Start point of my downtown walk
Jan 2020
I wandered through the visitor center's displays. They have a historical view of the history of Albany and the neighboring Quackenbush house. It's free and gives good background info for the city.

Very knowledgeable staff
Nov 2019
Whether you know Albany well or not, this place should be your 1st stop to get info on city attractions & happenings. The woman who helped us had a wealth of knowledge on what to do, where to park at different attractions, & some history of the city. If you're a fan of the Hamilton musical, the Schulyers are a big part of this city with a special exhibit running at the Albany Institute of History & Art. Also their mansion is where Alexander married Elizabeth. Albany has colorful murals & dog sculptures at various spots around the city so the staffer gave us maps pertaining to them if we wanted to seek them out. The dog sculptures are now indoors for the winter so we only saw 2 but it would be fun to see these whimsical creations around the city in the spring. The visitor center itself has artwork displayed & a historical exhibit.

Worth Finding
May 2019
Finding this place is challenging and kind of like a well kept secret. We thought we knew what we were looking for, and we were wrong. But once we were there, we realized we had not allotted nearly enough time for our visit. They not only have basic visitor center information and a small gift shop, but they have a very interesting museum on the history of the area. We could have easily spent an hour or more here. Note: when going through, start to the left.

Parking is a difficult and expensive all over town, and this area is no exception. Do yourself a a favor - go down Spencer Street, and take a right on Montgomery to the end. There is free parking under the highway ramp for the Visitors Center, and it is very convenient.

What a wonderful place!
Apr 2019 • Friends
We were walking to a restaurant and happened by the Heritage Visitors Center. At first it seemed like a typical welcome center with booklets etc. Then we noticed a room off the hall near the bathrooms. WOW! What a cool museum. This is a real gem, a wonderful place! I highly recommend visiting. To my surprise, such a great museum had no charge. They also have a cute gift shop.

Great First Stop-needs better signage to find it
Jul 2018 • Family
We saw the signs for the Visitors’ Center from the highway, but once we got off the highway, we pretty much had to guess at 1)where it was and 2) where to park. Albany, please add some better signs for your visitors!

As for the center itself, we found it to be very helpful and very informative. We wanted to do our own walking tour, and we were given an excellent map for just that very thing. The exhibit on Albany’s history was worth spending time at. It was well done! The visitors’ center also has nice, clean restrooms, a welcome sight after traveling a bit.

I recommend making this your first stop if you are new to visiting Albany.

Hidden, helpful, but maybe not worth a stop
Oct 2018 • Couples
When we visited, there was much construction at the given address and you’ll likely arrive (via GPS) at a restaurant that is more prominent. This modest visitor center is hidden on a walkway around the corner. There were a few student groups when we visited. The lady at the desk was helpful with directions, suggestions, and there were a few displays, but there really isn’t much to see there.

James, Thank you for visiting our Center. For GPS directions, please use the address of 679 Broadway (restaurant next door), as GPS does not recognize our pedestrian street address of 25 Quackenbush Square. Our main entrance is on the pedestrian walkway which connects Broadway to the parking lot behind. We have an exhibit gallery that details the history of the city of Albany, a USS Albany naval exhibit, a planetarium and a gift shop. Our mission is to provide an overview of our history, what to see and do while visiting the city, and to encourage you to go and explore more!

Worth visiting this centre for its historic information. The area itself is very old and the exhibits well explained. Helpful staff.

Historic and Educational
May 2018
This place of history, art and science is a must see stop on any visit to Albany, You will be led on a trip through Albany's Dutch and English history with easily understood illustrations and descriptions. Rotating art exhibitions by local artists are featured throughout and an excellent observatory is on the premises. Early Albany archives and exhibitions are also available. Adjoining is an excellent Brew Pub is you want a meal after - or before - your tour. Highly recommended.

Pleasantly surprised at the display and helpfulness

Living in this area for around 40 years, I was very pleased to know how the city of Albany has developed a tourism information center. They provide interesting tours focused on different interests and different participation levels.
They coordinate with and provide specific information about local visitor sites.
