Large structure with many statues of Buddha, one very large is positioned outside and you can touch his big belly for good luck. This temple welcomes all ethnic groups and religions. You can also take photos, to visit if you are nearby or interested!

Here is the biggest temple in North Sumatra.
The place you can feel peace and happiness, also beside the temple, you can enjoy bird park.

Maha Vihara Maitreya Temple. Located in the Perjuangan district of Medan, just near to the wetlands reserve in the city. Massive temple complex with just the main hall open to the public. The central image is of the Buddha - tall, grand and dignified. There are many monks resident here I believe and maybe it serves as a training centre. A statue of Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy is in the main hall to the right of the main image, and also in the garden if you peep through the gates. Modern, clean and impressive. Well worth a visit. No admission fee and no donation requested.
Remember to remove your footwear before entering the hall. The complex has a few shops on the right side as you face the temple including an excellent and inexpensive coffee shop named ‘Fortunate Coffee’.
Don’t forget to utilise your time well and visit the downtown wetlands reserve adjacent to the temple - sadly not mentioned on TA, but a site not to be missed.

The first and largest temple in Medan city, this temple prides itself with its slogan "One World One Family" which literally means they welcome anyone of any race or religious views to come and visit. This building includes several huge Buddha statues, some you can take pictures with, some you may only see. There is one huge Maitreya Buddha outdoors that you can stroke his belly for good luck.
At the west wing, is a small pond with many Koi fishes and a really tall Avalokiteśvara statue that you can take pictures with. The east wing has a rather big buffet style vegetarian restaurant. Visitors who are not familiar with our local food can pick anything they like so you can get to try out as much as you like with little cost. There is also a rather new cafe called "Fortunate Coffee" just across the restaurant if you like to have a very good cup of coffee with choices of western dishes.
The whole temple as far as I know is using materials imported from overseas like Taiwan or China, so everything feels authentic as if you're actually in a temple outside of Indonesia. Also, there is a small playground that you can let your kids play for free but there are resting hours (they only let people play in certain times). Last but not least, you can buy gifts at the souvenir shop too! There are cool stuff there like the Maitreya watch and clocks!
About the Location: situated inside Cemara Asri Complex, which is well known for its full offerings of food. From Indonesia to Chinese to Western food, you'll see various choices to eat inside this huge residential area. Also not to mention there are at least 5 vegetarian restaurants in here.

Actually we asked our tuk tuk driver to bring us to Vihara Gunung Timur, but he brought us to this Maha Vihara Buddhist temple. We were happy to see this place. Its very big and can accommodate few thousands devotees in one prayer session. The temple environment is very calm and peaceful. Cannot capture photoa inside the alter. So just follow the rules. Dress appropriately.

The place is out side the city. It takes more than an hour to reach by car.
the place is well planned and is worth a visit.
The place is coming up with construction of Hostel for stay.
Something to see in else nothing to see in the city.

Namaste; If solace is what you seek, you shall find it here in the stillness of this sanctuary. An abode, a spiritual home to comfort your heart, and still your thoughts from the cares you have , if not for the whole day long, at least briefly; it's all in the moments that count. And while you are here, do remember to breathe in, take in all that nature has blessed you with, in the tranquility you enjoy...

A huge and tall temple located in the housing estate of Cenara Asri in Medan. Nice and clean and a peaceful environment. Our frequent visit to pray and seek blessings from the Buddha, Kwan Yin and Kwang Kong. Majestic building and well kept worship place. Quite an attraction for visitors and big compound around the temple. There is also a coffee cafe within the temple.

We had the most humbling experience when we visited and was one of our highlights for Medan and Indonesia.
We learnt about Buddhism and will treasure this memory.
The palace is grand and impressive without being ostentatious.
Also the fortunate cafe serves all vegan food which is amazing the home made bread, tempeh and hot soup were amazing. Don't forget to try the vegan ice cream.
All round one of favourite experiences.
Please go if you have the chance and don't forget to donate.

The Maha Vihara in Cemara Asri is a big temple. The Budha, Kwan Yin and Kwang Kong statues are huge. The temple is spacious and well kept. Good surrounding and a nice place to visit.
