Gili air is located between gili trawangan and gili meno but i prefer Gili Air because not too crowded like trawangan but not very quiet like gili meno. This place is great for spending time watching sunset and enjoy the holiday. Price is ok, not expensive. View restaurants that can options to eat but just a bit difficult to swim as the other side is many small boats parks and the other side is so many rocks and shallow.

We’ve loved everything else about Gili Air but seeing the horses treated how they are is seriously heartbreaking. Please don’t be an ignorant tourist supporting something such as this - seeing them whipped and worked into the ground is not what I call a tourist attraction and this mode of transport or ‘experience’ is not done with love for the horses. Majority of them are forced to stand in a line in the sun all day with their carts attached which can be very fatiguing for them as they can’t move or rest. Majority of them are suffering from hypersalivation (badly foaming and drooling at the mouth; a number of things can cause this but it’s not good whatever the cause).

This place is beautiful and fun, but would be even better without to poor treatment of these beautiful animals.

The mosque on Gili Air apparantly has a new loudspeaker system. We've been coming to Gili Air for more than 20 years, but this year for the first time we were sleep deprived. Up to five times a day (and sometimes for more than an hour!) calls for prayer come out of the speaker system at a volumen that penetrates the last corner of that otherwise beautiful island. Especially from 4.45 a.m. to 5.50 a.m. sleep can become impossible if you don't wear ear plugs. I would recommend to look for accomodation far from the village. Or look for alternatives.

People trying to sell you things every two meters, trash everywhere, dead corals, tourism exploitation at its best! But the worst yet to come: overloaded, beaten, thirsty, and hurt horses in every corner, carrying construction materials, food supplies and tourists. I simply dont get how people can "have fun" in a place like this. I just cancel my reservation, took the first boat and will never, ever, go back. The image of this horse banging his head in absolute madness and about to collapse cant get out of my head and I´m ashamed to say I ever stepped on that place.

after first hand experience witnessing the horrible cruelty these horses are out through day in and day out it’s hard not to share what these horses go through. Standing in the hot sun all day, with no water or food to graze on, and being forced to carry tourists and luggage to their hostels/ hotels (when it’s literally an hour walk from one side of the island to the other and bicycles are for rent everywhere you look). These horses have open wounds and rope burn from their equipment rubbing up against them 24/7. They are dehydrated as they are foaming at the mouth for water, and have every bone sticking out showing they aren’t getting enough to eat/time to graze. I understand horses will be used for work, but this is more of an animal rights issue and they deserve the respect to be treated well. They are absolute slaves to profit. Electric tuktuks/Bicycles should be the way to go on this solar panelled island. Help these poor ponies out and spread the word. Jarkata animal aid has been working to try and get electric tuktuks to the island as these horses don’t belong here.

Currently been on Gili Air for 3 days. Anyone saying this place is “unspoiled” is downright lying - rubble and garbage EVERYWHERE - concrete, wood, plastic, dried up seaweed, broken coral, be it on beaches, in empty lots or on the side of the road.

There are touts everywhere too, harassing you to buy or rent things, be it happy hour drinks or cycles or crappy trinkets. I really wish we hadn’t come here.

The place is overrun with bargain hunting tourists and the “locals” have all migrated from Lombok and know or care little or nothing for this island. Stay away!

Each to their own!

So I spent the day and over night on Gili Air, first impressions was ok with its clear waters and sandy beaches, however after walking around the island it’s very dirty and full of litter, while I appreciate it is a poor island no one seems to mention the dark side of the island.

I travel with work worldwide and I would not class this as paradise more as a get away for hippies, back packers and people into drugs (like I said each to their own)

It took us just under 2 hours to walk around the island and I lost count how many times I was offered mushrooms and cocaine which was very sad as Indonesia as a whole is cheap but it’s expensive to get here from the UK

My tip to you if you come here is lower your expectations so you’re not disappointed, and bring wetsuit shoes as the beaches are full of coral (at least that’s natural) and is very sharp

I can not take away the views from this island as there are always 3 side to a story, mine, theirs and the truth.

it’s not for me, give me a 5 star hotel on Aruba any day.

Our experience on Gili Air was mixed. Some good and bad experiences.

But by far the worst thing on this island is the treatment of the beautiful horses. The ponies are whipped, made to cart around tourist which should know better!!

They cart around supplies and the locals don’t care about their wellbeing.

If you go here it takes a matter of seconds before you observe distressed and abused ponies.

The horses are not looked after and are submitted to constant abuse until the die.

Do not contribute to this disgusting practice and culture.

Getting to Gili Air, I travelled 1.5hrs to Panang Bai from Seminyak in Bali by bluebird 300,000rp. Travelled by fast boat with Eka Jaya which is the only boat I use because it’s new aluminium not wood, big, safe and fast and will take you to any of the islands in 1.5hrs, you can pre-book with your hotel, driver, travel booth, or just turn up, I advise to book before you go. Gilli Air is a treasure a lot more quiet than party island Gili T, I always stay on the Westside facing Mt. Rinjani which is beautiful to wake up to for sunrise. Orang Villas or Villa Coco republic are my two favourites cheap, homely, including breakfast. Sunrise Resort is a nice spot also, with the island being so small these places are all close to each other, within walking distance or pushbike. Sunrise resort beach area is one of the best areas for swimming, snorkelling , relaxing on there lounges, serve great food. On this side of the island paddle boarding is great you can do sunrise and sunset paddles which are both beautiful, the water so clear this time of year seeing sea turtles only feet away is magic. Even yoga on paddle boards SUP. Diving is amazing here also, with a fab diving schools where you can get your Padi over 3-4 days with very qualified instructors. All islands are close so little trips by local boats or private speed boats can take you for tours. Lombok is a short few minutes boat trip (I use private speed boats), they will pick you up from your bungalow and take you to Lombok which is another great island to visit, amazing beaches, incredible waterfalls.
Sometimes I fly to Lombok from Bali which is around 35 US dollars each way, depending on the weather conditions, these waters are extremely deep and waves huge when certain times of the year. Airport is approximately 2 hours to get to harbour for the Gili’s, if you wish to stay overnight in Lombok there is a 4 bed villa Koo Villa next to harbour which is owned by a local family, Iz the owner has great English and knowledge and will organise any tours and your speed boat to Gili Air. This little villa is cute in amongst the village, probably the only accommodation next to your take off point, this is not the main harbour which is better because it’s much closer. Once tour there it’s a few minutes by boat.
Enjoy the Gili Islands it’s perfect. 😜

This is not the tropical paradise I was expecting. I really don’t understand why people love this place...You might enjoy it if you are looking for a hippy / backpackers get away but that’s it.
There’s garbage and dead corals everywhere you look, beaches are non existing because the tide is always really low and makes it impossible to swim. Facilities on the island are very poor, restaurantes and hotels just average. People on the island are constantly trying to sell you something: jewels, boat trips, drugs...Yes, you can rent a boat and take a snorkel trip around the island but it doesn’t get any better. They are exploiting the area in a way that is really painful to see. People are stepping on living corals (there are just a few of them, the majority are dead and I can see why...), hundreds of boats are spinning just right in front of the coast so you can see that water and sand are extremely dirty. And yes, you can actually swim with turtles (I was really looking forward to that), but it’s you and other hundred people at the same time and you can see how the animales are really stressed out because people are constantly touching them and try to feed them. It was really sad to look at that.
Overall I think it is a very overrated place.
