Very interesting museum about the fishing communities around Sri Lanka and the marine ecosystem. For tourists, the entry fee is 300 LKR each but it is a very small museum - even taking the time to read absolutely everything, we were out within 30 minutes.

It is located by the original entry gate in a nice yellow/orange building. The entry fee for foreigners was the oddly determined 910 rupees. The museum is over four galleries on two floors, plus a gift shop. Most of the exhibits are encased in glass with descriptions also in English. Shipwrecks in and around Galle harbour--like the Avondster--highlight the growth of marine archaeology in the country. The history of trade is explored as well, including the role of China. The museum will not wow you but you will get a decent appreciation of items found in various shipwrecks and the role of Sri Lanka, Galle in particular, in maritime matters. It can readily be done in an hour.

Have really enjoyed our visit to this museum. Nice overview of the museum by a video at the start and then 4 large rooms with eg one dedicated fully to a Dutch VOC that sunk in 1659. Can recommend

This clearly used to be quite an interesting museum but following tsunami damage (a few years ago) it hasn’t been restored in any imaginative way... so it’s very dingy and uncared for. The group of men sitting about in the doorway must be the curators, I suppose.

There was a bit of geography and pre-history reviewed and treasure recovered from sunken ships and there were models of old ships. Well worthwhile.

A great place to shelter from the rain. That’s about it.

The curation is poor, there is no real story to be heard or seen here. Just a load of old pots.
