This picturesque river gorge near Seogwipo is where the Hyodoncheon Stream which starts at Hallasan Mountain meets the ocean, it was popular on the afternoon of our visit with tourists paddling hired canoes in the gorge. The other option was a paid ride on a simple log style boat. For us we were happy just to view the gorge from the well constructed cliff boardwalk. Free parking was available adjacent to the river on the road.

Did somebody say “free?” Soesokkak is a gem that locals recommend. You do not need a guide but only a pair of waterproof or Keen shoes. The rubber dinghies at “Swesokak” are back in business—at least if you arrive early enough in the morning. Cash is helpful; with the cafes you will want to carry around the equivalent of $10-20 min. The best time to come is May until Oct., especially after rain- or hurricane season into late Aug. Taxi drivers also know the best point of entry ending at the black sandy beach, close to the “reclining cow” or “pond’s end.” Only on this island, “Olle” means crater/mount; but much of it is easy trailing on a smooth or boardwalk path, following the estuary. Looking down there towards the fjord/gorge—grey-black or white stone set against azure blue waters—will make for a striking photo. It’s a far easier trek than climbing stairs up nearby Jeongbang Falls and towering Halla-San!
