The place has a great feel about it. Very touristy but also for locals except in the expensive places. It has great shops and restaurants. It is pricey but beautiful. Something totally different to other places in the country.

I visited fort and can tell that we have a magnificent view from the walls (I was making photoes at strange waves and then at home found out that they were made by fins of sea mammals, probably whales )) ) And the fort itself is a blillant exibit of fortifation. Its the rare type.

Galle is one place in Sri Lanka where history remains in tact because it has never been abandoned. Some of the buildings you see today looked exactly the same if you manage to find an ancient photograph. Take a print of the photo I am sharing before you visit as you will not be able to find a printed paper... More

We happened to visit the Fort on a Poya Day, so it was busy with locals. You get good views of the surrounding beaches, and there are the usual tourist gift sellers

The area is not very large - you can walk round the whole thing in less than an hour. In some parts you can walk on the walls, in some parts you can't. Good to walk round and try to get lost. There are about 50 jewellery stores and the remainder are cafes, restaurants and boutique shops

Go in the cooler evenings and walk around the bastions and walls. Then stop for a drink or meal in the old Dutch hospital. A wonderful way to end a day.

the buildings are so beautiful and it has its ancient charm, this very nice local professor invited us to his house which is undergoing renovation and its so huge inside with 6 bedrooms and 3 courtyards, such a eye opener. it cost us rupees 300 from train station to the fort which is like 10 mins ride.

after all the wildness we experience in Sri Lanka, it is a very nice and surprise delicate destination for a change.

This fortified town is a must see site. It's history is thoroughly linked to the history of Sri Lanka and its colonization by Portugal, Holland and Britain. This town has both a sophisticated air about it as well as a ramshackle side that clearly permeates throughout.

The old Town of Galle is probably the most relaxed place in Sri Lanka. Whether you go to see the sights or just to see the people or just to relax on the beaches (hidden away and quite crowded) this is the promenade of Galle. Lovely to do and follow the walls to see al there is to see in... More
