Two full days were not enough for the splendor of Gyeongju and its surroundings. A must see if you are in South Korea in my opinion. The old capital of the Shilla kingdom has a lot to offer, much has been preserved and/or restored. In any case, be sure to visit the burial mounds and the star tower.

This city served as the capital of the Silla Kingdom for a thousand years and many significant buildings were of course in this area. As I understand it, much of the buildings were lost after the destruction of the kingdom and most of what we see are reconstructions. The site is huge, but walkable. The main things that have been rebuilt include Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond, Cheomseongdae Observatory and Woljeonggyo Bridge. The fortresses that were part of the complex is still being unearthed, especially in the southern part of the site and I would love to come back to see more.

lonely planet defines this city as a museum without walls. it has many wonderful parks and many attractions to visit, though many of them are only explained in korean and very hard for foreigners.i really suggest to rent bikes, you can find several places where you can do it and the whole city is perfect for it.

We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon here! The tombs are amazing, the flower fields beautiful, and the history informative. A wonderfully done area. Would go again if we had the chance.

Gyeongju was a truly beautiful spot in Korea, bereft of the ugly skyscrapers and wires which blot very available piece of land throughout the rest of the country. It was all easily accessible, whether on bike or on foot, and a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of Busan!!!

We spent half a day in this area with a guide from Viator. It was well worth the cost. CK was knowledgeable, he led us to the best vantage points, we did not waste time waiting in line, and because of his expertise, we were able to enjoy the experience without getting overly tired. It was a holiday weekend, and there were crowds! But we were able to get the most out of our time.

If your visit to Korea is anything more than a short trip to Seoul, this small historic town is fabulous. While most of south Korea undergoes major development, with hi-rises and construction sites everywhere, the national government strongly restricts development in the Gyeongju area. This makes this region a great attractions to both domestic and international tourists. Great destination for a weekend visit, allowing not just to see the sights but also mingle with the locals.

We spent 3 days here but could have stayed longer. Gyeongju is a fascinating ancient city with history at every turn.

My wife, daughter and I visited Gyeongju in March 2017. We were disappointed. The highlight, for us, was the National Museum but even this was easily eclipsed by the National Museum in Seoul. As for the rest of the historic area, there is little really to capture one's attention, particularly compared with other historic sites in Asia. The tombs, for example, are simply mounds of earth in a pleasant, but uninspiring, park.
Overall, we would have done better to spend extra day in the National Museum in Seoul and to skip Gyeongju altogether.

On a 12 day trip to South Korea we tried to get a sample of rural, historical and urban experiences. Decided on a couple of days in Gyeongju for the historical, rural aspect. We misjudged this part of our trip. We spent 2 nights here and should have stayed longer.
Did not take advantage of riding bikes as we enjoy just wandering around on foot. And this area truly is a Museum without Walls! There are so many fantastic things to see and do. Burial tombs through out the community. Museums. Ponds. Great daytrip opporutnities. Festivals.
We seemed to have outstanding luck on our visit here as we went out for an evening walked and stumbled upon a 2 day festival. Not the Shilla Cultural Festival as it was a week prior, but another full-on festival featuring traditional music, dance, lantern displays and then at night hundreds of lit candles in the air for good luck.
All in all we had a great time in this area. Lots of history. Easily walkable (long distances but interesting). Great hotel (Mini Hotel 141). Night festival with traditional music and dance. Gorgeous lanterns. Really was a great spot to visit and learn about Korea's history.
You should make this part of your trip as well!

Take a city tour bus by city tourism office
Written July 27, 2019
Hello! We are going there this February by bus straight from
Incheon. Is it easy to sign up for tours when we are there already? Do a fair amount of people speak English?
Hoping for tips that will help us. Thanks!
