In October we went on a 3-weeks camping safari with Basecamp. It was already the 7th time we went to Africa but it was by far the best safari ever.
Thank you Ahmed for your patience and for the wonderful itinerary but most of all we want to thank Yuda our great guide who found us so many animals, who knew so much about them and who loved birds as much as we do. Altogether we saw more than hundred lions, 28 cheetahs and 8 leopards.
Last but not least we also want to thank Amisi our delightful cook. He just spoiled us with his delicious food. It was incredible how he managed to prepare a 3-course dinner on such a small cooking fire. I celebrated my 58th anniversary and Amisi surprised me with a chocolate birthday cake.
We visited Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu, Serengeti, Lake Natron and Arusha National Park.

Fabulous experience with Base Camp Tanzania !

Achmed has been efficient and very helpful to organize our trips from France in a very short time due to covid test required.

Trek of Kili on machame route for 6 days was terrific despite one day of rain/ melted snow highlighted by Ben our guide hidden under his umbrella who was singing for us! Camp sites, food, confort were stunning and the joy of sharing this experience with our great team of guides, cook made the trip was unique & unforgettable.

A stop at Ilboru in Arusha was really appreciated before and after the long trek! Very pleasant place and delicious food with a nice pool to chill and the owner Tom really welcoming.

The safari was great too, well organized and breathtaking visiting serengeti, ngorongoro crater (with a fantastic camping spot on the hedge of the crater), and Tarangire lodge with fantastic views..

I would strongly recommend this trip in Dec/Jan/ Feb as the green nature is exceptionnal and Kili covered with snow! A beautiful escape, refreshing, liberating and far from pandemic concerns!

My brother and I attended a 5 day luxury safari organized by Achmed's Base Camp. This was our first trip to Tanzania and our first safari. As we came from the US and UK we needed a reliable operator. I made contact with various operators but was told great things about Achmed and Base Camp and it was ultimately the best decision we could make. Achmed was highly responsive in outlining a trip to the smallest detail. He took our initial itinerary and offered adjustments and improvements with varying price points. He made sure to understand our needs and put together an amazing safari where we went to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and the Crater. From start till finish Achmed takes care of every detail. He was fast in confirming reservations and setting up the trip. Upon arrival in Arusha, he set up our shuttle to our hotel and spent the first evening with us over drinks. Getting us ready for our adventure he answered any questions we had and told stories that are worth as much as the safari itself. 😎

On a special note, one of us has a disability (use crutches permanently) and no where was this an issue. Every step, road, and restroom was made accessible thanks to the consideration put in by Base Camp. For any disabled passengers, I highly recommend you bring it up with Achmed to make sure the trip is seamless as it was for us.

Our safari went exactly as outlined, our driver John Mmary was an amazing guide and as we travelled across Tanzania he made sure to match our energy, telling us about Tanzania, himself, the environment, the animals, and letting us recharge our energy when needed. Everyday went to plan, we agreed on when to start our safari and when to make it back to our lodges, with any adjustments that we asked for along the way. Not only did we see the big 5, we saw much more, cheetah cubs, lions on trees, and even the rare black rhino in the Serengeti.

Once we got back to hotel at the end of the trip, Achmed was waiting on us once again to ask about our journey. The night was as fun as the first, and it's meaningful to see someone so busy at the height of the travel season make time for all his clients.

The whole trip was an amazing experience and I recommend it for anyone who can make it happen. Picking an operator is probably the most important decision in planning, especially if you have never been to TZ. We are really happy we went with Achmed and Base Camp, can't wait to come back.

This is my first written review in Trip Advisor. I have had multiple wonderful trips over the years, thanks to the contributors of Trip Advisor. This review might help someone planning for a safari during COVID. We started planning for this trip with our teenage daughter at the beginning of 2020. I found base camp Tanzania from Trip Advisor and started corresponding with Achmed ( owner ) about logistics of the trip as we also wanted to visit Amboseli National Park in Kenya to see Mount Kilimanjaro. Ahmed is probably the best Travel Advisor I've ever had. He was very prompt in answering my emails, providing me with exact pricing of several categories of Safaris and also was very diligent about saving money on our trip. As I booked all my flights prior to COVID, it was rather challenging to get in touch with Precision Air( flight from Arusha to Zanzibar). Ahmed called the airlines and rebooked the flights for this year, although he didn't book that flight for me initially. He advised us to cancel the Safari last year because of COVID. We restarted the planning around March this year and did the Safari at the end of July. We flew in to Nairobi, visited Amboseli and then on to Tarangire and Serengeti National Park. We also visited Ngorongoro Crater. We stayed in tents which were excellent. Food was great, so was the service. We stayed in Tortillis and Karibu Camps. Service was very attentive because of small number of guests these camps accommodate. Achmed recommended to stay in the tents and he was absolutely correct. I insisted on a stay at Serena Lodge in Ngororongoro, which was less than satisfactory. Our driver/ guide Juda had eyes of a hawk who spotted a pair of leopards at distance and we saw them mating! We were also lucky to see Mara River crossing twice on the same day from very close quarters, credit entirely goes to Juda for his peRFect timings! Only one shortcoming I would like to mention, although it didn't have any effect on our trip, is the absence of radio communications in our Safari vehicle. I probably would have felt slightly safer in the vast expanse of Srengeti if we were in some kind of emergency. This one to Achmed, who has become a friend of mine, although I never met him in person, to get radios for his safari vehicles if possible. But I will be visiting Tanzania again with our son with basecamp Tanzania, radio or no radio!

Hi Thank you for your wonderful review, and for the my friend !! and thank you for the the guide is always the most important part of a safari :-}() Listening the the wild at night when in a tent is the best ! Radios... the shhccccaaa hissing and cackling can be very disturbing and cell phone coverage is very good over most of the Northern circuit. It is a shame we did not meet but the logistics of the trip would have meant taking time out of the valuable safari time to do so. We will have time if you make it back for Kilimanjaro with your son :-}() Until then kind regards Achmed

If you are healthy and not at high risk for complications from COVID-19, this is the time to visit Tanzania. We booked our safari with Achmed at Base Camp Tanzania back in January for June. Due to travel restrictions and limited flights as a result of the pandemic, we had to postpone it until August. We are so glad we came.

August is normally peak tourism season for Tanzania, but in many places in the Serengeti, we were the only safari truck as far as the eye could see. Watching the wildebeest crossing the Mara River, we were there with about ten other trucks, when normally there would be over 50. This is a rare opportunity to see the best of what Tanzania has to offer without the crowds.

As far as safety goes, Base Camp has taken all reasonable precautions, including providing alcohol sanitizer in the vehicle at all times and a supply of face masks (if you don't have your own). Staff in most of the lodges we stayed wore face masks. Hand sanitizer and temperature checks were fairly common. Most lodges touted increased cleaning and sanitation of their rooms and common spaces. Given the nature of being on safari, we felt completely safe. We flew to Tanzania by way of Bangkok and Doha on Qatar Airways, where they required wearing both a face mask and face shield, minimizing the risk of getting sick on the plane.

We can highly recommend working with Achmed to book your safari. Other companies we contacted never bothered to respond, but Achmed always addressed every single question/concern/request at lightening speed. Also, our driver/guide, Juda, was exceptional.

We have had bad luck with tour guides in the past. When we shared this with Achmed, he matched us with his guide that he thought would be a good fit. Juda has 20 years of experience, knows the northern safari circuit like the back of his hand, and more importantly, knows how to work with guests to make sure everyone is happy.

This is a precarious time for the tourism industry. People all over the world are suffering from a heavy loss of income. Everyone we have encountered here in tourism and hospitality has been exceptionally warm and welcoming. They are genuinely excited to see tourists again. You may find the lack of COVID-19 data being reported by Tanzania to be of concern. For us, Tanzania feels safer than being in the US or Europe. If you visit, get a COVID test at home first to make sure you don't accidentally import it, and once you're here, just be diligent about hand washing and social distancing.

My husband and I went on a 4 day safari with Basecamp in December 2019. Everything was amazing from start to finish. Achmed organized our entire itinerary and was very accommodating when I had to add on some dates. Achmed met us before and after the tour to go over everything. Our guide Christian was extremely knowledgable, always on time (if not early) and very accommodating. We went during wet season and were warned that we would not be able to see everything because the grass was so high, however we ended up seeing all of the big five and much much more. Do not miss a dawn game drive in Ngorongoro crater. Overall we could not have asked for a better experience!

We recently traveled with Base Camp Tanzania this month (May 2022) for a 10 day safari to Tarangire, Ng Crater, Serengeti, etc, and cannot say enough about the professionalism and execution of this amazing experience. Achmed (Owner) was very easy to communicate and plan with. Our guide, Uda, was clearly one of the best in class for both hospitality and knowledge. And, the company covered every aspect of booking and safari management flawlessly. Land-cruisers were spotless and well maintained.

I highly recommend booking with Base Camp. 15 years+ of experience from a Arusha based operation really does make a difference for value of your $$ to local experience. We will definitely book again when we are return!!

Achmed and his team at Basecamp are outstanding! We just spent seven weeks in Tanzania exploring various parts of this great country, and Basecamp helped us plan and execute three separate safaris. While most of Basecamp's tours focus on the classic northern circuit, Achmed also helped us plan a safari in beautiful Ruaha National Park in the south and worked to get us to remote Mahale National Park in the west.

We felt nothing but safe during our safaris with Basecamp. The team has gone above and beyond with sanitizing the vehicle, wearing masks, providing copious amounts of alcohol hand gel and social distancing as much as possible. Being on a private safari helps to minimize contact with others, and all the lodges we visited during our journey took similar distancing precautions during meals and other interactions.

Achmed must be the best in Arusha at replying to emails. When planning, we wrote several other companies and got delayed or no responses from many. His often come within minutes. His driver guides are all excellent. Special shout out to Juda and Robert for taking good care of us! And thank you Basecamp for THREE great safaris!

We visited Tarangire, Ndutu, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, and saw everything we wanted to see, including the Big Five, the Great Migration, a wildebeest birth, hunting shows, lion mating, and close encounters with elephants that felt like we could touch them. Our every wish was fulfilled, all thanks to the owner Achmed and our guide Chris.

Among the many travel agencies, Achmed gave me the best impression in our correspondence. His responses were very prompt and genuinely thoughtful, such as his recommendation of Tarangire, which most others suggested we stay in Arusha on the first day, even though we arrived at JRO at 8am and told them we wanted a safari-focused itinerary. Guess what? On our first day, we saw a herd of elephants walking towards our car in Tarangire (thanks to Chris's experience, he predicted the direction of the herd's movement and stopped the car ahead of time to wait for them, a herd of 10+ elephants including several baby elephants, crossed from both sides of the car. It was super exciting!), and in addition to the spectacular views at Tarangire Safari Lodge, we also went on an interesting bush walk. We were so lucky to have gone there. Thank you, Achmed!

And our guide Chris. With nearly 20 years of experience, he brought us to roam among the animals, fulfilling our desires to see certain animals and chatting with us about Tanzanian culture and education. He made our 6 days enjoyable, and his driving skills were so good that the motion sickness medication we had prepared was unnecessary! He even led other guides to cross a river, truly LIKE A BOSS!!

We really appreciate Basecamp for giving us such a satisfying itinerary. Thank you Achmed, Chris, and the staff. I have already recommended Basecamp to my friends, and if they come to Tanzania, they must choose Basecamp!

We had a great experience with Achmed and his team. Achmed is a very reliable professional and also quite a (nice and friendly) character! We climbed the Mount Kilimanjaro with Ben and Peter, they were very helpful and without them, clearly we wouldn't have made it to the top. Then, we went on a safari with Base Camp (Chris and Nemis, our fantastic cook). What an incredible experience ! The whole thing was very well organised. We got in touch with a few companies but Base Camp was from far the most reactive and offered attractive packages to us. We travelled during COVID restrictions and Achmed was very supportive and adaptable so that we can get tested in Tanzania and have the test results before we fly back home. Such great memories, let's hope we can travel again to Tanzania very soon!
