Avoid - horrible elephant treatment
Nov 2015 • Couples
Please avoid any attraction that involves elephant riding with chair put on elephant's back for tourist. It's damaging for their backs!
If you want to have great experience with elephants, find place like sanctuary where you can feed them, wash them and riding is only allowed for one person at the time and on their neck without any structure built on their backs. We did such half day experience with elephants and it was amazing.

We stayed 2 nights near Khao Sok National Park and booked a guided whole day tour to Chiao Lan reservoir Ratchaprapha Dam. The guide came picked us at our hotel at 9.30am and it took us about 2 hrs to reach the reservoir. And there after is boat ride and along the way the view was just stunning. There were quite a number of available accomodation on the dam itself. Our tour stopped at the guide "Dam resort" where he prepare lunch for us and after that we took the boat again to the caving. The trek was quite a distance to the cave and it took us about 45mins to walk through the dark cave. The guide told us not to stay too long inside the cave, apparently there were tourists and guide died drowning inside the cave when it was raining and cave was flooded. So it's better to visit during dry season, but then many activities can't be carry out like water tubing, rafting because river will be shallow.

This was promoted as combination elephant trekking in jungle, visit to waterfal& swimming, trained monkey and Thai curry lesson. I was appalled. The elepant ride followed a path lined with old elephant poop and garbage..even a garbage pit in one spot. The monkey was cute but had a bent metal bar around his neck , not even proper collar, and he kept pulling at it. Our leader for this adventure really was on crack and our elephant guides were so apathetic, never smiled...chain smoked...passed several sleeping in cars on "jungle" ride..apparently off duty. No one in our group went for a swim but we were left to browse the poor quality souvenier stalls for an hour at the waterfall stop. The Thai curry lesson was pathetic. And gross. This is poorly run and a horrible thing to do to kids. The name of the elephant ride ( elephants apparently owned by different people than monke?) was Camp Chang Hinlad and I would avoid it and possibly book a taxi or driver to the falls and then do an elephant ride there.
