We tried to visit also St. Paul's church in the complex but it was closed due to lack of tourists owing to the corona virous restrictions for tourists in israel. Tabgha church has a small parking and a gift shop and a small pond in the entrance. Inside there was a nun and a priest chiming the bell. What I found interesting was the wooden ceiling and the byzantine era inscriptions on the floor, right of the altar. 10-15 min should be enough fo your visit.

This church and place commemorates the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. It is a peaceful and beautiful church of extreme significance. Set in tended grounds. There is a mosaic of the event and as usual signage indicating the numerous religious buildings identified on excavation.

Parking is unreasonably expensive, but there is a lane outside where you can park your car along the road. Another problem with this place is that the local gift shop does not accept credit cards. Cash only.
Otherwise, my wife and I enjoyed this small courtyard with a beautiful tree and a small pond with plump fish.
A bit of interesting history, but in general it makes sense to come here either if you were specifically looking for it, or as one of the points of interest of a long excursion.

Very unfriendly staff. We walked in the park with our kid (then six years old) and just wanted to sit in the shadows when someone of the staff came and shouted that we had to leave the premises immediately and why we walked in. When we answered that the entrance was open we were told that this could not be true. We left immediately and we will sure never come back.

This was one of the stops as we toured around Galilee. The main attraction is two churches which have both a story to tell in the Holy Land.
The area is popular amongst your groups so it can get very busy so be patient. Certainly worth a visit as part of your Holy Family story.
Both churches do have stricter dress code rules which they monitor- these are clearly signposted. You will need a couple of hours to view what is on offer. Probably best couples with a visit to the Mount of Beatitudes and Capharnaum.

The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes (also known as the Church of the Multiplication) is a church in Tabgha (ancient Heptapegon) on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee.
The church is modern but stands on the site of 4th and 5th-century churches. It preserves a splendid early Christian mosaic as well as the traditional stone on which the miraculous meal was laid.

The Tabgha Multiplication Church is famous thanks to the preserved ancient fish and loaves mosaic, Tabgha Church is relatively modern but stands on the ruins of 4th Century Church which traditionally believed to be the site of the multiplication miracle.
Tabgha mosaics reveals birds and plants and it is preserved in such a great condition that it is actually possible to identify the animal and birds species.

In a very close area, you have the Mount of Beatitudes, Church of the Primacy of St Peter and the Church of the loaves and fishes. You many not spend a long time at any of these, although my personal favorite is the Mount of the Beatitudes. Since all are within a 5 mile radius, make you you take in all of them. Beautiful churches and amazing views.

On my first trip to Israel and Palestine this was just a quick "pit stop," and due to long lines I never got to see anything. Returning now with a friend who happens to be a tour guide, I had plenty of time to savour the experience. Before entering the grounds of the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, look to the left at the ancient large stone baptismal font. It appears that people may have actually been seated within the font as it seems to have four carved out seats. Just inside the entrance, notice the little pool with fish. This may not seem significant, but the name Tabgha actually means "seven springs," and warm water from two springs makes for a happy home for these fish. On the plaza, take note of the olive press and the adjacent stone used to collect the oil. Upon entering the courtyard, there is a small gift shop on the left before actually entering the church. The entrance doors to the church are interesting. There is also a plaque on the wall showing the original floorplan of the 5th century Byzantine church that used to stand here. This church was built to that same floorplan. The mosaic floor in the church may be the highlight of the entire site. It is exquisite, with all sorts of wildlife incorporated. Just in front of the small alter is the famous mosaic of the basket and fish. Behind this is the rock upon which Christ blessed the loaves and fish before feeding the multitudes. With plenty of time and no busloads of tourists I was able to appreciate the visit.
Nearby is the Church of the Primacy of St. Peter. It is a small church of black basalt, different in appearance from other churches. It houses a large rock where Christ is said to have made his third appearance after the Resurrection and cooked breakfast for his disciples on that rock. That large stone is also referred to as "Mensa Christi" or the "table of Christ."

The brilliance of Tabgha is not about church buildings! In front of a church you can place your feet in the Sea of Galilee, knowing you are placing your feet within about 100m of where Jesus stood when he called the Disciples to throw their nets on the other side as per John Ch 21. See the mountains across the other side of Galilee which would not have changed much in 2000 yrs. It takes no effort to imagine the Disciples' boat being about 100m away. Here a number of small streams enter the Sea of Galilee causing fish to school according to different water temperatures and food sources which makes sense of Jesus telling the disciples to throw their nets on the other side of their boat. Sit on the grass with your own food and imagine Jesus building a fire and speaking to his disciples. It was the nearest I got in Israel to the Jesus who was there 2000 yrs ago.

I am coming to Israel in a few weeks and definitely want to go to Tabgha. Do I need a reservation? Also, do you have public toilets there? Thank you so much! Ann
