An area with some relatively undeveloped sandy bays that's worth a beach break here to combine with the culture of Bali ( where the beaches can't compare) Plenty of restaurants and accommodation to choose from, & there's also an original fishing village. When we went it was still suffering the 'hangover' from the previous year's earthquake but the resort is likely to start bubbling again with the new motorbike racing track starting up. Worth hiring a motor scooter, especially taking the steep road west where there's an open walled bar with a magnificent view.

Kuta Lombok
We stayed in Kuta Lombok for five days in April 2008 as a family of four. We stayed at the Novotel, which is great hotel in a great location about 3 kilometres from Kuta.
Kuta Lombok is in the south of Lombok. It is a small spread out town in a beautiful bay lined by a long white sand beach. The town itself is located back from the beach. There are restaurants and hotels. Generally, the town looks a little run down. Along the beach are houses and huts that are generally in poor condition. While this may seem a little negative, the positive is that the place is laid back and rustic to the point of seeming a little primitive, which I find appealing. It reminds me of parts of Bali when I first went there thirty years ago. Most of the other towns didn’t have accommodation.
I checked out a number of hotels at Kuta. They were cheap and clean though the gardens were neglected. In some places the pool was dirty.
The hawkers along the beaches are painful and persistent. Understandably with so few tourists they really are keen for a sale. Unfortunately, they can be unpleasant if you don’t buy from them. I found it best to keep walking or cycling when they approach if I didn’t want to buy. I was there for five days and found that their persistence didn’t waiver. They do sell interesting hand woven ‘sarongs’ and the pearl jewelry looked nice.
The scenery is spectacular and it varies a great deal. I walked and cycled a lot and most of the time when walking I would have a beach or headland to myself. Sometimes locals appeared. They were nice and interesting to talk to though the conversation of buying something seemed to eventually come up. Still one has to make a living.
Transport is needed to get to other towns, beaches or activities. As a family of four we chose to hire a car and driver. It was a little expensive at 450 000 a day (use track a car hirer company) but the driver was entertaining and it was a relaxing way to look around. Other people had hired cars or motorbikes to drive themselves. They said that it was good but they had to pay parking fees, beach entry fees, etc. one couple who didn’t pay returned to their car after a day at the beach with a flat tyre. Out of the bushes appeared locals who offered to fix it for a fee.
Before I went I heard a lot negatives and a few positives. My final opinion is that it is very pretty and has a feel of adventure about it. I’m back there next April 09.

I went to Kuta Lombok by car rental, since we're staying in the North of the island, and Kuta is in the south. It took about 1.5 half hour from Senggigi to Kuta by car.
However, the trip was worth the effort. The beach was beautiful (really beautiful!) The sand was unique because it's a bit coarse like pepper (also the color), and your feet would sink a bit when you stand in the sand. So, its really fun to run about the beach. The view was breathtaking, and you might find tourist from all over the world looking for surfing spot (which is plenty).
And you might also buy the local woven craft from Lombok, which is really beautiful with cheaper price... :D

Kute beach is dangerous and run by thugs. They tried to bash me with an iron bar and motorcycle helmet in broad daylight with 5 on 1.
They were trying to fleece 900 dollars from a German couple for a minor scratch in a motorbike that would have cost $25 to fix
When I offered advice to the couple to take it to a workshop to fix it instead , the thugs became violent.
I am 6 foot two and a bigger Balinese turned up and became very menacing, then pushed me, and tried to bash me with motorcycle helmet in the car park by the beach.
Other masked assailants turned up with iron bars and tried to strike me
I called for police but they were "unavailable"
3-4 motorcycle mugging a occureach week in Kute , serious ones requiring hospitalisation
Even women have been stabbed !
It's a dangerous place and you should not risk going there till the police and government clean up their act
The thugs operate in the open with tacit support of the police
If Lombok wants tourism they must protect people from criminals first

We stayed one night at Sekar Kuning Hotel at Kuta Beach
Unfortunately, we made the same bad experience as many others before us.
Be careful: a lot of "surfer boys" and other weird people are hanging around offering motorbikes, surf lessons etc. They are not member of the staff!
We wanted to rent motorbikes, I asked at the reception if they knew a good place to rent some. There were signs at the reception telling that it was not possible to rent the biked in the yard, they would not belong to the hotel. I was a bit startled when the guy at the reception told me to see with his friends in the yard, they would rent the bikes.
We wanted to test the bikes and because of a problem with the brakes, my friend got afraid and slipped with the motorbike, but without really falling. We came back and one of the guest told me not to book with them or to be very careful and take pictures of the bike every day, because the guys were accusing the guests of breaking the bike every day.
Despite all the warning signs, we still decided to rent two bikes and went to the room to fetch the money. When we came back, we were accused that we made a huge scratch on the bike when falling and that we had to pay for the damage. Of course we refused to pay. The situation got really tense and the guy got so angry that he fetched a stone and shouted "I kill you I kill you" to my friend. Nobody moved to help us. We quickly took all our stuff and wanted to leave the hotel as soon as possible. But they were blocking the entrance, so we couldn't leave. We asked the reception if they could call a taxi, but apparently it was not possible. They also did not call the police, although we asked them many times. The supposed owner of the bike came and wanted to solve the problem, but he just wanted the money. He asked for 1.300.000 rupiah. We still refused to pay, but after almost 2h of shouting, discussing and still nobody there to help us, we finally payed 850.000 rupiah and they left. We immediately left with a car to Senggigi because we were too afraid to stay. It's a shame nobody from the hotel helped us or tries to change this situation by quicking out this motorbike mafia.
Be careful around Kuta when renting a motorbike and take pictures of it everytime before using it!

Beware mafia style aggressive bracelet vendors are operating on the beach of Kuta Lombok. I was chilling on the beach at 2 o'clock in the afternoon right next to the main road, not so far from Puri Rinjani a major hotel. Next thing a twenty year's old local guy threatened me with a glass bottle! First I said to him I was not interested to buy bracelets. But he said 10 times I must buy or he would knock me down with the empty beer bottle that he had picked up on the beach. I should be clear that's day time in the middle of the afternoon, and there are people everywhere. First I was laughing at him, but he was not, and he became more and more threatening, so I had to stand up and go away from him. I can't believe Indonesian police is not doing anything to clean up Kuta Lombok from the hawkers mafia. Later I saw the same guy on a almost brand new scooter carrying a very young bracelet vendor all the way to other tourists that were sunbasing. That's clearly organised crime. Stay away from the beach.

Quite recently, there has been an armed robbery on nearby Tanjung Aan Beach. Two German Tourists have been severely injured and their travel vehicle was heavily damaged. This brutal assault was obviously planned in advance. There is evidence that arriving tourists are being watched at arrival and being followed, and hints about their whereabouts and monetary situation might also be given from locals.
For your own safety: Watch your surroundings, don't be trustworthy to anyone and don't carry valuables at any time.
It’s sad, but safe dream beaches have become rare nowadays.

I visited Kuta in Jan 2018 after first travelling there in Aug 2007, what a disappointment and shock to the system.....the beaches, roads, markets and streets are strewn with litter to the point of repulsion. Such a shame as South Lombok is a stunning coast line. I wouldn't even lay a towel on the beach it's so filthy now!

I think you may be the Demographic they would like to attract.. But Tourism is new here. Before Tourists the locals ate bananas and pineapple, other natural foods and could throw away the skins and left over fruit as it is biodegradable. Westerners brought plastic. Yes we are the culprits. A new community project from SLCA (southern Lombok community Association) has set about getting Large Rubbish bins placed around town (if you want to be part of the solution, you can sponsor a bin for just Rp 150,000 a month that's $15 AUD. We provide the bin and clean and dispose of the trash in a government sponsored responsible way) SLCA are also educating children through schools and Lombok Kids Foundation have started a weekly clean up. slowly through this education children and their parents will understand why its not good to throw rubbish away or burn plastic. Give us some time and Come back one day and see the difference.

I am part of SLCA ( southern Lombok Community Association) we set up in large part becuase of the rubbish situation. We ahve been doing some clean ups and also we now have Bins for sponsorship. We are rolling them out over the next few weeks. They are large and we will take care of rubbish collection and cleaning and maintaining the bins. We ask people to sponsor one bin at Rp150,000 a month. That is around $15 Australian. If you would like to be part of the solution please let me know and send your email address and I will send a sponsorship form. We are also training kids about rubbish and the effects on the environment and hurting sea turtles and sea birds. We do this hrough the lombok kids foundation and through education in the schools. you visited at the only time of year we have flys. and the governemtn in the october had pulled down all the illegal buildings on the beach so it was loooking VERY bad in deed. Please come back in a year and see the difference ;-)
