This temple is like abandoned. The good thing is that we were alone. Nobody else. But we understand why, there is not much to see. We had to pay 20’000 per person for nothing. There are the three wood construction in the midlle. The 33 stalls around are just empty wooden boxes. No statues or decoration. No water pool around. Waste of time.

The place on the pictures is not Pura Meru. Its Mayura Water Palace - admission 5000 IRp. Quite nice and quiet place with fishermen around the pond. Unfortunately the main temple which is on the water is closed (blue gates with padlock on one of the pictures). If you need a break from noisy streets you can really enjoy this place.

And Pura Meru is nice temple i suppose just across the street. But as soon as I entered the main gates the guy, who said he lives here and he is a guide, started demanding 20 000 for entrance (just for people who clean the place) and 50 000 for a guide service. So under this circumstances I decided not to visit this "nice and big" temple.

We were dissapointed by the temple. Run down and empty. Too bad we paid the 20k each entrance but oh well! Theres just not a lot to see here. Go see the temples on Bali, theyre much more well kept and interesting to visit!

Pura Meru, located in the heart of Mataram, is the largest Hindu temple in Lombok. It has, as the guide said, no less than thirty-three shrines, dedicated to the Hindu Trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

I came here on a hot afternoon. There was NO ONE there except the ticket seller. Why do you need to buy tickets to the temple? Of course, I didn’t understand, but the price (about a dollar) didn’t bother me and I didn’t bother to find out the details. I opened the small lock on a very small door myself and entered the second courtyard. In the first one the seller actually sat and there was a parking lot. The temple seems abandoned, but it is clean, there is no garbage, the grass is mowed. The main shrines are in the third, main part, the courtyard.

Of all the buildings in the courtyard, the most interesting are the three multi-tiered towers, visible from afar, called “Meru” by the locals, built of teak wood with thatched roofs. The central Meru, the highest, towering over eleven sanctuary levels, is considered the abode of Lord Shiva, the nine-tiered Meru, located to the north, is revered as the house of Vishnu, and the southern Meru, also nine-tiered, is revered as the house of Brahma.

In addition to Hindu deities, the Pura Meru Temple is dedicated to the three sacred mountains of Indonesia, including the volcanic peaks of Mount Rinjani, Gunung Bromo and Mount Agung. The holy sanctuary is an example of traditional Balinese architecture and demonstrates the spiritual life of the Hindu minority in Lombok. Although the guide’s story constantly included the epithets “magnificent” and “huge,” this temple complex seemed to me most likely cozy and homely. In neighboring Bali there are many larger and more luxurious temples than this one. The sculptures installed here and the bas-reliefs are interesting.

The heat and bright sun did not allow me to thoroughly clarify all the details. I understood one thing for sure. There are very few Hindus here in Lombok. Especially in this area. And the temple is more of a museum than a sacred place. Nearby, in a huge, beautiful mosque with two minarets, a mullah loudly chanted his drawn-out prayers and parishioners went there, but here it was completely empty, just me and the ticket seller. And I really remember one modern detail. A row of lightning rods along the Meru towers. The historical towers are well protected from possible natural disasters.

it's really nothing to see..
you're forced to pay 20k for each person as donation for admission..
the money is not the big deal..
what matters is why do you have a "price tag" for a donation??
that doesn't sound right for me..
disappointed..
my personal advice: if you're really into temple.. go visit pura lingsar.. but beware for people that might take advantage on you.. look for my reviews/comments there..

The people in charge of this place are terrible, they wish to take advantage of the tourists using made up religious things, it’s very low. A guy in front tried to charge 20k, I know it’s not much, but he didn’t even have tickets, so I felt he was just trying to steal money, I refused to give him anything unless he proved it was official, he became agressive, shouting and pushing me out of the temple. I went to the police and the called the owner who made up a terrible excuse of charging because I needed to put a piece of fabric around my waist (I was completely covered from knees to shoulder and arms), and that it was because of something cultural in Mataram only. The cops were even laughing about how ridiculous this was, but they did nothing. In the end I think he ended up feeling bad about trying to get money using religion and offered me to go inside for free, but by then I was so upset that I didn’t want to see it. Please, if you go refuse to pay, so that they know that it’s NOT OK to try to rip off people.

Looked like an abandoned temple, they were no people apart from two of us. You have touts outside who would charge you 20k per person for entry without any ticket being issued. Inside the temple as well you have only 3 shrines . You have far more beautiful temples than this , better to avoid it.

Pura Meru is part of Taman Mayura in Mataram and comprises the biggest Hindu temple on the island with the shrines of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh along with the religious textbook Bhagwat Geeta kept in one of the shrines. The place has history that resonates with Hindu culture and mythology if you are aware of it. For example, why this is called Taman Mayura and what are the symbols in the central shrine of Jagatnath Temple. The Pura Meru part or the water spring which apparently runs only on 20 Jan as per the guide has nothing much to offer and many of the stories around the spring water and the banyan tree behind it might be just folklore. My reservation was via hotel so I did not pay for anything at the entrance. However, the local guide do try to milch money but do not specify the amount. So I paid 50k Rp which my wife complained was too much because the guide was not genuine in his approach. Yet, what to complaint. This ain't the most famous spot for everyone and the caretaking staff of this monument actually survives on such donations, tips, etc. so it was fine.
For slow-paced visit through the compound, it would take approx 45 mins to view everything.

Interesting merus (towers), but the deities were all missing on the day we visited. Very interesting for those interested in Hinduism and/or the religious history of Lombok. Others may choose to skip this one.
