The temple is regarded as a place of religious harmony and a major tourist attraction in Lombok. I'm unable to comment on the former and the title of major tourist attraction is questionable. It dates to 1714, built by King Anak Agung Ketut Karangasem, and is the oldest and largest temple on the island. There seems little pride in maintaining the temple or grounds, rubbish scattered throughout and rotting mounds of rubbish alongside the track. The only enthusiasm generated was by our guide.

This is a large temple with very few visitors. Actually we were the only ones. There are two water pools at the entrance. And then a parc covered with plastic trash. Awful. You have to pay to get a sarong to visit, way too much for what it is. The lombok temples are deceving compared to Bali and other places.

If you like temples

Then you may well find this interesting.

I'm not overly keen on them unless they are genuinely spectacular, so found this ok but no more.

Would happily have done something else with my time.

A must visit for A Historical Buff

This the most unique temple in Indonesia. The only temple that belong to two different religions; Hindu and Muslim. This is probably one of the strongest symbols of a great relationship between Islam and Hindu in Lombok.

Best time to visit this temple is during Maulid, where you can watch an interesting cultural event called Perang Ketupat (Ketupat War) or locally known as perang topat. Not a real war tho. It was just a fun fight, yet it is actually a symbol of peace between the two religions; Islam and Hindu in Lombok. In this war, the attendances are grouped in to two based on their religion, before the war started, there will be first some ceremonies and praying leads by the Head of each groups. The highlight of this event is people from both groups will throw each others using Ketupat ( A diamond-shaped rice cake made of young coconut leaves). Also you'll find lots of cultural custome parade and a showcase of Lombok's cultures.

This place is a sham

Our experience at Lingsar Temple was the worst part of our trip. The guide claimed that he was stationed here by the government and had been doing this for the past 15 years, but his English was hardly comprehensible. The temple layout was pretty straightforward but he kept trying to drag out the tour by repeating the same information. We were so worn out after 20 minutes of trying our best to understand what he was sharing and being courteous though there were so many red flags. He told us it would take another 1.5 hours more when in fact we were able to walk through the entire temple in just 5 minutes.

At the end of the trip we gave him a tip but he said that was only enough for the temple donation and insisted on another 50k for himself. When we refused he harassed our driver for money. Mind you, our driver was way more senior than him but the guide was thick skinned and showed zero respect. We returned our driver the money but it was upsetting to see him treated so poorly for trying to protect us.

The temple is more like a recreational space for locals than a historical site. Everything is so run down, I highly doubt any money is donated to its maintenance as the guide claimed. Avoid at all costs.

Interesting BUT

When we arrived hadn't even got out of the taxi when a guide approached and said you have to go with a guide, which out taxi driver said. No entrance fee, guide seemed pleasant and knowledgeable. Once we started the tour it became blatantly obvious this was a moneymaking process. The prices we were told to pay for the different parts of the tour were ridiculous. Left a bitter taste in your mouth. Whilst we enjoyed the history aspect of the tour and information we received, I would not recommend to go unless you get some prices before you enter. Once we had paid for the guide, the sarongs, the eggs for the eels and the man to call the eels, the donation for all 3 religions it cost us over 200000 rupiah and we didn't pay what was asked for. Whilst this is not a lot, compared to other temples we have been to in Indonesia it is exorbitant. Maybe we had a dodgy guide.

Say no to the guide!

Like others, we were taken around by the guide who insisted it was mandatory for us to have him there, he then asked for a donation for the priest and then asked us to pay him! Otherwise, the temple was very run down and there was not much to see.

Not much to see

Just an 'Ok' temple (it is better to visit Meru Temple). Not much to see. A temple for Hindu & Muslim praying side by side, but only managed to visit the Hindus' Temple. A guy will asked you to fasten the yellow cloth (on your waist) & asked whether you'd like to see the sacred eels lives in the pool by feeding them. The price is Rp10k for 2 duck eggs. We were asked to wait for the pawang (talisman). Waited for almost 5minutes & a man came asked us to wait without introducing himself. He started to tell us the history of the temple for nearly 15minutes & came the talisman (but a woman..talisman).

We were ushered inside the pool area & the 'taliswoman' started to break the boiled eggs, throwing in the water & knocking the side of the pool, hoping that the big long eels to come out & feed the eggs. But none came out. So they ushered us to another place with squirt water & started to 'call' for the eels. Unfortunately only baby eels came. After their unsuccessful attempt, we have to give some donation to the 'taliswoman'. We paid each Rp10k for the 'taliswoman' & the storyteller. As you were about to return the yellow cloth, you need to give donation (again). So we left the temple followed by the 'storyteller'. At the parking area, he asked for Rp50k for his story telling. After a little argument we only paid him another Rp15k. Beware of these people who took opportunity on tourists.

Unity in diversity

This temple is rich with history and legend. To understand local culture and history is to enrich our knowledge. More than justbtourist sightseeing, it also tells some moral. I can learn from the way people from different religion can live in harmony praying at the same place. As indonrsian i really see our ideology... Unity in diversity. A must visit place if you come to lombok.

Not worth a detour

We went there a few days ago. They insisted a guide was necessary. The information was interesting, but it quickly turned into a scam - or at least it felt like one. Supposedly you don't have to pay an entrance fee but should consider a donation. However, the donation was mandatory and the guide insisted in being paid as well. He became rude, looked at our 'donation' as if it wasn't enough - our driver couldn't believe we paid that much - and all the kindness was gone.
