Beautiful area of Sumatra. The active volcano was cool to see. There is a restaurant there, farm to plate, Gundaling restaurant, excellent. loved the atmosphere, food was great and freshest milk i have had anywhere in my travels.

I have been here many times I like the Highlands. The people are nice and the climate can be very appealing after long hot days in Medan however the traffic to get there and back is absolutely crazy. Plenty of places to visit and lots to see.

Its a must visit place if you plan to visit Medan. Spend one night here in Brastagi and you must try their unique hotspring or the local call it permandian belerang. The quide took us to Rindu Alam hotspring and its worth it. The weather in quite cold at night and the town is popular with their Pasar Buah that sells fresh fruits, veges and flowers. Its only 70km from Medan but took us more than 3 hours to reach Brastagi due to traffic and the road condition but as i said earlier its worth the journey

We stop at area pasar buah and the main attraction here is horse riding. My family enjoy a lot and it was a good experience. You also can shop souvieniers, shirts and local Berastagi agriculrute such as strawberry and orange.

This requires a 3 hour plus drive up a winding, dirty 2 lane road and three or more hours to return to Medan. There is not much to see when you get there except dirty markets, impoverished people and a view that is not all that unique in the world. I was really saddened to see the state of the people along the road and very concerned about all the trash everywhere you looked. The combination of vehicles and 2 person motor bikes made the driving quite hazardous. There must e a better way to spend the day.

By motorbike it was an easy ride to get here from Medan (2.5 hours). It was great to see some Karo Batak buildings in the surrounding villages (Lingga, Dokan). We weren't lucky with the volcanoes as it was throughout cloudy. Staying in Wisma Sibayak was an excellent choice.

Weather in Medan city could get really hot and humid, at this time of year (April), the temperature could get around 32 Celsius. If you go up to Brastagi, you'll feel a much nicer, cooler weather which is around 23 Celsius. This place is located about 2 hours drive from Medan, up to the mountain area.
I have recently had an honor to host guests from European to our city and when we take them to Brastagi, they don't really feel much cold. Us locals would have to wear another cloth to withstand the cold, but they are still okay with just a piece of cloth. What I learn from this experience is that Europeans love mountains and yes, this is the perfect place to enjoy such scenery!
Usually I just go up there for the nice weather but for the adventurous minds, there are various of activities in there, from hiking to (not so awesome) theme park to rafting. If travelling to nature is what you seek, this is one of the best place in Medan worth visiting.
Hungry? There are lots of places to eat, also if you are fancy of pork, there are lots of shop that sell pork here. Hotels? There are really nice resort and hotel here like Mikie Holiday and The Hill. Exotic local fruit? Go to the market and try our local fruits! Need a place for your young family to play? Go to Bukit Kubu (Kubu Mount) and let them play kite or just run around with soap bubble.

We revisit here after 21 yrs. Last we were here in Feb 1994. We stayed in Grand Mutiara Hotel.
This time around, we stayed at Mikki Holiday hotel since its cheaper and just the walking neighbourhood of Grand Mutira.
This time around, we hike up Mount Sibayak. Its a 2200 mtrs high mount. We started climbing at 4.10am and reached the summit at 5.10am. At 6am, the sun rises. Thou was a little cloudy but the ray still penetrated and gave a nice scenery.
Thereafter, we decend and walk for approximately 3hrs to a hot spring. The hot spring does provides its soothing effect for the sores gain from the hike.
Its a good revisit.

Nice views of the 2 active volcano mountains of Sibayak and Sinabung. Cool and breezy place with many local food stalls to explore. I engaged a local tourguide named Adam Nainggolan from a local tour company Rafnam Jaya Wisata on a private tour. Highly recommended. I tried the local food and love the Nila Goreng fish and the Mee Rebus from one of the street foodstalls.

If u don't mind long journey and appreciate scenery & nature ,then u should go lake toba & brastagi. Enjoy the beauty of lake toba & the unique hotspring at Brastagi. Also kawah putih tinggi raja but be prepared for the long journey as there is no highway there. I would suggest you to grab a tour package which provide transport, hotel food, etc. Self drive is impossible and public transport can be hassle.... The city of Medan also have a lot of interesting places to visit. If you are adventurous type.. Medan is also a place for you...Tangkahan...Air Terjun Dua Warna...etc.... Hope this info is good enough...Enjoy...
