The palace is beautiful but the area around it is poorly maintained. Many parts of Sudan are damaged, only a small part remains as a tourist attraction.
To enter you have to pay a ticket to maintain the palace. Inside there are several souvenir sellers, prices can be negotiated and there are several places for photo spots that are pretty good. The room is not too big to be called a palace.

I'm really proud of Maimun Palace. It's an icon to Medan. The palace itself is really beautiful with its bright yellow ornaments. The palace has a mix of european and arabian architeture. I love the exterior as much as I love the interior. With IDR 10.000 or less than USD 1, you can feel the royal atmosphere. They rent out malay traditional outfit inside the palace. I don't really like the idea of having stores inside the palace. But yeah, you can try it and take some pictures as prince or princess. Last but not least, we need more gallery to read about the history of Sultan, the kingdom and the legends. There's not much to read.

It is a sad thing this highly historical building is not properly preserve as their government has no interest with the sultanate era. No funding what so ever form them. As if, they try to hide the fact that Sumatera once upon a time was under this great era of sultanate.. Oh well, it ok if we choose to be independent and democratic but at at the very least the pyhsical artifact and story need to be preserve and properly documented.
When u enter the main lobby (there was rupiah 5k fee), you will see a grand chandelier that reminiscent of Napolean Bonarte palace in Louvre Paris. I was informed, it was from Paris. The intricate arkwork at the ceiling too remind me of Louvre Palace as as the flooring.. It also reflected the grandness of the palace not so long ago.
I wish the display of memoribilia and history of the royalty is presented in a more clear way as many people who came were more interested to dress up in the royal costume and take photo. Thus the real value of the history was some how misrepresented. In one of the 'hiden' display board, there were pictures of one of the Deli sultan with Dutch businessmen doing some transaction of tobacco plantation. It was however, not enough details were presented.
Overall, this is a must visit place if you are a history buff like me to understand and also witness first hand the forgotten era of sultanate of Deli.

A lot of historical information about the rulers of Medan including their contribution towards the development of Medan. The palace is well maintained. The Meriam Puntung is also inside the same compound. The Maimun Palace provides internal guide who will explain the various artifacts and information about the royal family.

On august 17th 2017, i visited Istana Maimun located at Sultan Ma'moen Al-Rasyid no. 66 A U R Medan Maimun, North Sumatera. If anyone wants to take pictures using traditional Malay clothes, maimun palace provides rental clothes with Rp.10000. This place is highly recommended for families or tourists who are on a kemedan holiday because the maimun palace is one of the historic places .

The entrance fee is only 5k IR (about 50 cents US) but the building is in poor condition. And a bit too many souvenir shops right inside the building. I was a bit disappointed that the country does not revere its history by keeping the building in good condition.

Quite disappointed with this Palace. History on display is interesting but artifacts are aged and also damaged. Palace is not that big. You can also dress up as Royalty and have your picture taken for a fee. Overall, quite disappointing.

Nothing much to see. Welcome by traditional music, followed by the Sultan proclamation area and some Sultan Dress Codes and furnitures and chandelier. 2 floors building but only 1st floor is for visitor and entrance fees is IDR5K. There is souvenir shop inside the palace.
Need to give a facelift to the building and utilize the furnitures and stuffs that left unattended at a corner.

For IDR10k as the entrance fee, there's nothing much to see inside except for the sales girl who will approach to you try the traditional costume (chargeable).

As the Royal palace of Sultanate of Deli, Maimun Palace stood slightly dim right infront the Great Mosque in Medan.
The decor are heavy with Malay style- the use of yellow as the main colour. Still has the original furniture and throne display at the palace, unfortunately the condition are not very good, some preservation definitely needed to maintain its glamour. The painting of the Sultans are not preserve properly so is some of the Chinas and silverware. My tour guide from the Palace was knowledgable, I enjoyed the history lesson. Thank you!

Why do people come here?
Written June 12, 2017
It's a nice palace of Deli Sultan Kingdom where people can see the Throne, colourful interior and decor, culture, and learn about its history of their Kings and hierarchy. Some people will rent traditional costumes and make nice pictures. The rest of this Building is only for King's family and relatives to visit.
