Riung 17 Islands in Flores is an ideal destination for a family vacation, especially for couples with young children. Here’s a review based on the experience of visiting with a family:

1. Natural Beauty and Snorkeling: Riung is famous for its cluster of 17 islands, featuring white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. For children, the calm water is perfect for safe beach play. Couples who enjoy snorkeling will find plenty of great spots with vibrant coral reefs and a variety of colorful fish.

2. Private Beach and Island Hopping: If you and your partner are looking for some quiet time, many small islands offer the sensation of having your own private beach. Rutong Island, for example, offers stunning views and a very peaceful atmosphere.

3. Bat Island: Kids will love watching thousands of bats hanging from the trees on one of the islands. It’s a unique and fun experience, adding an educational adventure to your trip.

4. Boat Tours: Island hopping via traditional boats is an exciting activity. These boats usually have canopies to shield children from the sun. Make sure to pack some snacks.

5. Accommodation and Food: Riung offers simple yet comfortable accommodations with a serene rural atmosphere. Some family-friendly homestays provide spacious rooms. You can also enjoy local cuisine, including fresh seafood, which children tend to love.

Riung 17 Islands provides a perfect balance between adventure and tranquility, ideal for strengthening family bonds while enjoying breathtaking natural beauty.

In a beautiful bay not far from Riung (17 KM) are very nice designed bamboo houses with everything you need and a veranda with gordeous view. The owner and staf are very friendly and helpfull. They can arrange nice boat trip to visit pulau Pata for snorkling includeding a delicious lunch. It’s absolutely worth it to stay here minimal 2 nights. We love this place!

Had a good time snorkeling, and chilling on the islands...the beach bbq'ed fish was awesome. Accomodation in Riung is poor value tough..stay in nearby Watulajar instead. It's about 20km east of Riung, and you'll find a set of wonderful beach bungalows: Eco Eden Bungalows. 200.000 a night. From here you can arrange snorkel trips as well. Awesome setting, near the beach and a small community. If you've trouble finding it (it's pretty new the owner - who I met in Bajawa - told me), go with ojek to desa lengkosambi, and ask for pantai Watulajar or Om Lipus....enjoy :))))

Before you judge us as naïve, trusting and stupid, let me say that we know, in this instance, this is true! This is merely to serve as a warning to other travellers to Riung who may suffer the same fate as we did.

We would normally never have had valuables on our boat the day we went snorkelling, but our circumstances made this unavoidable and hence our tale of woe. We had considerable money and credit card details stolen from our secured bag sometime during the day, either while snorkelling or having lunch on Tiga Island. We were never warned by our guide, Anchank B, that our valuables might not be safe, and we naively assumed that he would keep a close eye on them in our absence as he was never far away from the boat. Part of our reason for hiring him, and paying a higher price, was that he spoke excellent English and would act as a guide instead of just a boat driver. When we arrived on Tiga we were alone, but by the time we finished snorkelling there were five other boats parked next to us. Without knowing what happened, or how far this scam reaches, it would seem that Tiga provides an excellent opportunity for thieves on different boats to have access to snorkeller’s knapsacks and other belongings.

Don’t be fooled by the sleepy look and feel of quiet, little Riung. It is home to some excellent and very professional thieves who not only want your cash, but will also use your credit card details very quickly to make on-line purchases. Hopefully our stupidity will save others from being victims of this brazen theft.

We did 2 daily snorkelling trips. The coral and fish here is very good as are the beaches.
On the second day we had to pay the balance of our cost to the organisers of the boat tour. so we took that money on the boat securely padlocked shut even though we were warned by our staff at Nirvana cottages to only take on the boat what we needed.
When I went to pay a significant amount of money had been taken. they had got into a very good quality TSA rated lock.
There was only an old man (captain) and a 14 year old boy on the boat.
So dont use the "boat people" on the left as you look down the pier towards the sea its a bamboo type homestay set up. They are all in on it as was our driver Angi from Maumere who steadfastly kept pressuring us to use this place for our snorkelling.
Book your snorkelling in the place you are staying and keep the money in your room and come back to get it and then pay.
There is a definite racket going on in this place.

If you want an unforgettable experience you should do a tour with the guide Alfredo Sua to explore the amazing area around Bajawa! Alfredo is a certified guide. He knows everything (about plants, trees, history, culture) and is very kind and funny. You don't have to pay more than an uncertified guide. If you want to have a good impression of the area, call Alfredo (+6282341639468)

So the pros: The bat island is an amazing sight to behold, though you can see a similar one in Labuan bajo. The beaches on the island are pretty enough and the snorkeling is nice.

Now the cons: the town is tiny and has only two options for accommodation. The hotels have obviously colluded to raise prices to a ridiculous amount, knowing that you're out of luck if you want something cheaper. The hotel we stayed at was also terribly maintained, with a broken shower, busted fan, etc. It also had a ton of mosquitoes inside because the screens on the windows are garbage. All of this for 340,000 rupiah.

The boat ride to the island is also quite overpriced. Most people I talked to were paying over 300,000 rupiah each, not including the park entrance fee and the lovely boat fee they tack on as well. Remember, this is a small town. Everyone knows everyone and they're going to hit you on the price before undercutting each other. Finally, the boats are falling apart, some with water leaking in. This problem is made worse by the fact that they don't have life jackets. Better hope a wave doesn't capsize your ancient dingy while out in the ocean.

You should probably avoid riung and stick with Labuan bajo as its far easier to get to and has more options for snorkeling, komodo dragons etc.

This beautiful boat trip on the Flores sea to 17 island was bye far the most memorable of the trip. Stopping along the way to see an island of flying Fox , to boating further to a secluded island for a fish barbecue cooked bye the captain and his mate. To the most spectacular snorkeling I have ever experienced. Truly a fabulous day. Thanks to my driver Udin Toya for arranging everything.

Going to Riung is a bit challenging but the "road" itself, from Bajawa or Ends, is interesting. Have a car, and a driver! Riung itself is a very small town with few amenities, not really a place to stay. You actually go there to take a day boat to the "17 islands", which are beautiful, from the boat. But get ready to be disappointed by the plastic trash that litters all the beaches and that is stuck in the coral, almost everywhere you will snorkel. It's actually really sad. Where is this coming from? Why do local people do not care about?

But you may still enjoy the remoteness of the place, the fisherman's boat, the thousands of bats... Just get ready for all that plastic trash.

I don't know anyone who would go back.

This is a beautiful place. Definitely worth a visit when you're in Flores when you like snorkelling, chilling and barbequing on beautiful beaches and watching flying foxes.

Also worth a visit is the recently opened Café Ricco Ricco owned and run by Mr Awin.

Around 600.000 rupiah for one day (boat incl. captain and chef, food and snorkelling gear included) is a good price when with 4 persons.
If you want to stay a night at one of the islands, make sure to include in your negotiations also the return.
