There is very little to see of this old structure: a bit of ramparts and a clock tower. It presently is a prison. It is located near the fish market so you may as well saunter over for a short look. I caution if you are old enough you may think of that classic Peggy Lee song 'Is that all there is?'. I liked the massive tree on the prison grounds as much as anything.

One of the most distinct tourist attractions in Negombo is undeniably the Old Dutch Fort. This is a structure that goes back to Sri Lanka’s colonial days when the nation was once under the rule of the Portuguese and then the Dutch. The city was encircled by an earth wall. Eventually the landmass on which the Old Dutch Fort Gate was constructed was regularly washed by the sea.

The original fort was built by the Portuguese in 1640 but it was taken by the Dutch in 1672 but nowadays it is the prison so it is impossible to gain access unless you are incarcerated. However you can see the nearby clocktower, the outside walls and you may likely see relatives of the prisoners lining up for visiting their bad guys.

Sad to see that the entrance is dilapidated.... And could be maintained better.
But a must visit when in Negombo... And walk up the road to visit the pretty little church.

We visited the Dutch Fort in Galle on our tour of Sri Lanka it is truly built with only the stones and coral from the sea. Lovely old buildings and beautiful views over the ocean., All Saints Church was also very interesting

Historical. But the surroundings are not maintained well. It is just there in the middle of the fish market and a prison. Needs a lot improvement on the maintenance. Would take a max of 5 minutes to visit and click pictures. Usually not a crowded place. No tickets. Open for all. 300 meters from The Miura Dutch Edge Hotel, which I would recommend for a stay in Negombo.
