Did a walking tour of the Galle Fort Area and visited the church during the tour. A historical church building with a lot of history and cool to see all the inscriptions on the floor of the church in Dutch. It is free to enter. We did a quick tour of the place but definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.

This is situated in the galle dutch fort and it was built by the Dutch in 1755 and is one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use in the country. There are many tombstones stones date goes back the 18th century during the Dutch period. And also there were some 2 basement cellars, which were closed/ barricaded.

One of those things you see while in Galle, the church is surprisingly well kept, and is full of tombstones inside and out. There is also a small crypt that is locked. (Don’t fall down!) Stop. Look around. Take a photo. Move on. (And leave a donation.)

This serene church oozes history, from its simple white stone exterior, surrounded by granite tombstones of former Dutch settlers.
Inside its plain wooden pews and grey flagstone floor is like stepping back in time.
Make sure you read some of the tombstones in the floor - fascinating piece of history - beautifully preserved.

This review is quite late. The Dutch Reformed Church is conveniently located within the vicinity of Galle Fort. The beautiful church building is well maintained and is neatly covered with white paint. I went inside and found a group of young choir members having their practice. It is interesting to see many inscriptions on the walls and on the floor.

The church is beautiful and in great condition. We spent about 10 or 15 minutes having a quick look around, especially at the tombs built into the floor. The writing, of course wasn’t in English but we could read the dates and some were adorned with a skull and cross bones. There were also tombstones of settlers outside the church, many of whom had died at a young age. You are sure to walk past the church so pop in for a quick visit.

There are some interesting gravestones inside and outside this church but not much information is available. The church does not look particularly well maintained and though there appears to be a crypt, that area has always looked rundown over the 20+ years I've seen it.

The Dutch were amongst the worst colonisers; rapacious and violent. But walking through the church and reading the various dedications one can't but marvel at their sense of adventure, or was it rapaciousness. Whatever.. definitely a place to visit and reflect.
