chances to see crab with only left side propodus, crawling on the mud. I took some videos on how the crab moving with the single propodus and they look funny!

Khao Khanap Nam is historic archaeological site where homo sapiens remains were found. If you are craving for historical stuff, grab the chances to visit the Khao Khanap Nam by taking the long tail boat from Chao Fah Pier, which is just next to the crab sculptures.
