Kampung Adat Ratenggaro in Sumba, Indonesia is a unique and culturally rich place. The traditional Sumba houses with their tall roofs offer a fascinating view of the island's heritage. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, and the village has a special atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time.

However, my visit was somewhat affected by a few issues. Unfortunately, cleanliness is a problem in some areas. I noticed quite a bit of animal waste, especially from horses and pigs, which made the experience less pleasant. Additionally, I felt uncomfortable because many children were constantly asking for money. While I understand that tourism is important for the community, the frequent requests were a bit overwhelming.

Overall, while Kampung Adat Ratenggaro has its charm, these issues impacted my visit. With better cleanliness and improved management of interactions with tourists, this village could provide a more enjoyable experience.

With the rising of Sumba's tourism, Ratenggaro is rapidly gain its reputation among tourists. It becomes a must visit place when in Sumba due to its traditional houses and megalithic tombs.

However it's sad that the people become victims of the sudden fame. The children were rude to the point they can freely ask tourists for money. Some of the kids below 12 were even asking for cigarettes.

The village is amazing as you enter it, passing giant tombstones. You will have to pay a donation to the head of the village, around 3 euros per car. Traditional huts still in use with their amazing high roofs, piglets and dogs running around. People sell handcraft and are generally friendly if you ask them before taking photographs, chat and/or smoke with them. Betelnut is also much welcome. Just sit down, enjoy the ambiance and amazing view towards the sea. They do pictures with tourist on horses for a fee and sell sarongs they bought elsewhere. Well, what would we do I a remote spot like this to earn at least some money?,

Worth a visit to study the architecture of the houses.
This is another place where they ask you to fill a "visitor donation book".
If you are strongly against this, just take some photographs from the outside and walk away.

We had to pay around 5€ for 2 people. We were then allowed to sit on the premises. First we went to the beach. Two boys came running straight away. They wanted us to take pictures of them. Unfortunately, I also took a picture. They were following us. When we wanted to move on they wanted money. They also became more intrusive. They threw wood and two stones at us. Catastrophe!! At the entrance to the village, 3 cars were surrounded by around 25 people. It was hectic. We were able to chat briefly with 2 tourists. You should always pay more in the village, even for pictures. Your guide was able to help. We were without one and didn't feel safe. We went. Unfortunately, you still have a lot to learn. If you don't like tourists - don't leave them in the village. Or deal with them differently if they want money

A beautiful tourist spot with stunning beaches, cultural authenticity and cultural houses that are still preserved.
