I'm so proud of Medan, one of the most multicultural cities in Indonesia. There's a special place called Little India. They have a beautiful Hindu Temple here. Festive and colorful. You can enter the temple for free. However, you can donate money to support the temple. Please take off your shoes before entering the main room. Not far from the temple, there's a foodcourt named Pagaruyung and Sun Plaza.

The Hindu Temple is located just across of Sun Plaza (a large shopping center), 10 minutes by becak from the Mesjid Raya. Sri Mariammam Temple is devoted to the Goddess Kali. It is the oldest temple that was built in 1884 by Medan's sizable South Indian community. The area is called Kampung Keling, which is basically the Indian quarter of Medan where you can find some excellent Indian restaurants.

Not knowing the visit hours, I came at 12.00pm and it was closed because of the school behind it !

Visit hours :
8.00 am - 12.00 pm
4.00 pm - 6.00 pm

It's the temple right opp sun plaza mall..the reason I mention this is coz it's difficult to make people understand the name of the temple. If u say sun plaza they knkw the mall and the temple is right in front of it. It's a beautiful indian temple with all the statues of God posing in serenity. It's gives u peace and sense of calm when u enter it. Reminds me of tirupati as it does have a sight resemblance.

The Sri Mariammam Temple in Medan is devoted to the Goddess Kali who is the consort of Lord Shiva. The Goddess Kali is also popularly known as the goddess of Time & Death who appears holding a sword, a severed heard & whose mouth is red with blood. Christians similarly worship a man humiliated & beaten bloodied, with torture marks & multiple stab wounds who is then nailed to a cross, must be some ancient trend.

The temple was built in 1884 in the area Kampung Keling - Little India, where the Indians traditionally lived. This is the only Hindu temple in Medan with a true Shiva lingam. It remains as a strong focal point for local Tamil Hindus. Balinese Hindus who are a distant branch of Hinduism separated by hundreds of years politically control the local Hindu religion. The Balinese Hindus wish to tie all Hindus in Indonesia under their own authority, traditions & calendar of festivals. The main sticking point between the two communities is the banning of the wildly popular Tamil Hindu festival of Thaipusam.

The festival of Thaipusam doesn't involve any Thai women but is a major Tamil Hindu festival celebrated on the day of the full moon in January/February where the Tamil god of war, Murugan, received a weapon to vanquish a demon. It was traditionally celebrated when the Pusam star was at its highest point in the sky during the calendar year. The Pusam star is part of the constellation Cancer, more specifically Theta, Gamma & Eta. The festival is also famous for being the day where crazy Indian men pierce their skin, faces & tongues with long needles as a form of thanks. In my culture, you usually just buy someone lunch, I’m just sayin. I hope both Tamil & Indonesian could be free to stab their tongues with needles all they like.

Hinduism's biggest festival however is one where both Tamil & Balinese Hindus can unite & celebrate together in unity at the Sri Mariammam Temple, it is the Maha Shivaratri, the annual festival of Lord Shiva. It occurs each year on the 14th day of the moonless night of Magha, basically February-March. It involves the ceremonial washing of Lord Shiva's lingam while devotees all stand around & watch. Washing the Lord of Destruction's old fella is not something you really want to mess with no matter who you are.

As a Hindu, i wanted to visit a Hindu temple in Medan. The temple had not many people there, hence it was quiet and peaceful to pray. The temple itself is beautiful from the outside to inside with beautiful sculptures.

Shri Mariamman Kuil Temple: This Hindu Temple is a friendly and welcoming temple and the folk here are happy to have all faiths visit if suitably attired. Take off your shoes and walk into the main hall. Photography is allowed, but of course I avoided taking photos of devotees or of the divine images in the recessed rooms. All areas seem to be open for strolling around and the ornamentation is something of interest and beauty.

The main column of the temple is being renovated presently and is in its undercoat of paint. I’m sure it will be in colourful majesty soon.

It is always a great privilege to see other religions first hand and this temple is no exception.

On leaving the temple I noticed a Sikh flag in the building next door and thought it worthwhile to take a look. I was welcomed and given a free guided tour. Headdress is required and provided. If you prefer a scarf or handkerchief of your own that will be adequate. Temple not listed on TA, but if your visiting this temple why not make the most of your visit in the area.
