Old Supermarket above Jalgachi Subway
Oct 2019
My Korean friend brought me to this nondescript supermarket as it was quite near my hotel. Blink and you may just miss it as it has a tiny entrance but it is a two storey store. The locals refer to it as 'Hanaro Mart' and it stays open till 11pm. This is a very old supermarket and when we dropped by just before 9pm, there were more staff than customers. The cashiers were chatting loudly among themselves. Fresh produce and dried goods are on the ground floor while the upper floor stocks processed products, beverages and household sundries. The air is musty and airconditioning is almost non existent. Store layout and product display is not shopper-friendly, while the staff speak only Korean and seem disinterested in serving customers. When my friend and I were browsing in the kimchi and laver sections, the two women staffing the area eyeballed us, looked away and continued chatting. Product range seem to cater to locals rather than an international clientele. Unlike in Lotte Mart, you won't find proactive staff here. With my friend's help, I managed to find the barley tea, cultured milk, soda and chips on the 2nd storey. I decided not to buy the sorry looking fruits from Hanaro Mart and patronised the hawkers just outside the building instead. The street hawkers had fresher and better quality fruits and slightly lower prices than Hanaro Mart. The cashier who toted up my purchases was gruff and avoided eye contact. Though there was no other customers at the checkout section, she did not bother to put my purchases into the shopping bag I had brought along and placed in front of her, and continued chatting with her colleagues.🙄
