We contacted Sarath at around 11am when we reached the Negombo town and he directed us to the starting point of his boat tours, where a boat was made ready for us within half an hour. We had the boat (which could easily seat six) for ourselves, with a friendly, yet professional, skipper, Jude, who provided an interesting commentary throughout the ride and humored all our requests for taking photos .
We did the Hamilton canal-->Negombo lagoon—>Muthurajawela tour which took around three hours to complete. The boat itself was comfortable and well-maintained; the views of the lagoon and the marsh were inspiring; and stopping at the mangroves to feed some monkeys bananas was a nice touch. This boat ride to Muthurajawela is a must do if you are a family (local or foreign) visiting Negombo, and the one arranged by Sarath Boat Tours stands out as a reliable option that is also reasonably priced.

Sarath the genial guide & boatman is eagle-eyed & passionate about spotting countless birds & other creatures like water monitor lizards. He explains so much in the time while puttering down the canal then speeding across the vast lagoon & deep inside the marshes. He’ll also stop a fisherman to look at a giant crab, scoop a jellyfish out of the water & chop up bananas to lure monkeys onto the boat - then watch them swim!
A fabulous experience, not to be missed - hard to beat his knowledge & enthusiasm

We had a sunrise tour at 6 am and a sunset tour at 4pm around the lagoon, the river and canals and mangroves. Each trip was around a different area. Sarath was great for explaining what we were looking at and naming loads of birds. He manoeuvres the boat and moves slowly so we had good access for photos. We even got to see a monkey take some of our papaya which was lovely. Three different kinds of kingfishers, eagles, blue tailed bee eaters, land and water monitor lizards up close, fruit bats, a purple heron and we briefly spotted two birds of paradise. Very friendly crew offering regular fruits including lychees, coconuts, bananas, pineapple and papaya. Delicious. The visit to the fish market was interesting with good photo opportunities. Highly recommend.

Great tour, book it !
Got picked up by boat right at our retreat and than went through the Dutch canal out to the mangroves and into the lagoon. We saw heaps of wildlife, different birds and the monkeys came right into the boat for some pineapple. Our guide Ju (who surely appreciates a little extra tip) was very educated showing us so many animals and even spoke a few words german. Water and fresh fruit was provided.
Very recommended !

We had a magical time on the canal and mangroves with Sarath. He was amazing at spotting wildlife and happy to stop and even to go back to help maximise our experience. We saw 5 different types of kingfishers and 5 types of herons including 7 nighttime herons. A highlight was 2 white bellied sea eagles. Lovely guy, great price, highly recommended

My girlfriend and took Saraths boat at sunset. It was a truly beautiful experience. He is very knowledgeable and has a sharp eye for spotting wildlife. He’s incredibly passionate when explaining about the wildlife and nature which surrounds you. The views are stunning at this time of day and the smiles of the Sri Lankan children that we saw en route smiling and waving is something that will stay with me forever. Would definitely recommend.

We did it again and it was great again! Definitely a must do when you are near Negombo.
Sarath picked us up at the hotel with bus and driver and took us to the boat. So no long walking through hot Negombo with its uncredible traffic.
Dutch Canal was closed due need for cleaning but the lagoon and the Muthurajawela Marsh with all its birds and animals was a great experience. One of the top events was the monkey feeding in the jungle. Sarath made it that they can jump on the boat to grab the pineapple pieces we offered. So we can shoot a lot of low distance pictures of the monkeys.
Inside the marsh Sarath knows a nice place where we rested a while for bathing, food and cold beverages he organized for us and so it was a great time.
Sarath understand English and German and therefore we had no problems to communicate. Tell him before your trip what you want to see and he will arrange it. He knows everything about the country and the wildlife. E.g. we asked for the Flying Foxes and he simply turned around the boat and brought us to the place they are.
We would always go with Sarath again.

What a find this was. I contacted them through their website and we booked a 3.5 hour boat trip. We were picked up from our hotel in Negombo. We boarded the boat on the canal, sailed into the lagoon and visited the Mangroves. We were told all the birds, animals and plants we saw. We spent a while with the wild monkeys and didn’t stop smiling from start to finish.
If you do one thing in Negombo, book this trip.

We had a wonderful boat Trip in the lagoon and canal today. Even that our request was very spontaneously we were provided with Perfect and immediate Service. The Guides did a fantastic Job and so we could enjoy to Watch a Great Variety of birds and Otter animals like warans, Chamäleons and Leguans. The lagoon gives fantastic insights in a Magic world. We Learned a Million Things and got Chancey to take close ups of all the birds and animals. I Definitely recommend this trip and the Company, The Ride through the canal gave us also very Exciting views in the Life Next to the water. Book this Tour with These amazing guys-you will Love it. It’s an Adventure.

Jude the boatman was amazing at being able to spot wildlife from the moving boat. He was full of information on each animal that we saw! I would definitely recommend the 3 hour tour as it gave us plenty of time to reach the furthest end of the lagoon where we saw the most species!
He was helpful and courteous while taking time to ensure that we had the best trip possible!
