My husband had been wanting to visit the islands for years, we were very dismayed by the lackluster “paradise” of these islands. We visited gili T and gili air. It was very eerie, especially at night because it was a ghost town, which I’m sure had in part to do from the earthquakes a couple of years ago. The beaches are polluted and covered in coral so you will need to bring water shoes to wear at all times. We stayed at a couple of places which were supposed to be higher end, however they were worn done and out dated. Please do not take the horse cidomo carriages on any of these islands. They are actually ponies and are forced to carry a wagon filled with 4+ people and large luggage’s. I have seen first hand the abuse and neglect that these poor horses receive. My stomach would drop whenever I would hear the bells signaling that they were working, which was all day long. You couldn’t get away from seeing or hearing these poor animals wherever you were on this island. Not only did it ruin our vacation seeing that these poor animals are overworked 18+ hours a day in sweltering heat, but 8 months later I am still traumatized for them. They are malnourished, fed salt water, have open wounds from their ill fitting harnesses, forced to pull a heavy wagon down sand paths and are extremely overworked. If everyone refuses to take the horse carriages, they will be forced to use solar powered tuktuk’s.

Was in Lombok, we took a boat from Bangsa, public boat takes 25 min to Gill islands, and its cheaper. Hotels & Home stays are affordable. Lot of water sports activities available as per our interests.

Spent a whole day snorkeling around the Gili Islands, Gili Air is the best but all worth a look. We had several turtles swim under us, one quite large with literally thousands of fish and 1 sea snake, which was more scared of us... definately worth at least one day trip.

The Gili islands are beautiful. Lots of amazing things to do. But all of it gets completely ruined by the inept and remarkably stupid non existent system at both ports. I’ve been all over the world and this is by far the worst experience. All the while the ports charge fees to leave and enter. Why? None of the funds are used to improve a single thing. For years it’s remained a terrible and idiotic experience with crowds and no system whatsoever. It makes me angry that you pay taxes for nothing. An entire scam. There are no excuses for it. Just greed. Anyone who has been will know. I’m now totally turned off especially when there are more amazing places to go in SE Asia without this level of garbage to deal with. Never again

Ive been to the gilis for 8 times in a total of more then 50 nights! What happen this time blew my mind the WORSE POSSIBLE WAY!

I was to be RUNNED OVER BY A JEEP OF THE LOCAL MOB ruling in BANGSAL HARBOUR in Lombok because I chose not to pay what they were asking and decided to walk outside of the harbour to look for something cheaper! Some singaporean girls knew about it and PAYED THEM not to!

With the recent change of the airport to KUTA Lombok, the number o people going to gili via the public or charter boat as nearly stoped in the last 8 months, tottaly ruining the buisness of the mobs that "control" the harbour! The time it takes to get there from the new airport DOUBLED and so did the price, making it even harder to get to the gilis this way! Last year you could on the public boat around1/3 of forigners.... The last few months.....i was the only one! They are getting increasingly more agressive while negotiating to the point of verbal and physical threat!! But this time it was TOTALLY OFF LIMITS! AVOID THESE PEOPLE, DONT USE THE BANGSAL HARBOUR! Go via fastboat from bali or any other possible way! The arressment in bangsal is even worse than in Bali!! Hope this info is distributed and spead asap!

My husband and i recently returned from Bali and Gili Trawangan, I have never come home so distressed and emotionaly drained from a holiday in my life. How some people can actually review Gili as heaven is a crime and a sad indication of the human race's expectation of a perfect world, how can you possibly be happy to lay on a beach filled with trash and oil spill? How can you be happy to swim in a sea full of plastic and disposable nappies? Its a small island with no infrastructure, people are streaming in from all over the world to have a fat party and leave behind their carbon footprint without thinking about it for one second. You would need a fleet of tankers to remove the trash off that poor little island, and nobody seems to give a damn. It amazed me how the dive centers and restaurants keep their little patches clean, but nobody will extend that cleanliness down to the beach, which they ironically take possession of
for their lounges and restaurant guests. The restaurants and market stall owners are fishing at will, taking everything from the sea, there are no responsible fishing rules being adhered to. Every night you can walk down the street and see loads of fish, octopus, lobster and prawns piled high for your choice of meal, it might sound great but if you know anything about fish or if you are a diver, there is nothing tantalizing about seeing a "Sweet lips" fish lying on a table with all its beauty lost. The horses, those poor horses, I have no words. The saddest animals I have seen, working from early morning until early morning, carting heavy loads, breathing heavily and sweating with welts and abscess from the chaffing of their harnesses. I never once saw a water trough, despite the extreme heat and humidity these poor animals have to endure. We carried four heavy suit cases to and from our accommodation because i refused to be a part of this savagery, its the 21st century for crying out loud! Its time the Indonesian government and the international investors who are raping this beautiful country and Islands take responsibility, what happens in those seas affects the world, and I am afraid to say, if they don't do something soon, that country and its Islands will be doomed. Not "absolute paradise" at all..........

We booked a 4 night stay on the Gili Islands without knowing the terrible suffering happen to the horses who work the carts. It has totally ruined my trip and I would never have come here if I had known beforehand. I cannot believe how oblivious the owners/tourists are to their suffering. I dread to think how many hours they are forced to work in unbearable heat with no water. Even when they are not working they are forced to wear their heaving shackles and carts so cannot even rest. It's not hard to see how exhausted they are. I will NEVER come back here and advise others not to visit either.

We visited Gili Trawangan for 4 days. Upon arrival to the island, we were dismayed to discover it is a crowded, noisy party town for backpackers! Even worse, we immediately noticed the cimodos, or horse drawn carriages, supposedly a 'quaint' addition to the Island atmosphere. In reality, the ponies pulling the carts are overworked, not given adequate water, grossly overloaded (with people, luggage or construction materials) and have badly fitting harness, barbaric rusty bits and feet in bad condition. Upon further investigation, we discovered the ponies are kept in tiny stalls, up to their fetlocks in manure, with no opportunity to graze or turnout. The drivers do not know how to care for them and we witnessed disgusting acts of cruelty (whipping horses to go faster, some tiny sweet ponies being forced to carry 5 or more overweight tourists and their luggage, straining under the weight). We bought a bucket and offered ponies water, when the drivers sat under the shade enjoying a break and drinking water, ponies are not offered water or sometimes even shade. Perhaps the ponies that carry the construction materials for new hotels are the worst off. We saw one pony laden with at least 15 50kg bags of cement, struggling to pull his carriage up a muddy incline. I would urge people to boycott Gili T until the government step in and take this situation seriously. There is no place for horse drawn carriages on a fragile Island ecosystem. Bicycle rickshaws or solar powered golf buggies would be a more moral and sustainable solution. We are aware of two action groups that are trying desperately to help the ponies but sadly greedy businessmen who own the horses (and exploit the drivers who earn a pittance) run a kind of horse mafia on the island, and so far have thwarted the best efforts to enforce some kind of regulations that protect the ponies from neglect and abuse. If you visit the Island, please, please do not use the carriages. Instead, let the drivers and your hotel manager know how offended you are at this practise and how it can affect their business if people stop coming to the Island. As for the rest of the Island, the hotel and restaurant staff made our stay otherwise pleasant, but the pony situation totally spoiled our holiday. We hope more people open their eyes to what is going on here and how the ponies are the ones paying the true price. The other businesses on the Island who turn a blind eye should be ashamed of themselves, especially the hotels who advertise free transfer via cimodo. Shame on Gili T. Shame on the tourists who support this cruel practise. Shame on the owners and drivers who are exploiting these innocent and beautiful creatures. We wont be back and we will be doing what we can to stop this abuse.
