About
The Galle Fort is a visual metaphor for Sri Lankan history. Ancient Sri Lankan culture collides with colonial architecture in ways that can only be described as mystical. It is why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a favourite among tourists coming to Sri Lanka, today and in days past. This magic and mystery is what Galle means to me. I am Shanjei, a former advertising executive from Colombo. A year ago, I quit my job because a)I was intrigued by this magic and mystery Galle Fort had to offer, and b)because I didn’t want to be confined to the concrete jungle of Colombo. Being the kind of inquisitive person that I am, I chased this mystique obsessively – so much so that I decided to become a Tour Guide to the fort for people like you. Yes, you. If you like your tours to be interactive, fun and decidedly less history and more story then I am the person you are looking for. Want to learn more about the little nooks and crannies that make Galle Fort less a fort and more a home for its many residents? What about the many cultures that mingle seamlessly within the fort’s confines? Its people? Then get in touch. Let me help you decode the magic and the mystery of Galle Fort.

Shanjei provided us with an excellent tour. Through his tour and our interaction with him, we were able to contextualize present day Galle (and Sri Lanka) and the history of the region. Would highly recommend Galle Fort Walks for anyone looking to learn about present-day Galle and its history.

We had an absolutely fabulous morning walk with Shanjei last December (2022). We were a group of two adults and a 2-year old busy bee, and were paired with another couple with 3 young kids. You would think this was recipe for disaster but Shanjei was really good at informing and entertaining both adults and kids. I am very impressed with his knowledge of the fort, the VOC history and generally knowledge of Sri Lankan history. Super interesting to see and hear, especially for someone who was born and raised in the Netherlands.

I can really recommend this tour to anyone cause like Shanjei says it is not a tour it is an experience and he tailors it to your needs and interests.

100% worth the money and we will be back next time we are down south from Colombo with friends/family who are visiting.

PS he is a fab yoga teacher too! Do join one of his classes if you can!

I enjoyed meeting Shanjei and getting to know Galle Fort as well as hearing stories about Sri Lanka and it’s people through personal reflections of Shanjei. If you are after a standard tour of the old part of the city, this won’t satisfy you. But if you are curious about the place through the eyes of a local person, and interested in more than just a history anyone can read in the book I would definitely recommend to go on this walk with Shanjei.
I walked through Galle Fort on my own first and when I walked with Shanjei I definitely saw different parts, I was also able to retell the stories to my friends who I then walked through Galle Fort the following morning.

To be honest I never join standard tours and find those rather boring. I prefer to meet local people, have conversations with them and that way to discover the parts of the place that will never be written into a guidebook - and this is exactly what you get through this tour.

This was an evening tour and we had a beer at the local pub just behind the main bus station (definitely not something I would experience since I am a solo woman traveller).

Loved every part of it, the beer and the stories. Would highly recommend!

A walk on the Galle Fort with Shanjei is definitely not something you want to miss if you are ever in Galle. The magic of this historic stronghold is magnified by this black bearded charmer and the experience he offers.
What is most special about it is that he takes his time to get to know your interests so that he's able to give you an experience that is tailored for you - making you feel like a part of the tour and the place rather than following someone around who's spewing out historic data and dates.

A great way to learn more about Galle Fort without feeling like a history lecture. We had a ton of fun in the 90 minutes and his knowledge of Galle, Sri Lanka and beyond is very impressive. We started our tour at 5pm which was perfect to include day and night as well as escape the heat. Highly recommend!

We began our tour expecting a regular guided tour with rehearsed talking points and a set formula. Instead we got a truly unforgettable and unique experience. Shanjei gave us a guided tour of the fort that was highly interactive, educational and entertaining. Shanjei has a huge personality and it really showed in the way he guided us around the old fort (full of jokes, wise insights and even some of his own backstory and family history). This felt more like an experience with a friend with whom you would share a beer than your standard guided tour. Shanjei’s English is also remarkably good for an English second language speaker and we felt we could ask really detailed and nuanced questions and receive thoughtful and thorough answers in response. Can’t recommend Shanjei’s guided experience enough!

We had an excellent time discovering Galle Fort with Shanjei. He was truly insightful, and full of really interesting trivia and stories about the history. You can see that he loves this neighborhood and feels deeply connected to his history. He responded to our curious questions earnestly and took us through his favourite streets.
It’s definitely not your average guided tour ! Can’t recommend it enough.

We had the pleasure of being guided through Galle Fort by the charismatic Shanjei, whose vibrant personality brought the rich culture of the fort to life. His insightful commentary provided a deep understanding of the history and heritage of Galle/Sri Lanka.
Shanjei's engaging demeanor made the tour not only informative but also thoroughly enjoyable. His connection to the local culture was evident, and his passion for sharing it was truly inspiring. It's no surprise that his captivating presence has been featured on Channel 5 and BBC programs. Shanjei's tour was a highlight of our visit, leaving us with a profound appreciation for Galle/Sri Lanka and its unique charm. Highly recommend experiencing Galle Fort through the lens of Shanjei's expertise!

We stayed in Galle Fort for 5 days and enjoyed exploring the streets and historical buildings. I got in touch with Shanjei to take a walking tour for an hour - to see the Fort from a local viewpoint. The 3 of us had a great time with Shanjei and enjoyed a Beer at the oldest Pub in Galle (the Sydney) at the end of our walk.
Highly recommend getting in touch with Shanjei - he will taylor a personal tour for you, keep you entertained and interested to know more about this wonderful place.

Thank you Gary! What makes a great experience is the people who are on it too. So I've learnt from that it takes two Irishmen, an Aussie and a Lankan to start a party!
